HEADLINE NEWSLongtime Collaboration with PGMS Garners Gold Award forAPPAAPPA has received the 2015 Gold Award from the Professional GroundsManagement Society (PGMS). The award was presented at the PGMSannual awards dinner on October 23, 2015, and received by APPA Directorof Knowledge Management Steve Glazner. APPA was selected “inrecognition of outstanding and longterm achievements and contributions tothe green industry.” But that barely tells the storyof APPA’s 20year collaboration with PGMS. Inthe mid1990s APPA and PGMS entered into astrategic partnership agreement, wherein theyshared memberships with each other’sassociation offices, attended each other’sconferences, and explored ways to shareresources and assistance on publications, conferences, and workshops. When APPA decided to follow up its success of the original CustodialStaffing Guidelines publication with similar books focusing on grounds andmaintenance, PGMS became a natural partner in the development and coauthorship of the grounds edition, published in 2001. No one person, or oneorganization, can do it all by themselves. Ittakes continued and nurtured collaborationthat benefits all parties to achieve theirgoals for their respective members andconstituents. APPA looks forward to ourcontinued collaborations with other greatassociations like PGMS. More on this award forthcoming in the upcomingNovember/December issue of Facilities Manager magazine.

The magazine notes that the main goals of a college ranking are "to attractattention, reflect the values of the publication, and provoke readers justenough." In The Economist's case, this means focusing on money—specifically in the form of alumni salaries. The Economist calculated howmuch graduates of colleges could be predicted to earn based on a range offactors, including the institutions’ religious affiliation, average wages in thearea, and percentage of students receiving Pell grants. Then, it comparedthose predicted outcomes to "actual" earnings data listed in the CollegeScorecard. Schools where the Scorecard earnings were much higher thanthe predicted earnings were ranked higher. Like many rankings, thismethodology requires some complex statistics. Learn more.
