I probably don’t need to explain that skiing is fun or that the Alps are the best place to do it, or even that a chalet holiday is by far the best way to enjoy them both. However, what you may not know is that 98.82% of last year’s guests said that not only would they come back with VIP SKI, but that they would also recommend us to their friends. Testament certainly to the great skiing in our world leading resorts during a season when the snow proved abundant, but I like to think an encouraging endorsement of our own efforts nonetheless.

Aside from your gracious praise for our service, there has been one other constant in your feedback over the years; notably the request to enjoy some renowned Austrian hospitality on the other side of the Alps. This year we unveil our first hotel in the Austrian ski capital and world-class resort of St Anton. Thirty-three bedrooms, cosy lounge bar and relaxation suite perched on the hillside right above the centre of the resort. After a long search we are delighted to have found a perfect home for VIP SKI in the birthplace of Austrian skiing.

Since I compiled our first brochure with one finger and a typewriter in 1989, I have been passionate and relentlessly enthusiastic about building chalets and ski holidays that are better than before. 23 years and a few grey hairs later, 220 colleagues and I still care very much about your holiday. We can’t pretend that the fun of the holiday begins at the airport but we can try and get you to your chalet with the minimum of fuss. By chartering our own aircraft we are able to offer you a dependable service from Gatwick and Manchester at a sensible time of the day. We fly on a Sunday morning to avoid the crowds, and we will transfer you directly to your resort without waiting for other flights (and spare you the sales pitch along the way).

St AntonSt. Anton am Arlberg is a truly unique skiers paradise and a bustling bundle of activity by day and by night. The small town with 2,680 inhabitants has maintained its traditional ambiance and is famed for its charming atmosphere and gracious hosts. The village itself is a mix of old and cutting edge contemporary design and the pedestrianized main street is lined with character buildings. The resort oozes the very best of Austrian charm and character.

The Alberg region dates back to 1270, although the first attempt to ski the region was made by the parish priest of Lech much later in the winter of 1895. One hundred years later St Anton was chosen to host the Alpine Ski World Championships and the town underwent a spectacular facelift. Today St Anton vies with Val d’Isère and Aspen as one of the most high-tech and accessible resorts in the world. On everyone’s podium of world’s best resorts, primarily we have been drawn here because this is a skiers’ resort; varied terrain and lots of it, fantastic snow reliability and state of the art lift system. A skiers’ delight no matter what your age and experience.

The après-ski in St Anton is as lively as you might expect of an energetic Austrian resort. The bars rock from mid-afternoon until the early hours, with kick off generally scheduled at the Krazy Kanguruh and Mooserwirt on the piste above the village. Those looking for an equitable mix of ‘ski’ and ‘après’ will certainly not be disappointed. There is plenty to do off the slopes too; the leisure centre has indoor and outdoor pools, sauna and gym. There is a climbing centre, an ice rink, toboggan run, horse drawn sleigh rides and paragliding for the more adventurous.

Hotel Montjola

Hotel Montjola is in a sparkling location above the two main lifts and centre of town. Five minutes walk down (beware the bracing walk back up!) to the main lift, piste and party strip, it is close enough to be in the action but far enough away for peace and quiet and a spectacular view. Just thirty-three bedrooms over seven floors and so all the anonymity and ambiance of a bustling hotel with the intimacy of staff that know your name. We are throwing in our usual VIP SKI team of tradesmen and designers over the summer for a facelift but intend to retain a little bit of Austrian charm to frame the contemporary comforts. The hotel has a lounge and bar with separate games room/library and an impressive relaxation suite with outdoor hot tubs, sauna, steam room, solarium and massage/treatment room.

All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with cable flatscreen TV, WiFi, Soundock and hairdryer. Most have balcony or terrace with a delightful view. Choose from twin, double or Austrian twin rooms, plus family rooms and suites of 3 and 5 rooms; perfect for families or groups wanting all the comforts of a hotel but the intimacy of a front door and private hallway. For those with small ones or weary after a hard day on the hill, we have heated ski and boot lockers on the slopes, and a chauffeured shuttle service to whisk you the two minutes up and down from the piste between 8am and 8pm.

VerbierAt the turn of the 20th century Verbier was little more than a few farmers’ huts and cattle pastures. In 1925 a group of keen farmers hiked up from the valley bottom to ski back down again and unbeknown to them at the time, the seeds of global ski phenomenon were sown. Lying in a wide sunny bowl above the Rhone Valley at the crossroads of Europe, Verbier has managed to retain plenty of Alpine charm to complement the razzle-dazzle and cosmopolitan chic. The village itself is an attractive collection of traditional and modern chalets, stylish shops and world leading restaurants, bars and night clubs. Famed for its après-ski, the village embraces all; from big beers and table dancing at the Farinet, mouth-watering hot chocolate at Offshore and every opportunity to melt your wallet until dawn at Coco.

Glitterati and royal patronage aside, Verbier has earned its reputation through some outstanding skiing. Intermediates and experts will appreciate it the most, with some of the best and most easily accessible off-piste and ‘semi’ off-piste opportunities in Europe. Tortin, Mont Fort, Stairway to Heaven, Rock Garden … evocative names to stir emotion and challenge the spirit. Verbier sits at 1500m and the skiing stretches up to the Mont Fort at 3300 meters, effortlessly reached via one of the largest cable cars in Switzerland, guaranteeing snow throughout the season.

Great skiers need to start somewhere, and Verbier nurtures its young and inexperienced in the heart of the village on the nursery slopes of Les Esserts before progressing to the open, tree-lined runs of Savoleyres and later, the wide open slopes of the glacier.

Our photographer thought that it might be our smartest chalet in the Alps and it is hard to argue with his work. A vaulted ceiling lends some space and grandeur to a very elegant and comfortable décor and this makes for an exceedingly handsome home. Enjoying Verbier is about location, location, location and this property is a three minute walk from the Medran lift and a few minutes further from the village centre. An arm’s length from the action but cosseted away from the noise and clamour. The south facing balcony is bathed in sunlight and the view will make you pinch yourself. If Alpine Top Trumps existed, you would want this card.

More than any other resort, location is everything in Verbier, and this property is a three (yes, three!) minute walk from the Medran lift and a few minutes further to the village centre. ZermattDominated by the mighty Matterhorn, this historic climbing town is both snow-sure and super-chic, combining an abundance of alpine charm with discreet A-list appeal and the unmistakeable smell of heritage. Zermatt village dates back to the Middle Ages, and today ancient barns sit alongside tastefully modern hotels, while the car-free policy preserves the peace.

The lift and resort transport system is very 21st century, offering high tech convenience with minimal environmental impact. The skiing is extensive and varied, most suited to intermediates and experts who can challenge themselves on over 300 kilometres of the highest north and west-facing slopes in Europe. There are three separate ski areas and a delightful drop down into Cervinia in Italy for a day trip with a difference. For the expert skier, the heli-skiiing and the long mogul fields at Triftji are “the stuff of dreams” according to the Where to Ski and Snowboard Guide. Away from the slopes you can enjoy après-ski promenading, serious designer retail therapy, outdoor skating, indoor swimming, horse drawn sleigh-rides and exclusive spa treatments.

As if all this were not enough, Zermatt is also the gourmet capital of mountain restaurants, with no less than 38 establishments offering everything from fondue to finest Italian prosciutto crudo and foie gras, many of them with views onto some of the most stunning scenery in the Alps.

Once inside the tranquil apartment it is difficult to imagine that you are in the very heart of Zermatt and far above the non-stop buzz of the village bars and restaurants. Val d’IsèreRegarded by many as the greatest ski resort in the world, Val d’Isère imposes traditional Savoyarde architecture on an awe-inspiring high mountain setting. The vast expanse of L’Espace Killy, comprising Val d’Isère and neighbouring Tignes, is the highest extended ski domain in the world. The clientèle is as varied as the terrain, from dedicated powder hounds and off-piste adrenalin junkies to blue cruisers and ladies who lunch.

Most of the skiing is at 2300 metres and above and, not surprisingly, the resort has an unrivalled snow record. There is plenty of skiing on your doorstep to keep all but the most advanced occupied for at least a week, but the temptations of Tignes and the views from the top of the Grand Motte at over 3400 metres are simply unmissable and only a few lifts away. Après-ski begins before you’ve come off the mountain with live music at the Folie Douce above La Daille, or ski to the door of Bananas in the centre of town. There are bars, pubs and clubs which rock long into the night for those with unlimited stamina and deep pockets, plus a range of pampering body treatments and shops for those who prefer to conserve their energy for the slopes.

Aspen Lodge pioneered a revolutionary new concept in catered ski holidays in 2002 when it won ‘WHICH Chalet of the Year’, and an exciting re-design and refurbishment from our customary design guru in 2011 has thrown it comfortably into the next decade. Sliding glass doors open from the highstreet onto a smart lounge area with open fire, a reception desk with concierge service and lift access to the private accommodation suites above. There is also a complimentary internet bar with coffee and draft beer, a pool table, and cinema screen for kids’ film evenings, Nintendo Wii battles and SKY sporting events. Bellevarde Lodge Bellevarde Lodge is an imposing stone-and-timber chalet situated on the edge of the Santons piste. Yes, this means you really can click in and out of your bindings a few steps from the ski room door. We used genuine old timbers from a local dismantled farmhouse, Italian marble in the bathrooms and some rather lovely parquet on the floor. The vaulted sitting room has an open fireplace, floor to ceiling glass and abundant plump and inviting sofas from which to enjoy the breath-taking view. After a hard day on the slopes, the terrace hot tub is the perfect venue for beer and bubbles.

The Farmhouse is considered one of the smartest renovations in Val d’Isère. From Tatler to The Telegraph and The Sunday Times, the media have been unanimous in their praise. CLUB Bellevarde

CLUB Bellevarde is our imposing stone-and-timber lodge for 24 guests situated on the edge of the Santons piste. This means that you really can click in and out of your bindings a few steps from the ski room door. CLUB chalets are reserved by the room; this engenders a convivial atmosphere and lovely relaxing place to meet families or other like-minded skiers. There are abundant plump and inviting sofas from which to enjoy a relaxing novel or warm your toes in front of the open fire and a cosy bar with unlimited draft beer and wine. For the young or so inclined there is also the ubiquitous HD TV with Freesat and Wii. The giant vaulted dining room offers a canapé reception every evening and CLUB dining from your Chef with a more flexible menu plan and choice of dishes.

MorzineMorzine is the best possible base from which to explore the Portes du Soleil and first time visitors are often surprised by the excellent tree-lined skiing for all standards around Morzine itself. From the snow-cannoned Pleney nursery slopes to the wide-open reds of the Les Gets bowl, untracked Chamoissiere off-piste or moguls and couloirs of Prodains, the variety is astounding.

The Portes du Soleil is the largest linked ski area in the world, a claim made by many certainly, but only here will you find 2 countries, 14 resorts, 209 lifts, 288 marked slopes, and over 650 kilometres of piste. Lift access from the village to 2000m is quick and easy, and from here you can pick your point on the compass. Switzerland for lunch? Mountain restaurants are a real highlight; value-for-money traditional log cabins with open fires, local speciality dishes and ‘vin chaud’ on tap.

Pretty and traditional by day, the village comes alive in the late afternoon, and those so inclined can drink and dance the night away. The family might prefer the outdoor ice-rink, bowling alley or weekly market. There are also a host of cultural and historical activities that lay bare the village’s traditional farming roots.

Valdez Suite is an elegantly furnished apartment for four that shares an entrance hall with Alaska Lodge and overlooks the high street. It is rare for us to be able to offer such intimate accommodation, and virtually unheard of in such a spectacular location. The suite is spacious and entirely self-contained, comprising of an open plan living area with contemporary furnishings, high tech entertainment system and two quiet en suite bedrooms to the rear of the building. The south facing balcony is perfect for soaking up the après-ski high street buzz.

Du Bois Chalet du Bois is situated on the nursery slopes in the centre of Morzine. The design brief was very simple: ‘a picture postcard, chocolate box mountain retreat’. We sought to fuse traditional alpine decor with contemporary design; and so to the original timber panelled walls, log stove and weathered oak floors, has been added a cool veneer that includes smart en suite bathrooms and wide-screen home cinema. The staple diet of the modern day skier has not been forgotten, with a basement sauna for après-ski relaxation and an outside hot tub into which you can tumble from the piste. The chalet also has a large family suite with private lounge; perfect for a little privacy and seclusion.

Du Pré

Du Pré is a completely charming timber chalet opposite the Pleney Piste. The extravagant living area is tastefully decorated in contemporary French style with log burning stove and large south facing terrace. Upstairs there is a small mezzanine lounge and home cinema while down below there is a hot tub and sauna for easing those ski-weary limbs. Plenty of room for everyone to chat, chill, bubble or steam. There is a drag lift just 40 metres from the door, and the ski school meeting point is just 100m away, making this chalet one of the premier locations in town.

BergerAfter ten years of faithful service we thought it was time for a face-lift and so Chalet Berger will be stripped back and redressed over the summer by our usual team of trades and designers. Clearly the bundles of space remain unchanged but the living area will be properly adorned with plump embracing sofas and we are going to sink the jacuzzi into a brand new wrap around terrace. We couldn't resist adding our signature touch with a brand new media room on the lower floor. All the toys bang in the middle of town, a few minutes walk from piste and lift. It doesn't get much better than this.

MéribelThe Trois Vallées embrace one of the most extensive linked ski areas in the world, encompassing Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Méribel, La Tania and Courchevel. The skiable area rises to 3200 metres at the glorious Cime de Carron, and is criss-crossed by a staggering 615 kilometres of piste. Méribel is intermediate heaven, with its wide, flattering motorway runs, and there’s plenty for experts too, with over 30 black runs and the off-piste skiing on Mont Vallon, rated as some of the best in the Alps. Méribel offers great shopping, an ice rink, a swimming pool and many other Olympic-standard sports facilities. From pavement cafés to Michelin-starred restaurants and vibrant night-life, it’s not hard to see why some people visit Méribel and never even ski.

Very few chalets are located on the piste in Méribel and so to maximise your skiing time and preserve your legs for the slopes we operate our own private Mérishuttle transfer service to and from the snow. Your driver will come to your chalet every morning at a pre-set time and then drive you the few minutes and few hundred yards to the main Chaudannes lift station. You can then call us to collect you from the piste and return you to your chalet as late as 7pm, plenty of time for some ski stories and banter over an après-ski drink at the Rond Point.

Taiga Lodge is our flagship chalet in Méribel and some would say our finest in the Alps. The chalet is positioned in the ‘Dou du Pont’ enclave, or ‘Mayfair of Méribel’. The timber architecture is classic and refined and each of the rooms has been individually and lavishly themed by our interior designer. A splendid 10-person cinema with suede lined walls and huge squashy sofas provides state of the art entertainment. Several terraces make the most of the sun and there is a sauna and outdoor hot tub for a touch of après-ski pampering. The town and piste are only a short walk away.

Indiana Lodge is situated in the trees on the exclusive ‘Dou du Pont’ estate and overlooks the centre of the village. There are few other chalets to rival it in the resort. The living room has a delightful wrap around terrace and each of the bedrooms and bathrooms has been individually themed to combine traditional craftsmanship with cool contemporary styling. There is a sauna and outdoor hot tub, and all the toys including surround sound audio and heated ski boots in the morning. The chalet is only a few minutes downhill walk to town and piste.

Brioche is a wealth of carved wood, elegant furnishings and decorative artifacts; a real home from home and picture-postcard alpine retreat. The pretty bedrooms with hand painted decorative walls and pristine white bathrooms are absolutely immaculate. Refuge Boua

Refuge Boua is the ‘sell-out’ oddball in our Méribel portfolio and favourite of the hardcore Méribel ski cognoscenti. This is a true skiers chalet; fairly basic in design and furnishing, but literally on the piste and next to the lifts at Chaudanne, the main hub of Méribel’s huge ski area and ski school meeting point. The simple but bright and comfortable living space leads to a small terrace with secluded hot tub. The five minimalist bedrooms overlook the piste and have crisp white walls, cosy wood panelling and smart contemporary en suite shower rooms. There are not many chalets on the slopes in Méribel, even fewer that are only a short stroll across the piste to the centre of town.

La PlagneWith skiing at a lung challenging 3250m and with 225km of piste, La Plagne is already a snow-sure and extensive ski area in its own right. Now linked to Les Arcs, even fast and experienced skiers would be hard pushed to cover the 425km of piste that the Paradiski has to offer in a week. Our home is on the piste and next to the lifts in Plagne Centre, perched at 2000m in the very heart of the ski domain.

The resort won't win any prizes for prettiest village, but the altitude, ski in - ski out convenience and outstanding views make it easy to forgive a few 70’s architectural howlers. Plagne Centre is pleasantly lively and easily the best served of all the local resorts in terms of shops, ski-schools and après-ski. The lift system is excellent, with fast access to the high reds off La Grand Rochette and the long easy blues above Aime 2000.

A skiing paradise for beginners, intermediates will also feel instantly at home on the miles of gentle blues and some of the longest vertical descents in the whole of the Alps. Once you’ve found your ski legs, the Bellecote Glacier reds are also eminently achievable, and for the brave, the more challenging blacks beyond. Experts will relish the vast and exhilarating off-piste bowls which are tracked much more slowly than the high-profile resorts.

Summit View

Summit View offers a killer combination of stylish comfort and cutting edge decor at a dizzying 2000m altitude and in an unbeatable on-piste location. Each suite, with three, four or six bedrooms is entirely independent with its own living and dining areas and dedicated chalet host. Many of the bedrooms have additional full size secluded beds for families or smaller groups wishing to share a room.

The décor is tastefully sophisticated, with a boutique-hotel vibe thanks to the luxurious soft furnishings, original works of art, solid oak floors, recessed flat screens and BOSE audio systems. All suites have balconies overlooking the spectacular Grand Rochette mountain and the Front de Neige slopes. A lift takes you down to the piste level, ski school and equipment hire.

Annecy and Bourget are very similar in layout to Summit View suites but are more classically Savoyard in style. Alpe d’HuezAlpe d’Huez is known locally as the Ile de Soleil, Island of Sunshine, and nestles spectacularly in a high altitude bowl with pistes stretching out to every surrounding mountain peak and point of the compass. One of the oldest ski resorts in France, Alpe d’Huez was originally a 14th century mining town, a resistance stronghold during the Second World War and home to one of the earliest alpine ski refuges in 1928. Granted there have been plenty of architectural carbuncles since those early beginnings, but ‘Quartier des Vieil Alpe’ is a pleasant and charming contrast in a more traditional style; a wander round its little back streets peels back the character and tradition of an old mountain village.

The après-ski is as lively as you would expect of a bustling high-altitude resort with all the usual glitz, energy and glamour. There is also a dazzling array of non-ski activities, two swimming pools, an ice rink and a large sports centre with climbing wall. Primarily we have been drawn here because this is a skiers resort; the large beginners plateau, glittering glaciers, lung busting altitude, cast iron snow guarantee, fabulously varied terrain and state of the art lift system make it a skier’s delight no matter what your age and experience.

Le Village

Our exclusive development of five chalets is located at the top of town and next to all the main lifts. Built around an atmospheric cobbled courtyard at a giddying altitude of 2000m, and surrounded on two sides by piste, the five chalets of Le Village characterize the ultimate in ski in - ski out convenience. Instructors actually ski to the boot room door and collect you for your lesson! Those familiar with our previous developments will not be surprised that we have made our usual choice from the à la carte alpine menu; stone walls, slate roofs, vaulted ceilings, solid timber floors, high tech entertainment, snappy chic en suite bathrooms, hot tubs, saunas... all the ubiquitous toys that have become our trademark. Each of the bedrooms is larger than the customary alpine offering and every bedroom has a balcony, some actually spill straight onto the piste.

An exciting aerial people carrier provides transport down to all parts of the resort including the outdoor ice rink and pool. With a nursery slope under your nose, our famed nanny service to look after the kids and spa treatments for a little spoilt indulgence, for the first time the discerning skier seeking supreme comfort can enjoy everything that Alpe d’Huez has to offer.

Les GetsLes Gets has always maintained a certain sleepy caché and exclusivity when compared to Morzine, its nearest and better known neighbour. The resort centre is a delightful mix of cobbled streets, piste side bars and traffic free retail therapy. A traditional dairy farming village at heart and a community that dates back to the 12th century, most buildings conform to the “chocolate box” vision of an alpine ski resort. Visitors to the resort are predominantly French which lends an authentic family atmosphere, but there are many animated bars hosting live music and showing all the big sports matches for a sociable après ski drink or three.

Attractions away from the slopes include an ice rink, a small cinema, an array of interesting food shops and, uniquely for a ski resort, a mechanical music museum. There is also a weekly market selling everything from alarmingly smelly cheeses to the latest fashion for mountain goat herders.

Our property is situated 300 vertical metres above Les Gets in Les Chavannes, the major lift and piste crossroads and at the start of all the cross country ski tracks. From here you can take the bubble lift down to the resort until late in the day or select from a number of gentle pistes down to the lower nursery slopes. The lifts outside the door lead you to the challenging Point de Nyon, the untracked Chamoissiere off-piste or the gentle intermediate Les Gets bowl. Just over the ridge is Morzine from where the variety of the Portes du Soleil is outstanding; the largest linked ski area in the world, a claim made by many certainly, but only here will you find 2 countries, 14 resorts, 209 lifts, 288 marked slopes, and over 650 kilometres of piste. Mountain restaurants are a real highlight; value-for-money traditional log cabins with open fires, local speciality dishes and ‘vin chaud’ on tap.

Altitude Lodge

Altitude Lodge is located on the piste and next to the lifts at 1530 metres altitude in the main Les Gets ski area of Les Chavannes. Green, red and blue pistes weave back to the terrace through the woods where we operate a piste side bar, lounge terrace and lunchtime restaurant open to the public during the day. Residents have exclusive use of two private lounges with an open fire and flat screen entertainment. The funky urban interior boasts lift access to nine bedrooms, including five family rooms, some with balcony or terrace and three with private outdoor hot tubs. The penthouse level has three bedrooms with a private lounge area. All rooms have Freesat HD TVs and BOSE Sound Docks.

On the ground floor there is a wet suite with sauna and massage room plus access to the outdoor hot tub. By day there is a family room for young children to play and eat in comfort and for teenagers to battle with the Wii. By night this becomes a spectacular cinema with HD projector, 92” screen and sounds to make a grown man weep. After 23 years in the game, we think that we might have at last conceived and delivered the ultimate skiing venue.
