Performing Arts Fall Semester: August 15 - December 14 Saturday classes will have their last class on December 19th.

Welcome to the JCC!

Welcome! The Performing Arts Department at the Jewish Community Center of Omaha imparts the joy and discipline of dance, theater, and music through a well-rounded catalogue of programming. For over 40 years we’ve provided dance programming to the community. We offer high caliber instruction in pre-ballet, ballet, jazz, tap, modern, hip hop, leaps & turns, lyrical and pom. Classes are offered at a variety of levels, with all classes providing emphasis on technique, musicality, body awareness and the development of self-expression through movement.

All programs are taught in a caring and positive atmosphere by our qualified and experienced staff. Limited class size ensures students receive greater personalized instruction and the ability to social distance. Attention to detail, such as providing live piano accompaniment for ballet classes, is what sets our program apart from the rest. We also house one of the finest facilities in the metro area. We have gorgeous dance studios that are newly renovated and fully equipped, a 330-seat theater that is currently undergoing an amazing renovation, and new musical training studios on the way.

We also offer a variety of special programs. Choreographic workshops, music lessons, theater and acting classes, performance opportunities with recognized artists, and field trips to area dance events, are just some of the exciting opportunities that await! Performing Arts programming at the J is open to Members and Non-Members, ages 2 through adult. Members receive discounted rates and other benefits. If you are interested in joining the J, contact Member Services at (402) 334-6426.

In order to create an engaging facility that meets the needs of our visitors, we have undergone the process of updating several spaces across our campus. Dance classes are now held in our beautifully renovated dance studios. These fully equipped spaces, located in the Marlene & Marty Staenberg Arts & Education Corridor, feature sprung dance floors to help prevent injury, new sound systems, barres, mirrors and TV’s in the lobby so parents can observe their dancers. These spaces were made possible by a very generous gift from Michael Staenberg.

Additional renovations taking place in the Performing Arts Department include a full remodel of our Theater, new dance offices, new dressing rooms and new restrooms (including a family restroom). When completed our area will also house two new music studios that will allow is to provide expanded piano lessons, vocal lessons and musical instrument training.

In the Theater we are raising the ground to increase visibility for the audience, installing all new seats, a new acoustical system, new rigging, new curtains and new lighting. Our old AV system will also be replaced. The estimated completion date of the Theater project is late winter of 2021.

We are very excited about all of these upcoming performing arts renovations that we will soon be able to share with you. None of this would have been possible without the generous contributions of donors including: Alan J. Levine, Sharon & Howard Kooper, The Simon Family, Linda & Nelson Gordman, Debbi & Speedy Zweiback, Fran & Rich Juro, Anne & Bruce Shackman, Joanie & Richard Jacobson, and Patty & Steve Nogg. THANK YOU!

Each renovation is done in accordance with our mission of building and maintaining a vibrant Jewish community, not only for today but for generations to come. We thank you for your patience as we complete these much needed updates. If you have any questions please e-mail Alan Potash at [email protected] or Mark Martin at [email protected].

Theater ProgramsWhile looking ahead and keeping the health and safety of our community and staff in mind, we have decided that we will not be holding a MUSICAL in the Fall of 2020. We ARE, however, working on a few other opportunities to have in its place. The details will be released as soon as they are finalized. We are hoping to offer a series of theatrical plays that will be just as fun to be a part of. We know we will get to the other side of this pandemic eventually - the side where it’s safe to sing and dance together. We can’t wait for that to happen! In the meantime, keep an eye out for more details on our plays!

Theatrical Plays for Kids & Adults Stay tuned for more details on this fun new program we hope to offer!

Musical TheaterMember and Non Members, ages 8-108, are invited to join our cast! We are a community of actors that support each other’s growth. Our Musical Theater group meets once a week for a two hour rehearsal. During that time we work on general musical theater skills, blocking scenes, learning dances and songs.

Due to covid-19 we will not be having Musical Theater this Fall. This program will return as soon as we can hold it in a safe and responsible manner!

Performing Arts AcademyPerforming Arts Academy is our youth acting classes for ages 5-7! Join us as we explore the world of performing arts and theater. Classes provide learning and fun. Class will be broken into 3 sections:

• Learn acting strategies through games • Learning a song and dance to incorporate into our final showing • Creating costume, sets, and props
