Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last week I mentioned that since mid-May, all the parishes of our diocese have been making in-person Mass available. No case of COVID-19 has been contracted by attending Mass at any parish in the diocese – praise God.

During this time, Mass attendance has been gradually increasing. Since July the Bishop has allowed up to 50% capacity provided that we can maintain social distance. That means that St. Mary’s is able to exceed 200 people. Those living under the same roof do not need to socially distance, so we are able to seat more people. As of yet, we have not had to send anyone to our overflow at 5pm Sat., 11am Sun. or 12:30pm Sun.

A reminder that this Sunday we will begin singing again at Mass. This has not resulted in people contracting the coronavirus from attending Mass at other parishes. Of course, we will keep our masks on and sing at a normal, i.e., not elevated, volume. Recall from last week’s column that most people do not sing hymns like professional singers, so the number of droplets produced by “regular” people like you and me (according to the most recent studies with people singing with masks) are not more dangerous than regular talking. We are pro-life, and would never do something to recklessly endanger human life.

Last weekend, Fr. Francisco and I spoke briefly about the Bicentennial Capital Campaign, celebrating 200 years since the founding of the Diocese of Charleston. Hopefully by now, you have received a mailing with more details about the whole campaign. As a recap: Half of every dollar raised comes back to us for three areas of need, identified as our past, present, and future.

Past – To help with much-needed repairs to our beloved Old St. Mary’s church, particularly replacing the over 100-year old roof as well as restoring (or replacing) the organ.

Present – To pay off remaining debt owed on the new church.

Future – For our children, especially safety and technology improvements at our school.

Some great news – as of Oct. 1, we have already raised over $900,000. That’s over 52% of our goal! I shouldn’t be surprised at this point by the generosity of the people of St. Mary’s… but I’m still blown away.

The other half of the funds raised will be distributed through the Catholic Community Foundation of South Carolina, who will ensure 100% of their funds go where needed, especially to programs helping the poor, the elderly, struggling Catholic schools seminarians, and more great initiatives. No gift is too small.

Finally, prayer is like air for a Christian’s lungs, i.e., we can’t truly live without it. Thanks to all who signed up for Perpetual Adoration. We covered our need, we can always use more Adorers, like you!

Father Wilson

Padre Wilson

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Dear Parents: October challenge: work on getting into the habit of

praying aloud together as a family. Start small if needed. Before praying, ask your children to think about what they would like to thank God for, if there is any situation they need help with, and if there is any request they’d like to include. Make sure you include your own personal prayers. If you children are able, let them verbalize their own prayers; if they aren’t, pray aloud for them. It’s especially important to get into a habit to pray before meals, but find other regular time in your family life to pray.

You should have your books and credentials to get on-line with the app. Please contact Mary Ellen Jackson if you have not gotten your books or onto the app.

For K – 5th grade, the Safe Environment Program will be done by the parents at home. You should already have gotten information about that. If you are not able to do it at home (due to computer or Wi-Fi problems) Mary Ellen Jackson will be happy to meet with you on campus to have you do the program there.

It is important to get your children signed up for classes.

Good and Faithful Servant

Because of the location of our parish, you may find yourself being asked for assistance from those in need in our community as you attend Mass. As Catholics, we have a responsibility to help each other, our families, and our community and we would like to provide you with some suggestions on how to help as you feel appropriate. We’ve previously shared some of this information but we have some additional resources to offer.

We have bags of non-perishable, portable food available for people in need; these are generously donated by St. Vincent de Paul. The bags are maintained in the Church for distribution as needed. Please contact a Mass Coordinator or Usher for assistance.

Free sack lunches are now offered every Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00 at Mother Teresa Hall. This initiative, originally offered once per month by the Aiken County Homeless Coalition, is now able to be offered weekly due to the generous response of Joan LaBone and our Youth Ministry, with support from other groups, such as CWA.

We request that you avoid giving money to people. If you feel that you want to have something to offer people if they ask, other than above, we recommend that you purchase gift cards from places like McDonalds, Burger King, Food Lion. This will ensure that people have access to food at least until the food pantries open on Monday. All of those places are within walking distance from the Parish.

As always, feel free to refer the person to Bette Ross, parish Social Ministry Coordinator, for assistance. Her contact information is on the second page of the bulletin, They can come by the Parish office to meet with her to get connected to existing resources within Aiken.

Please give some prayerful consideration if you feel the calling to give more aid to the most vulnerable in our community — volunteer either within St. Mary’s or the greater Aiken community. There are many opportunities to share your time, talent, and treasure, such as St. Vincent de Paul, Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Center, Aiken County Homeless Coalition, Salvation Army, Nurture Home, Crossroads Aiken — just to name a few.

And most important, let us remember to always pray for those in need.

God of Justice, Open our eyes to see you in the face of the poor. Open our ears to hear you in the cries of the exploited. Open our mouths to defend you in the public squares as well as in private deeds. Remind us that what we do to the least ones, we do to you. Amen.

Altar Flower Donations/Done flores

para el altar

Donating altar flowers is a simple, lovely way to honor a loved one, glorify God, and add beauty to the altar. Flowers can be donated in honor of a living person, memory of someone who has died, in celebration of an anniversary or other milestone, or in thanksgiving for friends or family. You can choose any Sunday or have an open Sunday chosen for you. The names of those being honored or remembered will appear in the bulletin on the Sunday you select. If you prefer, you can simply give the flowers to the Glory of God. The suggested donation is $250 for two arrangements. To donate, please call Janet Morris at the parish office at 803.649.4777.

DOMUND

A Sunday for everyone Every year on the penultimate Sunday of October we celebrate the WORLD SUNDAY OF MISSIONS. DOMUND. This Sunday unites all Catholics in the world, in a single community of faith. We are again committed to our common vocation, through baptism to be missionaries through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and our economic contribution, to contribute to the Propagation of faith. In his message for This year's World Mission Sunday Pope Francis asks us to respond to our baptismal call to the mission by saying, "Here I am, Send me." This is the mission that all Christians have received, and God gives us the grace to live it wherever we are.
