Thang Long’s four guardian god temples have vital locations in Hanoi – the 1,000 years old capital. The four temples were built as soon as King Ly Thai To established the country’s capital in Thang Long (now Hanoi). Archeological and historical documents prove that four temples which worshiped four guardian gods including Bach Ma Temple (in the East), Quan Thanh Temple (in the North), Voi Phuc Temple (in the West) and Kim Lien Temple (in the South). They are called Thang Long’s four guardian god temples.

Quan Thanh temple: Temples are places for worshipping saints while pagodas are dedicated to Buddha and faithful disciplines. Saint Tran Vu was a legendary figure which was the combination between a legendary character in Vietnam's legend. He was a saint who had earned the merits of assisting Thuc Phan (future King An Duong Vuong) in getting rid of ghost spirit during the construction of Co Loa Citadel.

Quan Thanh Temple worships Huyen Thien Tran Vu-a god holds the north of capital. The Le dynasty, It is in Thuy Chuong ward, Vinh Thuan district, south of West Lake. Now it is at the crossroad Thanh Nien street and Thuy Khe street, Ha Noi.

According to the legend, Huyen Thien Tran Vu god helps the people to govern the northern, exorcise ghosts, demons destroying the peaceful life around the Thang Long city. Temple lies in the center of city, has the beautiful and cool campus.

History

Quan Thanh Temple was established during the reign of King Lý Thái Tổ (1010-1028) The temple worships Huyen Thien Tran Vu who helped Hung King to defeat invaders and helped people to prevent ghosts and natural disasters.

Tran Vu Quan is the first name and oldest of the monuments In 1823, Quan Thanh Temple was renamed Tran Vu Quan. Then it was called Quan Chan Vu in 1840.In 1842, during the reign of King Minh Mang II the temple was renamed Quan Thanh.

Architecture

The architecture of the Quan Thanh Temple is a mixture of the imperial era. It is the same architecture to China one. The main features of the Quan Thanh Temple consist of Tam Quan gate, large courtyard shaded by a giant banyan tree and three house layers ( Tien Te, Trung Te, Hau Cung).

If everyone goes through Quan Thanh Temple and stops in front of Tam Quan gate, people will see the image of the Bell. Deep down, we can’t forget the Bell associated with these smooth verses : ”The gentle breeze blows over the bamboo leavesAnd the Tran Vu bellringings mix into the cock crowing s to mark the watches at Tho Xuong.”

Architecture

The statue of Huyen Thien Tran Vu is one of two biggest black bronze statues in Viet Nam. It was placed in harem. According to the legend, Tran Vu chased away demon during the construction of Co Loa Citadel. In memory of his great merit, artisans of Ngu Xa village cast it in 1677. It is 3.96 meters in height and 4 tons in weight.

Tran Vu appears as a genie with hanging down hair, the left hand passes magic and the right hand holds a sword covered by a snack propping against the back of a turtle. This special artwork expresses a refined casting technique of Vietnamese people in 17th century.

Inside the temple, there is another smaller bronze statue of Mr.Trum Trong who designed the statue of Tran Vu. His students cast it to express their gratitude to the teacher. Nowadays, Quan Thanh temple still keeps many vestigates such as stone

steles, more than 180 horizontal panels, parallel sentences. Besides, there arepictures and poems praising charming landscapes or relating to impressions on the situation from that time’s poets in the 18th and 19th century.

Quan Thanh temple is not only famous for the historical and architectural value, but also a cultural beauty in spirituality of Hanoi people.Quan Thanh Festival is held on Lunar March 3rd every year. It is a place where worships Huyen Thien Tran Vu.

People often come here on the first day or the fifteenth day of month. They bring some flowers and offerings. They burn incense and pray for luck in the life . People think that touching the legs of Huyen Thien Tran Vu will give us luck. It is considered as a cultural feature.

The vast West Lake

The West Lake is the most poetic destination in Ha Noi. It is also the most romantic corner in Ha Noi polychrome painting. It is not only an ideal address of tourism but also full of the unique cultural value of a nation.

It is about 17km in length. With an area over 500 hectares, the West Lake is the largest one in Ha Noi. According to the ancient documents, the West Lake was the part of the Red river left after the latter changed its flow.
