THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A GARDEN DESIGN IS MAKING THE PLAN WORK FOR YOUR SPACE

In this design for the New York Roof Garden there are three elements, the highly textured terrace immediately outside the house, the seating area and a wide meadow like border creating intimacy.

The designs that Paul has drawn up for the New York Roof Garden are based on a 5m x 7m garden but on the next page you can find tips on how to adapt this to fit your garden.

Decide how you want your design to work. The garden is based around two distinctive areas. A minimal contemporary terrace near the house, which is separated from the garden by walls and an entertaining space beyond.

The first terrace is near the house is clean and uncluttered the walls draw inspiration from the New York skyline. Paul suggests making them 1.2m high but you can go up to 1.8 without planning if you desire.

Beyond the terrace is an entertaining space with feature wall. This area has two long low benches made using Bradstone products and a wide encompassing herbaceous meadow border that gives the garden a softer edge. This space is ideal for hosting friends and parties in a true New York style but also good to escape into with a book. The feature wall is 1.8m in height for privacy but if you want to create it a little lower then modify to suit your garden and needs.

Paul has used trees to give a further sense of enclosure, if you have an existing tree keep it in the scheme but if not use tree’s typical of those used by designers of roof gardens such as Birch and Amalanchier which give year round interest in colours and bark texture.

Don’t worry if your garden is longer, wider or simply a different shape to Paul’s design. This garden is so easy to adapt. Start by assessing the planting spaces, they can expand and shrink to suit. The next step is to expand or shrink the terraces in relation to you home and the available space. Remember to keep the one furthest away from the house larger than the one by the house – its an escape to area so when you are there it needs to feel generous.

The important thing is not shrink the width of the borders, they want to feel enveloping and generous. Perhaps the biggest alteration you can make to make this personal to you is the heights of the walls, Tall walls will feel more enclosed and private where as lower walls with give a greater sense of openness and can shrink the space so be careful and plan for what you want to live with.

DIFFERENT SIZED GARDENS...

BUILD YOUR BESPOKE BENCH NEW YORK ROOF GARDEN

THE BENCHES IN THE NEW ROOF ROOF GARDEN ARE EASY TO BUILD BUT OFFER A UNIQUE DESIGNER ELEMENT WHICH YOU CAN TAILOR TO YOU GARDEN.

The benches are made from standard construction blocks with Bradstone StoneMaster driveway blocks used as a bespoke seat surface. To complement the feature wall Paul used StoneMaster in Light Buff Washed but you

choose from the range of colours to suit your home and surrounds to really personalise the feature.

The completed blockwork and StoneMaster driveway block units should

be no more than 440mm in height, this is the height of a standard bench

and will be the most comfortable. Paul made his benches 2.5m long to

allow most people to use the bench as a sun lounger on lazy days or to

allow up to 6 people to dine outdoors in comfort.

Finish with a smooth plaster render to cover the construction blocks and paint, again Paul used a deep grey to coordinate with the walls and paving but if you prefer it its a good place to use a bold bright contrasting colour to tie in with accessories or existing colours in your home.

PENNISETUM ADVENA ‘RUBRUM’

Purple Fountain grass has rich ruby read arching foliage and is topped by 5 - 8 cm long fluffy flowering panicles in late summer. Grass turns a wonderful golden colour from autumn. Ht 1.5m.

PENSTEMON ‘GARNET’

Reliably hardy semi-evergreen short lived perennial. Fresh green foliage forming a dense mound is topped with rich parent coloured flowers from mid summer onwards. Ht 60cm.

SARCOCOCCA HOOKERIANA VAR. HUMILIS

Dwarf sweet box is an evergreen slow growing shrub which is covered in highly fragrant winter flowers giving rise to its common name of Christmas Box. Ht 50cm.

FEONICULUM ATROPURPUREA

Short lived open and tall growing umbel. Feathery bronze foliage is topped with flat umbels of deep sulphur. Edible seeds are loved by humans and birds alike! Self seeds. Ht1.5 - 2m.

GERANIUM PSILOSTEMON

The Armenian cranesbill is a hardy geranium with rich rose coloured flowers over a mass of mid green foliage. Makes a large clump over time. Ht 60 - 70cm.

SALVIA ULIGINOSA

The bog sage works wonderfully with its fresh green foliage and spiring bottle tops of deft blue flowers. Reliably hardy. Ht 60cm.

PANICUM ‘WARRIOR’

Soft green mound forming foliage with deep burgundy red tips. Arching panicles of ruby red flowers in late summer and autumn. Good Autumn colour. Ht1 - 1.4m.

PERSICARIA ROSEA

Hardy herbaceous perennial with fresh green foliage the shape of the ‘ace of hearts’ spires of soft shell pink flowers from mid summer through to autumn. Ht 60 - 80cm.

VERBENA BONARIENSIS

Tall growing short leaved perennial with a happy habit of self seeding. Great mid to late season colour. Ht 1 - 1.5m.

RUBECKIA ‘GOLDSTRUM’

Reliably hardy herbaceous perennial with course green foliage and masses of pure golden yellow daisy like flowers with deep black centres from July through to September. Ht 60cm.
