Audience
• This lesson is created for Middle School English/Language Arts class, grades 6-8.
• Are you a Poet or a Rapper?
Overview
• In this lesson, intended for middle schoolers who have been studying poetry. During the unit in this lesson, students use multiple online sources to search for poetry and songs, that communicate poetry elements, practice working with podcasting tools; and create and share a three-minute podcast in class.
Standards
• Students will access prior knowledge by discussing the elements of poetry.
• Improve comprehension by researching the web for poetry and songs.
• Demonstrate the ability to effectively organize and synthesize information to create content for a podcast.
• Develop oral presentation skills by creating short poetry podcasts.
Essential Questions
What is Poetry?How can you distinguish a rapper from a poet?
Introduction• You are in for a unique lesson this week. We will
study poetry and the elements of poetry.
• We will listen to various poems and favorite rap songs on podcasts that are appropriate for our setting to find out if you are a poet or a rapper.
• In this lesson you will create a podcast of an original poem written by you and share with the class.
• You will use a handout to refer to as you create your podcasts content.
• As a class we will listen to the Podcasting in Plain English video on the following website:
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-MSL42NV3c
• before creating your podcasting. We will discuss in class.
• Once the class is ready, we will begin to take turns recording and publishing your podcasts.
TASK 1 Locate the lyrics to a song of your choice. Copy the lyrics
on to a sheet of paper or print them off the Internet. Be sure to write your name on the top of the copy of the lyrics. You are to analyze the song looking for the following characteristics. (30 points) (analysis)
• 1. Write at least two examples of rhyme in the song
• 2. Write at least one example of metaphor or simile
• 3. Write at least one example of how the song writer uses words to build sensory impressions and/or create images
• 4. Write a brief summary (paragraph or so) explaining what the song is about.
