INTRODUCING YOU TO
NEW STUDENT INSTITUTE SCHEDULE2019
campus life!
Hiram
WELCOME NEW STUDENTS!
As the President of the College, I have many duties. Some of the best ones are those that connect me to students. It is a great pleasure, therefore, to welcome you to the Hiram community and to your first official experience: New Student Institute.
New Student Institute is purposefully designed to give you a taste of what is to come in what wecall “the New Liberal Arts.” As part of the New Liberal Arts, you will do all of this and more: examine enduring questions and urgent changes through various perspectives, participate in exciting off-campus activities, and develop the skills necessary for 21st century careers. As you go through both Institute and your first year, I hope you will push yourself by getting out of your personal comfort zone. After all, college is not a high school do-over; it is a guided trek full of inquiry, discovery, challenge, and support. So, lace up those hiking boots we just gave you, and get out there!
To make the most of your personal journey of discovery, you must weave together classroom and co-curricular activities in ways that help you lead an integrated life. Perhaps you can pull from a discussion you had last week in the residence halls to shed light on how you are going to organize a group experiment you are setting up in the lab. Maybe an encounter with a fellow athlete will help you better analyze a protagonist you are studying in your literature class. Be creative. Figure out ways to connect the learning that happens in one place to the learning that happens in another. The most meaningful lessons in college are those that are layered upon each other such that one lesson is informed by a previous one and then goes on to shape a future lesson.
As you start to settle in this week, do your best to meet different people – professors, advisors, coaches, staff members, and fellow students. Commit today to making the most of this adventure: be open minded, come prepared, and give yourself and others the benefit of the doubt. Entering Hiram with that type of mindset will help you find and become your best self.
As you make your way throughout the year, balance hard work with fun and laughter. Relish the many good moments you will have. Start to imagine, with great optimism, the well-rounded, well-prepared, and joyful person you will be four years from now.
For now, though, enjoy the weekend and start practicing the “Hiram Hi” that communicates the warmth and friendliness we want all who walk our campus to feel.
Welcome to Hiram,
Dr. Lori E. Varlotta President
REMEMBER:Wear your
lanyard during Institute Week
All activities shown in BLUE are required
