LAST THREE GAMES:

Page 3: NEW ORLEANS/OKLAHOMA CITY HORNETS … · New Orleans Arena – New Orleans, LA ... New Orleans/Oklahoma City: 84 Sacramento: 81 ... THIRD QUARTER BLUES:

SEASON NOTES: • With the 91-87 win at BOS, the Hornets have now won seven of their last eight season openers. • The Hornets are shooting 16 percent (4-25) from the three-point line. • The Hornets first two wins (11/1 at BOS, 11/3 at IND) both came against that had swept them (2-0) during the 2005-06

season. • Chris Paul had 20 points and 10 assists in the opening night win, recording his first double-double of the season…his first

double-double last year occurred in the sixth game of the season (11/15 at MIA)…he had 23 double-doubles last season. • David West has led the Hornets in scoring the first two games (18 pts, 11/1 at BOS and 20 pts, 11/3 at IND). • The Hornets bench outscored the Pacers’ bench 39-26 in the 11/3 win at IND…Rasual Butler led the bench with 11 points. • The Hornets have outscored their opponents 92-66 in the paint. • The Hornets outrebounded the Pacers by 19 (53-34) in the 11/3 win…Tyson Chandler had 15 total rebounds, including

eight offensive which was one more than Indiana’s starting five combined total. • Celtics’ All-Star Paul Pierce recorded a career-high 19 rebounds in the loss, it also marked an opponent-high for total

rebounds in an opening night game for the Hornets. • The Hornets are 2-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season…it also marks the first time the Hornets have won their first

two road games since the 2000-01 season. • Only five players from the current roster (David West, Chris Paul, Brandon Bass, Rasual Butler and Desmond Mason) were

on the opening night roster for the Hornets last season. THIRD QUARTER BLUES: The third quarter has continued to be a problem thus far in the 2006-07 season just as it was last season…over the final 21 games of the 2005-06 season, the Hornets were outscored 18-of-21 times in the third quarter…this season, the Hornets have been outscored in each of the first two games (24-21 by Boston and 32-21 by Indiana)…they have also surrendered an 8-1 run to start the half against the Celtics and an 8-0 run to start the half against the Pacers. #3 IN THE 3RD: #3 is not only Chris Paul’s number, but it seems to be his favorite quarter so far in the young season…CP3 has stepped up his scoring game in each of the first two third-quarter’s accounting for 16 total points in the two games…he has also delivered 14 of those 16 points in the last three minutes of the third where in each game the score has been close. THE FREE THROW SHOOTER FORMERLY KNOWN AS PEJA: If anyone would have told you that after two games, Peja Stojakovic would be the seventh best free-throw shooter on the Hornets, people would have thought you meant in the NBA and not the Hornets…a career .892 percent free-throw shooter, Peja is the second most accurate charity stripe shooter in the game today (behind Steve Nash), however, he has started out the 2006-07 season by missing three of his first six. THE OFF-SEASON’S BIG THREE: The Hornets acquired, signed or drafted seven new players to this year’s roster over the summer…three of the biggest were Tyson Chandler, Bobby Jackson and Peja Stojakovic…those three combined for 31 points, 14 rebounds and three assists in the 91-87 win over Boston on 11/1 and 23 points, 24 rebounds and two assists in the 100-91 win over Indiana on 11/3. PRESEASON RESULTS: The Hornets finished the preseason with a 2-5 record…the Hornets have an all-time preseason record of 63-80 (.441)--that includes a home record of 25-11 (.694), a road record of 9-31 (.225) and a record of 28-38 (.418) at neutral sites. DEFENSE KEY TO WINS IN PRESEASON: The Hornets are expected to be an up-tempo, fast-breaking team this season…however, during the preseason, their defense was the key to a win or a loss…in the two wins, the Hornets gave up just 81 points compared to 110.2 points in the five losses…the below chart further illustrates the note. OPPONENTS PTS FG’s TWO WINS 81 58-142 (.408) FIVE LOSSES 110.2 194-369 (.526) THREE-POINT SPECIALIST: One of the Hornets’ main needs last season was a player who could consistently knock down an outside shot…with the trade to get Peja Stojakovic, the Hornets got one of the best in NBA history in that category…over the last seven seasons, Stojakovic and Seattle’s Ray Allen are the only two NBA players to make at least 100 three-pointers in each season.

RECORD SETTING YEAR FOR CP3: 2005-06 rookie of the year Chris Paul blazed onto the NBA scene last season…Paul set his share of records along the way during the 2005-06 season…below are a few of the records and marks he set.

• CP3 led the NBA in total steals, making him the second rookie in NBA history to lead the NBA in total steals…Brevin Knight accomplished the feat in 1997-98.

• Chris Paul has captured the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award each month this season…if he is named the April award winner, it will mark the fifth time in NBA history a player has captured the award in every month of his rookie season…Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James (2002-03), Tim Duncan (1997-98) and David Robinson (1989-90) won the award every month.

• Chris Paul set Hornets rookie records for: -Most Assists in a season and game. -Highest Free Throw Percentage for a season. -Most Free Throws made and attempted in a game. -Most Steals in a season and game.

• Paul scored 24 points with 12 rebounds and 12 assists 4/2 at TOR, to become the first rookie with triple-12s since Jay Williams did it for the Bulls in 2002…the only other active players to have done so as rookies were Steve Francis, Antoine Walker, and Chris Webber…also became the first Hornet rookie to record a triple-double.

• First rookie to record at least 13 assists in three straight games (2/1 vs. CHI, 2/4 vs. LAL, 2/6 at NJN) since Jason Kidd (1994).

• Chris Paul recorded 21 games of 10+ assists this season…over the last 10 years, the only other rookies with at least 20 games of 10 or more assists were Brevin Knight (26 in 1997-1998) and Jamaal Tinsley (21 in 2001-2002).

• Chris Paul had 17 points, 11 rebounds, 16 assists and six steals in the Hornets' overtime victory 4/5 vs. GSW…since 1973-74, when the NBA began keeping track of steals, only one other player reached those levels in each of those four categories in the same game, that was Magic Johnson…he also needed overtime to do it (33 points, 15 rebounds, 17 assists and six steals vs. Denver on March 29, 1981).

CP3 HAD ONE OF THE BEST ROOKIE SEASONS IN HISTORY: Most NBA fans and insiders knew that Chris Paul was a lock for rookie of the year and that he had a great rookie season…but most don’t know just how remarkable it was…Paul’s Player Efficiency Rating (PER) was an astonishing 22.14…the PER is a rating that assigns various values to different statistics accumulated by players on a per-minute basis, and is regarded by most experts as the most accurate statistical estimate of a player’s performance…PER was tracked starting in the 1977-78 season, when the NBA first kept track of turnovers…below is a chart that shows you how remarkable of a first NBA season CP is having…since the start of the decade, only three players—Elton Brand (20.63), Yao Ming (20.59) and Marquis Daniels (20.10)—have posted PER’s north of 20.0…only one 20-year old in NBA history has a better PER than CP, his name is LeBron James, who had a 25.67 PER last season…another startling number is how many rookie point guards dating back to 1977-78 have had a PER better than CP3: none…Magic Johnson is the only PG to have a PER better than 20.0 (20.63).

Paul's rookie season stacks up well when compared with those of other rookie guards in NBA history…very well…shockingly well…let's cut right to the chase…here's a complete list of every guard in NBA history to post a better rookie PER than Paul's:

1. Oscar Robertson 2. Michael Jordan

Yes, that is the whole list. MJ and the Big O. In terms of PER, Paul is the best rookie guard in two decades and the best rookie point guard in 45 years.

BEST ROOKIE SEASONS SINCE 1977-78 PLAYER YEAR PER AGE David Robinson 1990 26.35 25 Michael Jordan 1985 25.85 22 Arvydas Sabonis 1996 24.74 31 Shaquille O’Neal 1993 22.91 21 Terry Cummings 1983 22.83 22 Tim Duncan 1998 22.63 21 Chris Paul 2006 22.14 20 Walter Davis 1978 22.14 23 Chris Webber 1994 21.67 21 Marques Johnson 1978 21.33 22
