Christmas and New Year are my most favorite holidays and this presentation is my present to my classmates so that they should know more about New Year

traditions among different nations.

In Italy Babbo Natale leaves his sleigh on the roof, and through the chimney he appears in the house, where he finds a little milk and sweets left to him for his “reinforcement”. Besides him, the fairy Befana comes and gives gifts to obedient children. As for varmints, they keep an ember to protect themselves from the evil sorceress of Befana.

Father Christmas

In England Father Christmas often appears as a large man, about seventy years of age.

He is dressed in a red suit trimmed with white fur and often girdled with a wide

black belt. He wears a hood, which is often long and floppy, and dark boots. He always carries a large brown sack, full of toys, on

his back. Sometimes he has a beard but no moustache.

Pierre Noel

French Pierre Noel means “Father Christmas”. He rides a donkey and carries a

wicker basket full of Christmas and New Year gifts. Pierre Noel has an evil twin - Per Fuetar. Instead of gifts he bestows children

with rods. He carries them in a bunch. Contrary to Per Fuetar, Pierre Noel puts his gifts in the socks, which hang above the fire

place, and then he leaves the house through the chimney.

Saint Nicholas According to the legend, Saint

Nicholas was the first Santa. He was the first to leave golden apples in the socks hanging above the fireplace. It

was a very long time ago, so St. Nicholas is considered to be the oldest

Santa Claus. He rides a horse. He is dressed in a white bishop's miter and robes. He is always accompanied by a

servant whose name is Moor Black Peter. He follows St. Nicholas with a bag of gifts for good children. In his

hands he has a rod to punish disobedient kids.

Dear Santa Claus, How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I am writing this letter to share my impatience for Christmas. I can hardly wait for Christmas to come! I have already decorated my room in the style of a winter tale. Every night I imagine you appearing through the chimney at midnight… I remember I saw you when I was little!!! We had our appointment at your residence in Finland. With all my heart I also want to thank you for the present you gave me last Christmas. I was dreaming about a new smartphone and that was just the one I wanted. Now I am grown up and understand that wealth is not very important spiritual values. I have good news for you! I am good at learning and always get excellent marks. I am very obedient to my parents. So, I want to ask for a present from you, please. I believe that you can do whatever you want. Please, dear Santa, give us peace and happiness!!! Please, make all sick people healthy!!! Thank you for reading my letter. I got to go now. Hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely yours, Irina
