1 M: Do you often go online, Mary?

W: I wish I did, John. You know I'm so preoccupied with

the housework every day.

Q: What does the woman mean?

2 M: Hi, Tracy, you know what I want to say? I do wish my

wife didn't spend so many hours chatting online.

W: That's exactly what I wanted to say about my

husband.

Q: What can we learn from the conversation?

3 M: Does your son enjoy playing games online?

W: I guess he's got playmates all over the world.

Q: What does the woman say about her son?

4 M: Would you mind telling me your email address, Prof. Brown?

W: It's [email protected].

Q: What's the professor's email address?

5 M: My son once played computer games for three days without stopping.

W: Oh, my God! Are you kidding, man? I just can't imagine.

Q: What's the woman's reaction to what the man says?

6 W: Will you tell me what a QQ number is used for?

M: It's something like a phone number. People use it to seek their chat mates online.

Q: What do we know from the conversation?

7 W: What's your opinion of chatting with strangers onli

ne?

M: Me? I've never tried it myself. But if people like it,

they may have their reasons.

Q: What's the man's attitude towards chatting with

strangers online?

8 W: I'm really concerned that there is so much harmful

material online that may be harmful to my ki

ds.

M: I know of some software that functions as a firewall.

Why not have a try?

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

M: What for? To let people know what you are cooking

in the microwave and what you've got in the

fridge?

Q: What does the man mean?

10 W: I find it a lot more fun shopping at home, dear; I

mean shopping online.

M: No wonder my credit card is overdrawn.

Q: What can we conclude from the conversation?

Dialogue 1

W: Hi, Dick, do you have an email account?

M: What a question, Jiang! Do you think I am living in the past?

Don't tell me you haven't got one.

W: Well, though I write a lot of emails, I still miss the days when

I had so many pen friends. We used to write to each other

very often.

M: But you can do the same with emails. And it's much easier.

W: We did and are still doing so sometimes. Only the email

letters are becoming shorter and duller.

M: That's what emails are usually like, something like mobile

phone messages.

W: That's exactly why I missed the good old days when I could

receive full-length letters.

M: I know what you mean. But now not many people would

spend hours writing those long letters.

W: Sometimes I wonder whether the new technology has

brought people closer together or made us drift away from each ot

her.

M: Perhaps you've made a point there.

Dialogue 2

M: Our company contracted a new project today and the

manager wanted me to join the design team.

W: That's wonderful. What kind of project?

M: It's a web store of a large supermarket. They want to expand

their business online.

W: Are you sure you can do it well?

M: That's why I'm planning to enroll in a crash course in

computer-aided graphic design.

W: But you are so busy all day long; I think it's almost

impossible.

M: Perhaps I should consider going to a virtual university, as

you do.

W: That's a very good idea. You can study any time you like in

such a university.

M: How's the one you’re with? Are the courses well-designed?

W: Very well-designed, I'd say. In addition, they provide online

discussions and offer immediate answers to any questions

students ask.

M: That's terrific! How are the fees, expensive?

W: Not much difference from the real university.
