With more than 40 New York Guernseys parading the tanbark this year, breeders from all over the nation took notice as many placed at the top of deep heifer and cow classes. Monument View Adacka Rita, Maplehurst Les Maya, Luckyvale Grumpy Kiss and Wee Kin Yogi Susan-ET were at the top of the list of animals to watch in 2015.
Rita, bred and owned by Hunter Duval of Monument View Farm, was named Grand Champion of the New York State Fair Junior and Open Shows this year. The Senior Three Year Old then went on to claim 1st Place honors in both the Open and Youth shows at the All American as well as respectively placing 3rd at the World Dairy Expo and 2nd in the Junior Show. Most recently, the Adacka daughter has been nominated All-American Senior Three Year Old for both the Open and Junior divisions.
Hailing originally from Canada, now owned by Donna Whalen of Friendship Farm, Maplehurst Les Maya competed competitively against Monument View Adacka Rita, with both cows switching placings at shows. Maya, a Les daughter, placed behind Rita at the All-American Dairy show respectively, receiving 4th Place honors. Just two weeks later, she took home the red medallion with 2nd Place, topping Rita, which has earned her an All-American Nomination for 2015.
With a pair of powerful Fall Yearlings hitting the shavings from New York, Wee Kin Yogi Susan-ET and Luckyvale Grumpy Kiss lead many shows this year. Kiss, bred and owned by Kristen Gallagher, was Junior Champion of both the Open and Youth shows at the New York State Fair and then went on to place 3rd at the All-American Dairy Show and 2nd in the Junior division. Susan-ET, owned by Donna Whalen, was purchased in the 2014 New York Spring Sale. After having a successful 2014 show season, the Yogibear daughter respectively placed 4th at the All-American Dairy Show but then topped the Fall Yearling Class at the World Dairy Expo. Both Kiss and Susan-ET have both earned themselves All-American nominations once again this year.

First of all, I would like to thank you for playing such a crucial role in helping me develop into the young woman I am today! This year has been one full of adventures and I am so honored to be serving as the National Guernsey Queen.
After Convention in June, I flew back to California where I spent the summer working on a large dairy farm and was able to attend the Western National Guernsey Show in Sacramento. I really enjoyed meeting so many new people and getting to know Guernsey enthusiasts. The only problem was many
members were very concerned why a twelve-year-old from New York was all the way in California without her parents. It took some convincing but they finally believed me when I said I was twenty and a student in college.
After coming back to New York for school in August, I adventured to Harrisburg for the All American Dairy Show. I loved watching the show and being able to see all of the great Guernseys, meet fellow Guernsey Breeders and catch up with old friends. After one of the shows, Cara and I led the youth event where we got to know more Guernsey youth and built more connections.
The World Dairy Expo was one of the best experiences thus far which was held in early October! Cara and I handed out awards for the shows, worked in the Guernsey Booth, and helped with the National Guernsey Sale. When not wearing our crowns, we were there to interact with Guernsey Breeders and meet new people from across the country.
The last National Show that I had attended during my reign was the North American International Livestock Exposition. Being my first time traveling to Louisville, it was very enjoyable to finally be able to experience it!
My favorite part throughout my reign so far has been being able to meet and talk to so many Guernsey Breeders and enthusiasts from around the world! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! –Jenny McKenna
As 2015 winds down, there are now several award applications that are now available for youth
members and future Guernsey enthusiasts.
Current youth members have the option to apply for both production and achievement awards.
Due March 1st, production awards honor youth members for owning high producing cattle,
while achievement accolades reward youth for their accomplishments with their cattle,
academics and extracurricular activities. Both applications also assist when applying for national
awards including production honors and the National Outstanding Guernsey Youth is it gives a
wealth of information to utilize later on.
Youth that currently do not own a Guernsey, have the ability to apply for the Calf Scholarship
Award. Due March 1st, this award has been the start of many Guernsey herds as it allows a
young person a Guernsey of their own.
All award applications can be found on the New York Guernsey website at

2015 marked the 25th anniversary of the Klussendorf-
MacKenzie Award which is presented to an individual
that displays strong character, positive sportsmanship,
is hardworking and possess strong skills in the dairy
industry. Timothy Coon, who grew up on Coon Bros.
Farm in Amenia, New York, was awarded this honor at
the World Dairy Expo on October 3rd this year.
Coon, who is best-known for being behind the scenes at shows, has managed show strings that have yielded several champion honors at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI., the North American Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, KY., and the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA.
While his string houses animals of any breed, in particular, Coon has worked closely with Friendship Farm and Millborne Guernseys caring for cows like Millborne Fame Fiesta, Millborne Tiller Blair, Campbells Regal Utopia, and Wee Kin Farm Yogi Susan-ET.
Coon has also mentored many youth throughout the years, getting them involved in the dairy industry. Tim has been married to his wife, Beth, for 30 years and has three daughters and seven grandchildren. He is very active in his local agricultural community, serving on the Dutchess County Fair board and on the New York Spring Show Committee.
Greetings New York Guernsey Friends! My name is Cara Trotter and I am currently serving as the American Guernsey Youth Association President. If we haven’t had the opportunity to meet, I am a junior at Penn State majoring in Animal Science, with a focus in Dairy and I reside on TrotAcre Farm in Enon Valley, Pennsylvania. I am involved in all aspects of my family’s farm and I have been heavily involved in showing Guernseys as well as attending the Pennsylvania and National Guernsey conventions. Throughout my time in college, I have really enjoyed talking to fellow students, consumers and new enthusiasts about the dairy industry and
especially the A2 gene and components that are specific to Guernseys.
As 2015 is now coming to a close and we look forward to the start of 2016, many of us will (or at least try our best) to stick to our New Year’s Resolutions. I have been thinking about what my resolution will be and the normal ones have been usually coming to mind. Like every student, I was thinking I want to strive for better grades, I want to eventually land my dream internship, maybe shed some unwanted pounds, or get more sleep. I would love to accomplish all of those, but a different goal has come to my mind, that I would like to share with all of you!
This year, I want to promote the Guernsey Breed to fellow dairy farmers, enthusiasts and 4-Her’s, to get our great breed into new herds. I want to target the younger generations, like myself, so that they might have the same opportunities and experiences that I have had growing up in the Guernsey Association. We need to work together to ensure the future of the breed, and I believe that getting new faces and herds engaged is our “Golden Ticket”. I want to Challenge each of you to take your News Resolution to the next step, and join in on the promoting fun!
