YOUNG LEADERS CONT.

Her key point was “All you need is a plan and some courage. Stand up for what you’re passionate about” Holly Ferling– Female cricketer Holly’s key message was to find the little wins in life. Setbacks will happen, take these as an opportunity to learn! It’s all about your mindset. EMBRACE the fact that you can make change. The leaders had a ball and will remember this experience!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you to Essential Energy for their very kind donation of four (4) cable spools for a project three Year 6 students have undertaken. Katrina Laviano, Teagan Flanagan and Claire Veenhuizen asked if they could refurbish the Year 6 area which is situated at the front of the school. YEAR 6 AREA

Katrina Laviano, Teagan Flanagan and Claire Veenhuizen recently made an appointment to see me with their proposal to add some more outdoor furniture to the Year 6 area so more students could use it. I really enjoyed listening to them justify why this was important and how they were going to fund their project. They had even researched what they could purchase, including costings for everything. They also presented a drawing of the potential layout. I was so impressed. They wrote a letter to Essential Energy asking if it would be possible for the spools to be donated for their project. They said yes! The girls are completing this project in their own time and have given up recess and lunch times to work on it. I am very proud of you all for coming up with such a great idea and acting on it. The girls will now work out what seating they need, and if their initial ideas will still work in their new space. Right: Mrs St Baker, Katrina Laviano, Teagan Flanagan, Claire Veenhuizen and Ian Muller from Essential Energy who turned up to school last Thursday to show us a spool to ensure it was what we wanted. He then returned with a further three (3). Below: The girls sanding back the tops. They are currently deciding what colours they are going to paint the spools/tables.

PE NEWS

It has been a fantastic start to the Year in PE Lessons. With the Oval being out of action while the grass grows we have had fun learning new skills and games on the Basketball Court. This term, students have been participating in skills based games to improve their coordination, timing, spatial awareness and movement skills. The students have been playing games like Flag, Angle Ball, Hockey, Tennis, Storm the Castle, Car Park, Donkey Tail and Basketball. Playing these games has given students the opportunity to develop their PE skills. It has also helped develop their sportsmanship, team work and being able to cooperate with others. Next term students will be starting the Athletics Unit, where they will be taught how to run, jump and throw in various events (Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, High Jump, Long Jump, Sprints and Starts) in preparation for the School Athletics Carnival. I would like to congratulate all the students who bring their hat and drink bottle to PE Lessons, keep up the great work. Mrs Pilkington PDHPE Teacher

TEACHER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

5/6L News We have had a flying start to term 1 here in our classroom. Working hard and keeping busy daily. During the term we have been ‘change detectives’ for Science. Viewing changes to objects and materials when conditions change. It has given students the opportunity to explore melting, evaporating, dissolving, burning and chemical reactions. 5/6L students have also been busy learning about and researching Asian countries for their Geography assessment task, as a part of our diverse world unit. Students have carried out their own research, created their own PowerPoint presentations and will present them to their peers later in the term. Each student has completed their research individually and independently created their presentations. For Writing this term students have engaged with Imaginative and Persuasive writing. Enjoying both a great deal, students have published a lot of their writing on Microsoft Word. Working on typing and presentation skills also. We are all excited to welcome Oliver to our classroom.

MRS GAYNOR CASTELLARO Mrs Castellaro is a valued Assistant

Principal at HPS. She loves watching children grow and learn. Being a part

of the learning journey with her students is ‘wonderful’!

Mrs Castellaro enjoys spending time with her family and having fun. One of

her many interests is caravanning.

KP NEWS

BWW NEWS

The BWW received a new compost bin for the garden. All the money to pay for the bin came from the recycling of the cans, bottles and poppas. A big thank you to Montana for delivering the compost bin.

Literacy We are working so hard to improve our reading and writing. So many of us are bringing in our home readers each week to have them changed over and getting our charts signed each night. In our Sound Waves program we have learnt so many different chants. Ask us to show you some of the chants we know! Numeracy In Maths we have been working hard to write our numbers correctly. We are able to make patterns with different objects in the classroom. We have also been looking at addition and subtraction. Grandparents Day On Thursday April 11th in Week 11 Kindergarten will be hosting a special afternoon tea for their parents, carers and grandparents. Don’t forget to return the note letting us know how many will be attending the performance if you haven’t already done so. BOOK CLUB ORDERS DUE BACK IN TOMORROW FRIDAY, NO LATE ORDERS ACCEPTED

Chicken Pox There has been reported a case of Chicken Pox in our school over the last few days. The infection and rash will go away without treatment, but because chickenpox is easily spread from person to person, a child infected with the virus should stay home until the rash is completely crusted over. Signs and Symptoms Red bumps that looks like

pimples or insect bites Dry crusted sores that

form over the blisters An itchy rash that usually

begins on the belly, back or face and spreads to the arms and legs and else-where on the body

Fever, chills Muscle and joint pain Headaches Use calomine lotion on itchy areas and keep the child from scratching the infected areas to avoid infection by bacteria.
