FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST FRIDAY
Dear Families,
Another week started and another week closer to the end of the term and the much anticipated Art Show. Please don’t forget to purchase your tickets online in the coming days as this will be a night to remember and a fitting closure to our most creative and artistic term. Mrs Chris and the students revealed some stunning canvasses earlier in the week, and on Thursday we can look forward to the Bush Dance incursion and watching the rehearsals for the singing items prepared by Mrs Quinn and Miss Angie during their music lessons. This is a real celebration of the Arts program at St. Joseph’s. Well done students and staff!
CONFIRMATION
This Friday, our most senior students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, officiated by Archbishop Hart. Late last week, the Archbishop visited the school and spoke with the children. The student’s manners were impeccable, only to be matched by their responses. Well done Year 6! A very special thank you to Miss O & Mrs Quitt for following up with the special retreat day on the Friday in preparation for the sacrament. We look forward to celebrating with the students and families on Friday evening as they enter this important adult phase of their faith journey.
BOOK WEEK ACTIVITIES
Well done and thanks Mrs Pepper for organising the many Book Week activities for the children over the past few weeks. From author visits, to a special book week production with and an Australian theme, ‘Fair Dinkum.’ The children are most fortunate to have so many wonderfully rich learning experiences.
WORKING BEE
I continue to be overwhelmed by the level of support from our many families in relation to the working bees and community building activities scheduled throughout the year. The turn out again on Saturday was fabulous and all jobs were completed in record time due to the healthy numbers. Thank you Year 3s for actively promoting this working bee and further reducing our maintenance costs. It was wonderful to see new families present, whilst noting a number who have now attended all 3 to date. Rohan Saunders and his trusty team did a great job with the sandpit boundaries, as a number of parents scrubbed all the interior walls throughout the building, weeded gardens, cooked sausages, cleaned the storeroom and painted handrails. It looks fantastic and speaks volumes on how much you value your school community and the children’s learning environment.
YEAR 5 ASSEMBLY – GOLD RUSH
Congratulations to our amazing Year 5G students for the delightful history lesson on Friday at assembly. This gold rush snapshot provided a fitting insight into the wonderful learning undertaken with their impressive teacher, Miss Guy. This all came together after rehearsals on the basketball court because of limited access to the atrium – great job 5G!
CODING AND ROAMING IT LESSONS
So much wonderful feedback has also been received from the teachers and students as Miss Guy schedules weekly visits to the classes to deliver IT lessons. The newly purchased OSMO kits have also been so well sought after and these were in great use in Year 2 on Friday. Win win!
“Coding in Grade 3 is going to be a hit! Miss Guy was amazing!” Anonymous Teacher
SCHOOL BOARD NEWS
This evening Miss Guy will present a proposal to the School Board for 1:1 BYOD (Bring Your Our Devices) to be introduced at Year 4 level. The feedback sought from the parent community has been overwhelmingly positive and in support of this plan, however, some parents have sought clarification on what this program would entail and any likely impact this might have on some ‘traditional’ approaches to teaching and learning e.g. book work etc… An information evening will likely be scheduled early in Term 4 to address these questions and convey the overwhelming benefits of such a program. Rest assured, the introduction of any device into our educational setting must always have a ‘clear purpose’, ‘clear strategy’ and importantly ‘enhance’ the learning experience.
Why are we heading in this direction?
We are preparing students for a future where many areas of employment will involve technology
To develop cyber safety and personal protection competency in an authentic context
Using ICT engages, motivates and inspires students
It enables us to provide personalised learning in a manageable way
It enables collaboration in many ways such as student to teacher or student to student
Allows anywhere/anytime access to learning
Enables us to create more learning time by making the most of every learning minute, having planned group work ready and available immediately, reducing time waiting for instructions and time needed for handing out sheets etc.
With the introduction of the digital technologies curriculum, access to more devices will ease the pressure on teachers who are trying to implement an effective program.
Also at the Board Meeting this evening, Miss Ryle will present a comprehensive report on the exceptional sustainability program that has and continues to be implemented and embedded within our community with great success.
ARMS AND STAFFING 2017
This week, I have commenced ARMs (Annual Review Meetings) with all staff. This is an invaluable opportunity to provide feedback and celebrate the year to date. We discuss student progress, highlights, professional goals and the most likely structures for 2017. I ask all families to please be patient and respectful with these plans for next year. We will likely have a number changes across all grade levels as some staff have had a number of years in the same level. Whilst we value your thoughts and opinions, in this instance, it is best not to speculate or advise, but rather trust that these well-considered decisions are made by the school leadership and in the best interest of the school and children.
Good luck and congratulations to those students representing the school at the Regional Athletics Carnival, after progressing from the Zone carnival. We thank Mrs Howell for her hard work in preparing the students for these days.
Look forward to seeing our dads or special friends at the breakfast, Simon Collis Principal Important afterthoughts…
Thank goodness football season is over for this wounded Blues supporter. I held on to a glimmer of hope for 2017 after rolling Melbourne the week prior, only to come back to reality with a thud after being beaten by an undermanned Bombers outfit on Saturday.
CONGRATULATIONS
To St Joseph’s school community as our water module has been officially certified.
Dear Parents, Excitement is building as the Bush Dance/Art Show is less than 2 weeks away! Mrs Chris and the classroom teachers have worked with the children to produce some stunning art pieces for display on the night. Miss Angie and Mrs Quinn have worked with each year level on an Australiana themed song to perform during the evening, so you can certainly look forward to a fun-packed evening of entertainment.
Please follow this link to purchase your $20 family ticket: https://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=217779
We would love for all participants (mums and dads included) to get into the swing of things and join the children in 'dress-up' for the occasion – think jeans and check shirt – or you can let your imagination run wild!
Here is a run-down of the events for the evening and please take note of when your child's year level will be performing:
5pm-5.50pm Opportunity for a 'Gallery Walk' to enjoy the student art work 5.50pm Mr Collis welcome and opening of the Bush Dance 6pm Year 6 performance in the atrium, followed by the first session with 'Blackberry Jam' 6.30pm-7pm Prep to Year 2 performances in the multi-purpose room 7pm-8pm Blackberry Jam main set 8pm-8.30pm Year 3 to Year 5 performances in the multi-purpose room 8.30-9pm Final set of Blackberry Jam

You will have the opportunity to purchase food and browse the art work at your leisure throughout the evening, although we would love to have as many parents and students as possible join in with the dancing.

MUSIC UPDATE FOR THE ARTS FESTIVAL…
The children have worked very hard this term to prepare an item for the Arts Festival, which will be performed at the Bush Dance.
Whilst we understand that there can be reasons for not attending the night, we have allocated all children with a part to play.
If you are aware that your family will not be attending, could you please let your child’s class teacher know this week. This will enable us to make minor changes if required. Looking forward to a fun night,
Miss Angie and Mrs Quinn

Celebrating the Children’s Book Council’s 2016 theme ‘Australia: Story Country’ “Fair Dinkum”
On Monday 29th of August, our students were entertained by the team at ‘Perform’ with their book week musical called “Fair Dinkum”. The play was a modern day fable that referenced classic Australian storytelling to create a musical filled with adventure, audience participation and of course the best in contemporary Australian children’s books. The show was action packed, fun filled and encouraged our children to consider how significant books can be, not only as a means of entertainment and escape, but as a way of informing their understanding of the world around us.
So what did our students think about the performance?
**Just a reminder that our Year 5 students are going to see Morris Gleitzman on Thursday 1st September. Early start at 8.25am.
