Fish is by far the best protein source to produce

• 1 kg beef ~ 18 kg feed needed (~ 15,5m3 freshwater)

• 1 kg pork ~ 4 kg feed needed (~ 4,8m3 freshwater)

• 1 kg chicken ~ 3,2 kg feed needed (~3,9 m3 freshwater)

• 1 kg trout ~ 0,8 kg feed needed (~0,3-3 m3 freshwater RAS)

• Long term • Fish has the lowest CO2 production compared to other animal protein• Lowest environmental footprint• A very important selling point in the developed world for the future

• Fresh water: carp, trout

• Species for restocking/enhancing in lakes and rivers

• Saltwater: salmon

Pond farming

• Total fish pond area in the EU is about 350000 ha

• A production that preserves tradition and nature

• Pond fish farms are integrated into the environment and the landscape and contribute to preserve biodiversity

Traditional species

• Traditional species are efficient to grow

• Most traditional species are fast growing species• The fish are adapted to farm conditions – domesticated• The best specimens have been selected for years (behavior – growth)• Ponds in Lithuania since year 1500…

• In agriculture business: A few very effective species today optimised over thousands of years (cattle, pig, chicken)

• Salmon max. 40 generations in Norway • Now: special salmon breed for steaks or for smoking

Traditional species

• Downside:• Hard competition on the market - increasing all the time

• Import from aquaculture and captured fisheries

• Environmental restrictions (RAS)

• Access to land. Competition with other users (sports fishing, nature groups, military, etc.)

• Upside: • Easier to estimate output

• Less risks/uncertainties

• Known investments

• Optimisation on mass production at large scale (1000ton trout RAS farms and more…)

• Fresh water: sturgeon, African catfish, pike-perch

• Salt water: yellow-tailed amberjack (Kingfish), white leg shrimp (Vannemei), tiger shrimp (monodon)

• Aquapri has worked for years to close the reproduction circle

• RAS, Temp 20-23°C, currently 800.000 fish.

• 500tonnes in 2016; 700tonnes in 2017

• Size grading is needed - VERY often

Pike-perch

• The capture of wild pike-perch is stable 7-9000ton and is not expected to rise (captured fish are mostly consumed locally)

• Investment 9 million EUR

• Market price 8-11 EUR/kg for gourmet restaurants, fresh (unfrozen) to the sushi market (main markets Germany, Austria and Switzerland)

• Green listed by WWF (wild version red listed)
