Dairy Goat Judging & Skills Event

Programs supported by the 4-H Program are available to all persons regardless of race, age, sex, color,

sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, ancestry, or national origin, marital status,

genetic information, political affiliation, or gender identity and expression.

Whether you carry a goat project or not, the Maryland 4-H Dairy Goat Judging & Skills Event is a great way to work with other 4-H’ers to learn information about goats while having fun.

The State Dairy Goat Judging Contest will be held during the Maryland State Fair on Thursday, August 25th at 6pm. The event consist of a 40 question written exam (all multi-ple choice for juniors & part multiple choice/short answer for intermediates & seniors). Participants also have the opportunity to complete a 40-50 question skills event on the following topics: Feedstuff Identification, Equipment Identification, Quality Assurance, Breed Identification, Wholesale Meat Cuts, Parts Identification and Disease Identifica-tion. (juniors are given an answer key to use for answers) Furthermore, 4-H participants judge 3-4 classes of dairy goats (at least 1 class of kids/yearlings and 1 class of milkers) and give 1-2 sets of reasons (Juniors-1 set and Intermediates & Seniors 1-2 sets depending on the classes).

How should I prepare for the event?

Judging components: use the Holstein Foundation’s Dairy Judging Workbook which con-tains a Dairy Goat Judging Supplement: http://www.holsteinfoundation.org/pdf_doc/workbooks/Dairy_Goat_Judging_Supplement.pdf

and the American Dairy Goat Association website: http://adga.org/
