A Message from the Board President William “Chuck” Credo, III

As we enter the fall season, our thoughts turn to changing temperatures and cheering for our favorite football teams. At NAMI New Orleans, we also think of changing lives and cheering for our team members who give so much to the community we serve.

Join me for the 9th annual NAMIWalks New Orleans as we second line through Audubon Park on Saturday, October 6th, in honor of all those affected by mental illness. NAMIWalks is an opportunity to take a stand against stigma—and have a lot of fun doing so!

Your support is needed more than ever as we experience a significant decrease in state-wide funding for mental healthcare services. If you cannot make it out to the walk, please make a donation to NAMIWalks New Orleans. NAMIWalks funds the critical education and support services needed in our community.

Help change minds with a second line at NAMIWalk on Saturday, October 6th!

I hereby waive all claims against NAMI New Orleans, sponsors, or any personnel for any injury that I might suffer in this event. I attest that I am physically fit and prepared for this event. I grant full permission for organizers to use photographs of me and quotations from me in legitimate accounts and promotions of this event.

NAMI Connection Spotlight Continued: …mental illness to come together and discuss their experiences. These

groups, held weekly at both our Uptown and Westbank facilities, ensure

confidentiality so that people who attend the groups can speak openly with

each other. NAMI Connection places an emphasis on developing healthy

coping mechanisms, recognizing social and environmental triggers, and

working towards a better future for each individual who attends. Each group

session is led by trained facilitators living in recovery. Jessie and Fran

(pictured below) have served as peer leaders for the Uptown NAMI

Connection Support Group for over five years. Each Thursday, Jessie and

Fran lead discussions on mental illness. “One of the main goals of NAMI

Connection is to make sure that members of the group are seen as

individuals rather than as their illnesses” says Fran. “We really try to

fight stigma and judgement and

replace it with hope and acceptance.”

NAMI Connection is offered at no cost to

adults living with mental illness thanks to

the funds raised through our annual

NAMIWalks. Learn more about our free

Sometimes first aid isn’t a bandage, or CPR, or calling

911. Sometimes, first aid is YOU. Mental Health First Aid

helps you assist someone developing a problem or crisis

related to mental illness or substance use disorders. Course

participants learn risk factors, warning signs, and strategies

on how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis

situations. For a nominal fee, NAMI New Orleans’ trained

facilitators conduct an 8-hour course. Participants will be

certified in Mental Health First Aid for three years. Take a

course, save a life, and strengthen your community.
