’One of the very few accessible

‘An excellent introductory course from a dedicated team…a practical guide with the language knowledge and cultural tips you need for daily communication with the Chinese people.’

– Wei Jin, The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK

The course presents a unique approach to the introduction of characters. Words and characters are introduced separately, new words appear in pinyin only first, allowing students to master the pronunciation, meaning and use before tackling their character form. Words are also introduced at a faster pace than characters so that students build a broad base of vocabulary for oral communication in their first year of study.

Lessons 1-5 use only pinyin to get students started. From lesson 6 the introduction of characters is staggered and selective; characters are only introduced at the second or third occurrence of a vocabulary item with a focus on the introduction of high-frequency characters. Once the character has been introduced the pinyin is removed. This gradual but complete replacement of pinyin ensures recognition and use of characters. At the same time, the integration of pinyin in the text also ensures that students continue to focus on pinyin as a pronunciation guide and develop accurate Mandarin pronunciation.

Learning Chinese, Turning ChineseChallenges to Becoming Sinophone in a Globalised World

Edward McDonald, University of Auckland, New Zealand

Series: Asia’s Transformations

In this book Edward McDonald takes a fresh look at issues of language in Chinese studies. He takes the viewpoint of the university student of Chinese with the ultimate goal of becoming ‘sinophone’: that is, developing a fluency and facility at operating in Chinese-language contexts comparable to their own mother tongue. While the entry point for most potential sinophones is the Chinese language classroom, the kinds of ‘language’ and ‘culture’ on offer there are rarely questioned, and the links between the forms of the language and the situations in which they may be used are rarely drawn. The author’s explorations of Chinese studies illustrate the crucial link between becoming sinophone and developing a sinophone identity – learning Chinese and turning Chinese.

This book will be invaluable for all Chinese language students and teachers, and those with an interest in Chinese linguistics, linguistic anthropology, critical discourse analysis, and language education.

The Routledge Dictionary of Cultural References in Modern FrenchMichael Mould

‘It reads differently, and is not quite a traditional dictionary; it is interesting in its very own way, and grabs the attention of the reader almost in the same way as a non-fiction narrative does, and one finds oneself move from one expression to the next within a given section, wanting to find out more to confirm one’s own knowledge in French and

presumably to discover more if not.’ – Soizick Solman, King’s College London, UK

The Routledge Dictionary of Cultural References in Modern French reveals the hidden cultural dimension of contemporary French, as used in the press, going beyond the limited and purely lexical approach of traditional bilingual dictionaries.

Even foreign learners of French who possess a good level of the language often have difficulty in fully understanding French articles, not because of any linguistic shortcomings on their part but because of their inadequate knowledge of the cultural references.

This cultural dictionary of French provides the reader with clear and concise explanations of the crucial cultural dimension behind the most frequently used words and phrases found in the contemporary French press. This vital background information, gathered here in this innovative and entertaining dictionary, will allow readers to go beyond a superficial understanding of the French press and the French language in general, to see the hidden yet implied cultural significance that is so transparent to the native speaker.

Key features include:

•abroadrangeofculturalreferencesfromthehistoricaland literary to the popular and classical, with an in-depth analysis of punning mechanisms

•over3,000culturalreferencesexplained

•athree-levelindicatoroffrequency

•over600questionstotestknowledgebeforeand after reading.

The Routledge Dictionary of Cultural References in Modern French is the ideal reference for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of French seeking to enhance their understanding of the French language. It will also be of interest to teachers, translators and Francophiles alike. French students in khagne, Sciences-Po and schools of journalism will also find this valuable and relevant for their studies.

Methods of Language TeachingBlair Bateman and Baldomero Lago, both at Brigham Young University, USA

Methods of Language Teaching is an innovative teaching tool which enables upper level trainee teachers to witness language teaching methods being applied in a classroom.

The DVD shows a series of lessons illustrating methods that have been widely used, as taught by teachers who have made extensive use of these methods in their own classrooms. The

methods covered include the Grammar-Translation Method, the Audiolingual Method, the Cognitive Code Approach and the Total Physical Response Method.

Each method presented includes a brief textual description of the historical background, the theories of language and language learning on which the method is based, and an outline of a ‘typical’ lesson. A video demonstration of some of the most common teaching and learning activities associated with the method is also included, as taught by a teacher in an actual classroom setting.

Methods of Language Teaching is primarily designed for teachers and students of language teaching methods, including ESL classes, but is also a useful resource for anyone interested in methods of language teaching.

The Languages of Japan and KoreaEdited by Nicolas Tranter, University of Sheffield, UK

Series: Routledge Language Family Series

The Languages of Japan and Korea provides detailed descriptions of the major varieties of languages in the region, both modern and pre-modern, within a common format, producing a long-needed introductory reference source. Korean, Japanese, Ainu, and representative members of the three main groupings of the Ryukyuan chain are discussed for the first time in a single work.

The volume is divided into language sketches, the majority of which are broken down into sections on phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax and lexicon. Specific emphasis is placed on those aspects of syntactic interest, such as speech levels, honorifics and classifiers, which are commonly underplayed in other descriptions of Modern Japanese and Korean. Each language is represented in Roman-based transcription, although its own script (where there is such an orthography) and IPA transcriptions are used sparingly where appropriate.

The dialects of both the modern and oldest forms of the languages are given extensive treatment, with a primary focus on the differences from the standard language.

These synchronic snapshots are complemented by a discussion of both the genetic and areal relationships between languages in the region.

Slang2nDeDiTion

Edited by Tom Dalzell and Terry Victor

Praise for the first edition:

‘a veritable Madame Tussaud’s of the vulgar language. it is a really epoch-making, monumental piece of work, carried out with astonishing industry and learning.’ – New Statesman

‘The editors have created a truly new Partridge. it encompasses the entire english-speaking world and focuses on slang and unconventional english used or created since 1945 [...] This Dictionary informs, but it also entertains’ – Booklist

‘it would keep me going until well into the year 3000, as i am insatiably curious as far as wanting to know the origin of words, and have always loved slang.’ – Charlotte Bingham

‘This Dictionary is huge fun. if you get a lot of Christmas book tokens, buy yourself a copy ... it could do more than most to encourage an interest in the history and development of the english language and to nurture a fascination for words and their precise usage.’ – The Times Literary Supplement

‘To [the editors’] credit, no term is excluded because it might be considered offensive as a racial, ethnic, religious, sexual, or any kind of slur. as such, this work attempts to honestly reflect the ‘cultural transformations’ embodied by slang and unconventional english since 1945, a particular turbulent and change-laden time. The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English will be seen by many librarians, both academic and public, as a standard source and a necessary purchase.’ – Against the Grain

‘in this new edition ... the editors have succeeded in remaining true to the Partridge tradition, observing high standards of lexicography while producing an accessible work.’ – Choice

‘Maintaining the integrity of the former editions and adding new words representative of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this Dictionary will be useful to a wide range of readers – Recommended.’ – Choice

‘One of the many benefits of owning the two-volume New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, is that you can dip in just about anywhere and enjoy the exuberant, endless display of human inventiveness with language.’ – BOOKFORUM
