This will not be a quick fix; but changes that when adapted step by step as Lions partner with existing community organizations and health care systems, we can make a great impact toward eliminating the disease and the consequences of having diabetes poorly controlled. in service. This seems appropriate since one of our new global service areas is diabetes.

Diabetes is an area of concern both locally and internationally as over 450 million people are affected by it. Many of these are what is known as Diabetes Type 2, meaning that it is developed over time rather than present at birth. The Lions are up to this task. Just like river blindness which has been eliminated in many parts of the world due to the diligent efforts to identify the cause and take specific steps to eliminate the sources that caused it.

It is now time to bring that spirit of “can do” home to our community. The old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is what we are aiming for. Our diabetes goal is to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms and encourage follow up visits with healthcare providers. A healthy lifestyle including diet, exercise, and weight management will be important components of the plan. As will awareness education.

This will not be a quick fix; but changes that when adapted step by step as Lions partner with existing community organizations and health care systems, we can make a great impact toward eliminating the disease and the consequences of having diabetes poorly controlled.

I wish each club a great and productive Lions year as we visibly serve our communities in the best way possible. I encourage you to reach out to the Lions leadership team to assist you and your club in any way possible.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship Program is a generous way to show commitment to the humanitarian work of LCIF

Areas of Giving Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) will now be able to help more people than ever before. Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) eligibility now includes donations to five special program areas. Donors will now be able to receive MJF and PMJF credit when directing their support to:

• Area of Greatest Need: Supports all program areas and allows LCIF the flexibility to supplement initiatives where additional funding is necessary or where the need is most urgent. • Disaster: Enables LCIF to direct the funds to the areas most in need following disasters to provide for immediate, mid and long-term relief. The Foundation will be able to immediately provide funds for large-scale disaster relief, rather than collecting and distributing funds over a period of weeks or months. • Sight: Funds seek to support hundreds of sight-related activities ranging from equipping eye clinics to providing Braille computers for the visually impaired. • Youth: Supports the Lions Quest program and other initiatives such as educational infrastructure improvements and programs to assist at-risk youth. • Measles: Funds support the purchase and distribution of the measles and rubella vaccination in select developing countries.

New Opportunities to Serve

Dear Lions,

As many of you know, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is turning 50 years old this year. We are celebrating in many exciting ways, including birthday parties all over the world, and a series of fun and educational contests that you can enter at LCIF50.org. We hope you’ll take part in the celebration.

Growth allows LCIF to make exciting changes, another thing to celebrate. LCIF continually moves forward to assist Lions in making a bigger impact on the world.

With that said, there are some new grant opportunities I hope you will be excited about. These new additions will allow Lions and Leos to expand their service work. Keep reading for details on the new grants, and visit LCIF.org for more information.

As you hear more about LCIF’s 50th anniversary, let’s reflect upon LCIF’s mission: “To support the efforts of Lions clubs and partners in serving communities locally and globally, giving hope and impacting lives through humanitarian service projects and grants.”

LCIF depends on the hearts of Lions. Keep up the great work! Let’s show the world what Lions and LCIF can do together.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Bob Corlew Chairman, Lions Clubs International Foundation

CLUB CALENDAR

Muskegon Host Lions Summer Camp is upcoming! August 17, 18 and 19 2018

Fellow Lions, the Muskegon Host Lions Club is sponsoring our Annual Summer Weekend Camp for the blind and visually impaired throughout the state of Michigan. Adult blind and visually impaired campers look forward to this event each year. The camp was inspired by the Winter Weekend Camp for the blind and visually impaired which the Cereal City Battle Creek Lions sponsor. Campers expressed a desire for a summer camp and so a former Lion, Donald Madden who volunteered at the Winter Camp when bringing campers from the Muskegon area to the camp located at the Kellogg Education Center on Clear Lake, outside of Dowling Michigan brought the idea to the Muskegon Host Lions Club and in partnership with Pioneer Resources began to hold this annual weekend camping experience at Pioneer Trails Camp on Big Blue Lake in Holton Michigan. Campers swim, fish, go on pontoon boat rides and any other water sports as long as there is a sighted volunteer to go along. They experience crafts at the lodge, Bingo in the dining hall, hikes on the trails at Camp Pendalouan which is next to the Pioneer Trails Camp and run by the YMCA and which Lions also have a long-time relationship, having sponsored a cabin on the grounds as early as the 1930’s. Campers also have an opportunity to experience Archery and Karl DeWitt our camp director assists in this as well as the hiking experience. Campers have a lot of fun with camp fires on Friday and Saturday nights and the freedom to experience the outdoors, meet old and make new friends and overall have a wonderful time. The Muskegon Host Lions Club welcomes both volunteer and financial assistance from other Lions Clubs and other community organizations. We truly need many volunteers to make this a great experience for our campers; so please if there is interest in volunteering any amount of time during the weekend contact us. The camp is paved so the trails are easy to negotiate for those who use canes as well as if there is a need for a walker as the camp is designed for those with physical disabilities. Come and join us and have fun interacting with the blind and visually impaired campers who attend. Assisting with serving food at the dining hall is needed as well as escorting those who are not familiar with negotiating the camp grounds yet. Sighted assistance is needed to help with all activities and the more we have the better the experience for everyone. Thank you to those Lions Clubs who already support our efforts and we’d love to have more clubs help out.
