Trinity Times From Peggy’s Pen
When I lived in Pierre, a good friend and I developed a game for when we would go on walks and talk about life. We would each carry a quarter. And whenever we came to an intersection we would flip our quarters. 2 heads meant we kept going straight. 2 tails meant we would turn around. If I had heads and he had tails, we went right, and if he had heads while I had tails we went left.
There were times when we walked the same part of the street 3 times, going back and forth – doing a lot of retracing our steps, walking in circles around the block – just based on the way the quarters landed. I’m honestly not sure how much we actually walked, because we didn’t get very far.
Although these walks were fun – they couldn’t be the way that we did every walk. We never ventured further than a 4-5 block radius from where we began. And since we never had an end destination in mind – well we never really went anywhere.
Sometimes I feel like as followers of Jesus, we get caught up in walking our 4-5 block comfort zone – going through the motion, doing what we know and are comfortable with. We have our cycles, events, and things we do every year, and we do them because it’s what we do. But do we understand our why? Why are we doing what we’re doing?
Our focus for the fall is going to be to figure out our “why.” What is the purpose of Trinity United Methodist Church? Why do we matter? What makes us different and relevant? What would happen if Trinity United Methodist Church disappeared? When we understand our purpose, our why, it gives us direction.
In September, we will be creating a team of people to help create a vision statement for Trinity United Methodist Church – to help provide us all with direction. The team will present it to our leadership, and then to the whole congregation for adoption. You will have an opportunity to sign-up to be part of that process during a Celebrate Ministries Sunday. Your partnership and prayers are important as we continue to seek God’s guidance and direction for our lives as individuals and as the life of Trinity United Methodist Church!
Peace and God Bless, Pastor Peggy Hanson

Change To Make A Change Every month, on the Third Sunday, we will be sharing in a special offering during children’s time. Our children are going to help collect any change (paper or coin), to help make a change. All the collection will go to support a mission/outreach project. Each month will be different. The mission could be local, national, and/or world-wide. Here are our updates! January: Mission Trip to Honduras, we collected $153.49 February: Hygiene Supplies for the Lead-Deadwood schools, we collected $135.37 March: Post Prom Breakfast, we collected $120.89 (*Corrected) April: Camp Scholarships, we collected $271.13 May: Clothe-a-Kid, we collected $258.02 June: Vacation Bible School, we collected $98.72 July: UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief), we collected $104.40 August: Teen Court, we collected $116.34 For the month of September, on Sunday, September, 2019 our change to make a change will go to support the ministry of making and providing Health Kits for the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR). We will be assembling health kits and then delivering them to Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont on Saturday, October 12, 2019. Let’s help make a difference in the lives of many through the vital organization of teen court!

The Power of Prayer
Break Through Prayer Meetings
We will gather on Saturday, September 7 at 9:30 a.m. in the Johnson room to begin our time of prayer. We begin with sharing any God sightings or God-insights that we have felt God has placed on our hearts. We share about how we can be in prayer for our church and the ministries of our church. We hope you will continue to join us for our 1:11 (p.m. or a.m.) prayer! Transforming God, as we seek to open ourselves to your renovating, redeeming grace; we trust in the promise that you are with us. Give us strength of purpose. Guide us on this journey as together we seek to submit our lives to you. For it is in the name of Jesus Christ, our foundation, that we pray. Amen Thank you for joining us in this important ministry of breakthrough prayer!

Unstuck Sermon Series
August 25-September 15 Do you ever feel like you’re just going in circles? Stuck in the same routine? Needing direction and guidance? Needing a change of pace? We would take a cross country road trip without a map, directions or GPS. Why do we think we can live our lives without recalculating our direction? The truth is we all have these moments in our lives when we feel lost, directionless, or just spinning in circles. There is a way off the hamster wheel of life! Join us from August 25-September 15 to hear how!
“Don’t become so well-adjusted to your
culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix
your attention on God.”
Romans 12:2 (the Message)

There are a lot of amazing ministries that happen in the life of Trinity United Methodist Church! Let’s take a moment to celebrate them and learn all that they have done and continue to do! During fellowship on September 15, you’ll have a chance to walk around and see all the different ministries that happen, and even sign-up to assist with either ministry teams or specific ministry events! Each team/committee has been asked to have a display, highlighting who they are and what they do! And also provide a fellowship snack, so you get your food, when you visit all the different displays!
We look forward to you joining us for Celebrate Ministries Sunday on September 15!
New Confirmation Class! All youth and parents who are interested in learning more about what it means to be a follower of Jesus and the Methodist Church are invited to join for a confirmation informational meeting on Sunday, September 15 at 11:00 a.m. in the Christian Ministry Center. (Even if they have the pollen removed), because Pastor Peggy is highly allergic. Any arrangement or plant that is brought in will have to be removed from the sanctuary. Thank you for understanding.

LGBTQ topics and the Bible
There are some who would like me to preach on the topic of LGBTQ inclusion and exclusion. To talk about the biblical authority, to spend time going into deep exegesis and eisegesis of the scriptures. There are some that would hope that I would liberate the LGBTQ community from the oppression of the contextual understanding of the scriptures. While there are those who want me to condemn LGBTQ community as a lifestyle choice living in a sinful nature. The truth is – I won’t. I won’t use the pulpit to engage this topic to distract us from the Good News of Jesus Christ – where it pits person against person. Where it causes division, judgement, and great harm. I believe that the majority of us sitting here today have either a family member or friend who identifies as part of the LGBTQ community. And I, in good faith, cannot stand up here and preach whether or not you should be forced to make the decision between your theology and your loved one… I believe that this is a personal decision that each of us has to make. To seek to understand scripture in its entirety – not looking solely at the texts regarding human sexuality, but fully understanding the words, the laws, and the grace that can be found from Genesis to Revelation. To wrestle with all the scriptures – where these texts give authority to treating people (not just slaves) as property, where these texts justify war, destruction, and death. Where these texts talk about salvation, hope, mercy, and grace for all. Where these texts build bridges, and create great divides. Where great apostles like Peter and Paul agree and disagree. Searching our own souls to discover whether or not our beliefs reflect the truth of Jesus or our own personal agendas eclipse the mission of Jesus Christ. I am a follower of Jesus, claiming the name Christian. It does not mean that I am perfect, but I continue to seek, to follow, and to have my heart and life transformed to be more and more like Jesus. I connect to my faith through the United Methodist Church – a global, beautiful and complicated denomination that connects people throughout the world. And I know that by being United Methodist, what I do and say matters here in Lead, South Dakota, and also has the ability to make a difference in Africa. As a United Methodist Pastor, I have made a vow to serve the church through order, word, service, and sacrament. Through order, I vowed to uphold the doctrines and guidelines provided within the Book of Discipline and Book of Resolutions – even if there are things I do not fully agree with (take a moment and read up on our social principles, there may be things that you too don’t agree with). Through word, I have made a commitment to preach the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ – to everyone, because the gospel is available and open to all. Through service, I vowed to first do no harm, do all the good that I can, and to attend upon all the ordinances of God, also known as staying in love with God. To love God. To love all my neighbors. And finally through the sacraments – I vowed to be in a conduit to share the grace of God – for a sacrament is an outward sign of an inward spiritual grace – a tangible way that we can experience the grace of God. We honor and recognize the sacraments of baptism and communion. Both these sacraments are open to everyone, without hesitation, limitations – it is not my place to say who does or doesn’t “deserve” to participate in the sacraments. My place is to offer the invitation to be transformed through the power of the sacraments. Lastly, if you’d like to engage in this discussion further – wrestle with the texts, to dive deeper, and learn how to respond faithfully in love of God and love of neighbor – you’re invited to join me for a 4-week small group study. Living Faithfully: Human Sexuality and The United Methodist Church. The dates for the study are:
Tuesday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m.,
Tuesday October 1 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 8 at 5:30 p.m.
Please let Pastor Peggy or the office know if you’re interested in attending this class by Wednesday, September 4th, so we can make sure to have enough books ordered.
