Our Unique PledgeWhy you should book with the experts...
The SpecialistsWe are one of the UK’s leading specialist tour operators and have been so for nearly 30 years. We know what makes a good holiday and are passionate about each of our destinations. Expert knowledge combines with a commitment to personal service and a passion for all our destinations.
Our New Zealand team know the regions of this beautiful country well, are accredited Tourism New Zealand Kiwi specialists, and are on hand to offer help and advice throughout the booking process – in person, by telephone or by email, whichever is your preference.
This includes booking your complete holiday package, from fl ights and stopovers to all your ground arrangements.
Value for money Contrary to popular belief, it is usually less expensive to book through a tour operator than to book direct on the internet – and far more straightforward! Due to our longstanding relationships with a variety of partners we can secure rooms at key hotels at the busiest times, with excellent rates and very often special offers too. When you book with us you’ll know exactly what is included and what’s not - we don’t believe in hidden extras. We make regular checks to ensure our prices remain competitive.
Price promiseIn the unlikely event that you should fi nd the same holiday arrangements elsewhere at a lower price, our ‘price promise’ means we will do our best to improve on it. But bear in mind, sometimes arrangements which appear the same can be very different so we ask that you forward the details of your offer to our team, either by post or email ([email protected]) and we shall be in touch very quickly!
No surchargesOnce you have booked a holiday with Discover the World, and we have confi rmed it, there will be no further increases regardless of what happens with Pound Sterling, world oil prices and
taxes. There are no exceptions and if you are considering travelling with an alternative operator you might want to ensure you read their small print!
We believe in value for money, excellent customer service and a personal touch when planning your holiday and our friendly, knowledgeable and experienced team is on hand to help you every step of the way. At Discover the World your holiday is as important to us from the time you fi rst get in touch, to the moment you return home.

Booking independently – an informed choice
Your money and customer rights are protectedA key benefi t of booking with a UK-based specialist operator is that you are covered by very stringent British travel industry regulations and UK legislation throughout your holiday. Our air holiday packages are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Through our AITO (Association of Independent Tour Operators) bond, we also offer 100% fi nancial protection for non-fl ight inclusive holidays, ensuring that all money paid to us is protected no matter what. We are also members of ABTA The Travel Association. (formerly the Association of British Travel Agents).
Travel disruptionWe are proud of our excellent reputation for looking after our clients, without question, should the unexpected occur. Our ‘Travel Disruption Charter’ offers a simple and transparent guarantee.
Our team of dedicated travel consultants will do everything possible to rearrange your trip should it be cancelled or if your outward fl ights(s) cannot operate within 24 hours of the scheduled departure time due to a range of natural events. If it is not possible to re-arrange your trip, you will receive a refund of the trip cost you have paid to us.
When you are on holiday, if it becomes necessary to alter or reroute your itinerary, we will make these arrangements at no additional cost to you. In the event your scheduled return fl ights(s) are cancelled and it is necessary to remain in your destination, we will provide you with accommodation and
meals until such time that we or the airline can make arrangements to return you home as soon as possible. For full terms and conditions just give us a call or visit our website.
Reliability We select our travel partners very carefully, based on the highest levels of service, value and quality and we constantly monitor their commitment to customer satisfaction.
Travel informationOnce a booking is confi rmed we will supply detailed literature, such as a handy Road Atlas for our self-drive holidays, which will be ready on arrival in New Zealand.
Flexible pricing In this brochure you will fi nd an indication of the lowest price for each holiday at the time of going to press. Up-to-date pricing is available on our website or can be obtained by calling our team of travel specialists.
Looking after you during your holiday and when you returnIf there are any issues during your holiday, our 24hr assistance service is just a phone call away. And in most destinations, the aid of local agents and partners give you added peace of mind.
This commitment to you does not end when you step off the aircraft; whether you have general feedback, want to discuss any aspect of your trip, recommend a restaurant, or share an unforgettable moment you’ve captured on your camera then we’re happy to hear from you.
In this day and age, it may be quite tempting to try and book your holiday independently using the Internet rather than the services of a specialist tour operator. This is of course an option, but be aware of the possible pitfalls and the potential false economy in doing so. There are various factors to
take into consideration, for example assurance of quality and standards, what happens if the airline changes or cancels your fl ights, or the hotel room you thought you had booked becomes ‘overbooked’? What fi nancial or consumer protection do you have and what happens if something goes wrong on
holiday? You may also fi nd that by the time you have booked all your arrangements there is little or no cost saving and you could well end up paying a lot more. Whilst of course you have a choice, these are things to take into consideration but by booking through us we can take the worry out of these
eventualities by offering quality products, fully bonded and fi nancially protected holidays with trusted ‘package holiday’ customer protection, along with peace of mind that with 24/7 round-the-clock support, we are only ever a phone call away.

Planning Your HolidayThere really is so much to see and experience on these stunning islands that in order for you to get the most out of your holiday to New Zealand a little planning is an essential requirement, especially when your time is so rarely unlimited!
Tailor-made serviceWe know New Zealand in depth and will tailor make any itinerary to suit your requirements. However, only you know exactly what you want from your holiday, so to help us create your perfect itinerary, simply let us have an idea of your interests, timescale and budget and we’ll take care of the rest.
When to goNew Zealand’s glorious landscapes and range of activities can be enjoyed at any time of year – each of its four distinct seasons, opposite to our own, have their own appeal. Summer (Dec to Feb) often brings long, warm days and mild nights, while the winter months (Jun to Aug) are likely to offer spectacular snowy vistas and are the best time to combine with a Pacifi c island stopover. The shoulder seasons of autumn (Mar to May) and spring (Sep to Nov) are naturally warmer than winter, yet are less busy than the summer months.
Where to stayWe can mix and match any style of accommodation, from motels and farmstays to boutique hotels, elegant B&B’s and idyllic lodges.
Activities & excursionsThe perfect enhancement to any itinerary there are certain activities or sights that we feel just shouldn’t be missed. You’ll fi nd a selection of these in our Top 10 Highlights and itineraries or ask our team for further ideas.
Getting aroundSelf-drive or escorted?New Zealand is an easy and friendly country to travel around independently with an excellent network of roads, bus, rail, and air services. Probably the most popular method of touring the country is by car or motorhome. If, however, you prefer to travel with a guide in the company of like-minded people, we can offer a range of small or large group escorted holidays.
“ We would have no hesitation in recommending Discover the World to friends and acquaintances and indeed we are doing just that.”Brian Rae, Tailor-Made Self Drive

Getting Around New ZealandHow you choose to travel around New Zealand is a question of both preference and time. An excellent network of roads makes either driving or coach-travel the most popular options and are complemented by effi cient air, ferry and rail services.
Self-driveThe main advantage of having your own vehicle is the freedom to travel as you please and at your own pace. This is especially true if you hire a motorhome, when quite literally the whole country becomes your potential lodging. In a land where every bend in the road seems to bring another amazing view to savour, such independence is truly appealing for couples, friends and families alike.
InterIslander ferryOperating daily between Wellington and Picton, the Interislander Ferry crossing takes 3 hours with 3 to 5 sailings daily. There is no need to take your car on the ferry. You simply leave it at the ferry depot, check-in your baggage and pick up another vehicle on arrival. However, for motorhome hire, you will need to take your vehicle on the ferry. Pre-booking is essential during peak times.
Domestic fl ightsFlying is a great way to travel between the main centres in New Zealand if you are pressed for time or should you wish to focus on specifi c regions. Air New Zealand is the largest domestic operator offering economy class fl ights to 26 destinations throughout the country. In addition, a number of domestic fl ight routes are offered by Qantas and both airlines also operate Trans Tasman services between New Zealand and Australia.

Rail journeysTrain journeys are both leisurely and scenic and can add a delightful variant to your self-drive itinerary. On the North Island, The Overlander is a glorious journey through the interior, travelling between Auckland and the capital Wellington. On the South Island, The Coastal Pacific runs through Marlborough wine country from Picton to Christchurch via Blenheim and Kaikoura and ties in with the InterIslander ferry service.
The TranzAlpine is regarded as the country’s finest rail journey and operates between
Christchurch and Greymouth across the Southern Alps.
Steam Train Journeys - the ideal option for both rail enthusiasts and travellers looking for something just a little different.
Escorted touringIf you wish to travel as part of a guided tour there are many options available from small group touring with approximately 16 to 20 passengers, as well as larger groups of 40 to 50.
Special interestYou can do just about every
kind of outdoor activity in New Zealand – including golf, fly-fishing, cycling, skiing, skydiving, hiking and walking: New Zealand has 9 Great Walks! We can
also arrange weddings and honeymoons and can design any trip to suit your individual preferences and interests.

NorthlandTwin Coasts - Maritime - Historical RootsStretching 350km north from Auckland, Northland is New Zealand’s only sub-tropical region and with its above average sunshine record and glorious beaches, it is popular with locals as well as visitors. Winters are mild and citrus fruits and even bananas grow among its gentle hills and valleys.
To the east, on the sheltered Pacifi c coast, is the renowned Bay of Islands where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, in which the Maori chieftains sealed their future alongside that of the ‘pakeha’, the whites. Today the Treaty House, Maori Meeting House and 100ft long war canoe compete for visitor attention with the natural attractions. Gorgeous white sand beaches dissolve into a turquoise sea studded with many islands that can be readily explored on a scenic cruise, dolphin swimming excursion or big game fi shing trip.
The small town of Paihia is a favourite place to stay, being centrally located and within
a short distance of Waitangi Reserve, while historic Russell is smaller and more peaceful. Thrashed by the Tasman Sea, the windswept west coast couldn’t be more different, its long beaches backed by dunes and forests of ancient kauri trees.
The oceans meet at New Zealand’s northernmost accessible point, Cape Reinga, a volcanic outcrop at the end of Ninety Mile Beach. Specially equipped coaches drive along this superb stretch of sand and surf, following the trail of the ‘spirits’. Legend has it that the departing spirits of the Maori head north along this route to leap off the headland into the sea.

Pacifi c Coast & Thermal Explorer Beaches - Wineries - Maori Heritage & Culture - Geysers - Volcanoes
The Pacifi c Coast region includes the verdant Coromandel, famed for its scarlet-blooming pohutukawa trees, glorious white sand beaches, secret coves, and luxuriant rainforest. Just south of this sits the varied landscapes of the Thermal Explorer region, renowned for its Maori culture and geothermal Rotorua.
New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula is renowned for its beautiful coastal scenery, wonderful beaches and its rich tradition of gold mining. The scenic Bay of Plenty, with its golden beaches and kiwi and citrus orchards, extends over 200km in a great arc from the Coromandel to the East Cape. Along the coast is the lively port of Tauranga and Whakatane, the base for trips to the nature reserve of Whale Island and volcanic White Island. Here hissing steam and sulphurous gas clouds escape from a desolate crater.
Long and picturesque coastal roads lead to the country’s most
easterly city, Gisborne, which is the fi rst in the world to see the dawn of a new day. Further south, Hawke’s Bay is the second largest wine-producing region. It is here that New Zealand’s most unusual city, Napier, was rebuilt in Art Deco style following a devastating earthquake in 1931.
In the geographic heart of New Zealand’s North Island, the immensely varied landscapes of this acclaimed region encompass fertile farmlands, snow-capped volcanoes, steaming geothermal fi elds and crystal clear trout fi lled lakes. The main highlight of the region, Rotorua, has become one
of the most visited places in the country famous for mud pools, spouting geysers, redwood forests and scenic trails for walking and cycling. The fertile Waikato is home to world-class gardens, the Hobbiton Movie Set and the glowworm caves of Waitomo.
Lake Taupo is another of the region’s hot spots and is peppered with geothermal areas as well as the mighty Huka Falls. And in the Tongariro National Park, the twin volcanoes of Tongariro and Ruapehu display rust red craters, black deserts and cobalt blue lakes and are popular with skiers and hikers alike.

Western North Island, Wellington & Wairarapa Rural Landscapes - Surf Highway - Heritage & Nature - Culture - Boutique Wineries
New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington is renowned for its arts and culture as well as its proximity to nature. Here you can experience culinary delights and the world class wines New Zealand is famed for. Just north of here, the Western North Island region takes visitors off the beaten track and offers a wealth of natural wonders begging to be explored.
Taranaki is the North Island’s “fi n”, a cape that extends out into the wild Tasman Sea. Discover the rugged Forgotten World Highway, a route to Mt Taranaki. Running between Taumarunui and Stratford, the road offers a true taste of the area’s pioneering history.
Majestic Mt Taranaki dominates the landscape, rising to over 2500m. At its foot lies the port of New Plymouth while Stratford is the gateway to Mt Egmont National Park, a favourite with hikers.
The Whanganui River was once the main ‘highway’ inland for paddle steamers and today, river trips still offer the easiest access to this vast region of untouched forest. The poignant ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ is a reminder of the pioneers’ struggle with nature.
Nestled between a stunning natural harbour and the forested hills of the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges lies New Zealand’s vibrant capital – Wellington. Fascinating and friendly it is renowned for its cafes, bars, restaurants and
museums, including Te Papa, the innovative National Museum.
An hour’s drive north sits the Wairarapa, famous for producing fi ne Pinot Noir in its Martinborough vineyards, as well as being home to Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre.

Christchurch, Canterbury & West Coast Whales - Mountains - Parks & Gardens - Glaciers - Wild West Coast - Rainforests
From the lofty Southern Alps to the broad Canterbury Plains, the peaceful spa resort of Hanmer Springs to the bustle of Christchurch, this stunning region is one of great diversity. On the other side of the island, the West Coast is wild and dramatic with wave-pounded coastlines, lush temperate rainforests, mountains and accessible glaciers.
Despite the tragic earthquake of early 2011, Christchurch ‘The Garden City’ is well on the road to recovery, welcoming visitors and offering a wide variety of guest experiences.
North of the city lies Kaikoura, New Zealand’s centre for whale watching. Hanmer Springs, a 90 minute drive, offers a variety of outdoor activities and relaxing thermal pools.
The iconic mountains of the Southern Alps and magnifi cent
Aoraki Mt Cook form the backbone of the South Island. The east to west traverse of the range links Christchurch and Greymouth, via the national park of Arthur’s Pass. This is also the route taken by the remarkable TranzAlpine railway.
On the West Coast fur seals and colonies of rare black petrels, white herons and blue penguins breed. Sleepy Karamea, in the north, is the gateway to the vast wilderness of Kahurangi National Park, with its legendary
limestone caves and arches. Greymouth is the largest town and a centre for exploration. The Pancake Rocks and blowholes of Punakaiki are backed by the forests of Paparoa National Park, whilst Hokitika is known for greenstone (pounamu) carving.
The Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers are without doubt the greatest lure of this region. Nestled on the edge of the rainforest they are amongst the fastest moving glaciers in the world.

Southern Lakes Lakes & Fiords - Mountains - AdventureThis picturesque southern corner of New Zealand has achieved almost legendary status for its superb scenery and range of adrenaline-charged activities, including skiing. Quieter, but equally beautiful, Te Anau is famed for its glow worm caves, and is the gateway to the serene landscapes of Fiordland National Park. Nowhere else in the country is there such a concentration of mouth-watering scenery. The fi ords of Milford and Doubtful Sound cut deep

Dunedin & SouthlandNature - Pristine Wilderness - HeritageWith an abundance of natural wonders that includes some of the best wildlife viewing in the country the South Island’s southern tip can also lay claim to the most interesting architecture in the elegant and stately city of Dunedin. Framed by a magnifi cent harbour the city is the main centre in the region.
Boosted by riches from the 1861 gold rush, Dunedin grew from an isolated outpost to a bastion of European culture, whose architecture could be equally at home in Edinburgh. With New Zealand’s oldest university and a thriving youth culture and rock music scene, abundant pubs and cafes, this is the place for lively nightlife as well.
North and South of the city, the rugged coast is peppered with unusual geological formations, sheltered sandy bays and sheer cliffs, including those of the Catlins, a vast forest and coastal reserve, popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Not surprisingly, the region’s
wildlife is a big draw, with onshore colonies of penguins and albatross on the scenic Otago Peninsula, which also boasts dazzling rhododendron gardens at Glenfalloch. For rail enthusiasts, the 77km Taieri Gorge Railway ranks among the world’s great rail journeys.
Invercargill, New Zealand’s southernmost city also has a marked Scottish character and its streets echo the names of highland rivers. Ferries depart from the nearby port of Bluff for the hour-long crossing to Stewart Island, most of which now comprises Rakiura National Park.
Sandy beaches and lush rainforest form the landscape, providing the natural habitat of the kiwi making it one of the best places to observe this bird in the wild.

New Zealand Touring OptionsDiscover the World offer a range of options for your holiday to New Zealand – from Budget to mid-range or Superior touring, specifi cally designed to suit every budget!
We are aware that for many, New Zealand is now a costly destination to visit, both in terms of airfare and day to day living expenses. We are committed to making this spectacular country, and one of our personal favourites, as affordable as possible.
The increased cost of airfares and airport taxes is a signifi cant factor in holiday planning. Discover the World work with all the major airlines, including a number of low-cost carriers, to enable us to offer our clients the most cost-effective and competitive airfares on the market.
Over the last few years the Pound sterling has weakened against the New Zealand dollar, having a much more signifi cant fi nancial impact than ever before. With this in mind we are delighted to introduce a new series of “affordable” packages. These packages allow you to be completely self-suffi cient during your holiday, whether travelling independently by Motorhome, or by rental car.
Our Motorhome itineraries allow you the fl exibility to travel around New Zealand freely, at a pace to suit, and to self-cater as you do so. We also have a number of
self-drive itineraries which feature a range of accommodation at a very affordable cost to suit your individual budget.

Airfares – the BEST price for you
We have worked with Air New Zealand for many years. With an exemplary service, both in terms of onboard experience and an impeccable record of on-time departures and arrivals, it’s an obvious choice and partnership.
No one knows New Zealand and the South Pacific better than Air New Zealand. With daily flights from London Heathrow via Los Angeles or five times a week via Hong Kong, Air New Zealand offers a one-stop service to Auckland and Christchurch, along with great connections to its domestic network with 27 destinations around New Zealand. Try its unique Kiwi style hospitality, spacious Pacific Economy seating or Economy Skycouch, and an award winning Premium Economy and Business Premier class service.
Booking flightsOnce you have an idea of when you wish to travel, simply telephone or email us for a quotation for your holiday itinerary including flights. We’ll need to know your planned departure and return dates, and if you are planning a stopover on either or both journeys. Finally, let us know if you have a preferred airline or preferred route (one will often dictate the other) and your favoured cabin class.
The best available airfare is usually determined by how many seats have been booked on your chosen flight - the busier the flight, the higher the price of the remaining seats. We recommend you book early for travel during the popular summer months and other peak times such as school and public holidays. Airport taxes are subject to fluctuation.
AirfaresThere is no such thing as a standard price for flights to New Zealand, costs vary according to time of year, route flown and offers available. However a reasonable indication of air fare costs is between £450 and £1000 (excluding airport taxes) based on economy class travel.
Low cost airlinesOne of the biggest challenges in booking a holiday to New Zealand is securing the best available airfare. Whilst a number of low-cost airlines, for example Air Asia, advertise the lowest possible airfare there are often hidden additional charges including airport taxes and fees, fuel surcharges and local airport taxes which have a significant impact on the final cost. Discover the World will always quote based on the best available airfare with transparent prices including airport taxes.
StopoversOne of the great things about travelling to New Zealand is the huge range of stopover options available. Allowing you to visit exotic islands or some of the world’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, it makes a lot of sense to break your journey on a long-haul flight and often involves little or no flight supplement. Contact us for additional options and extensions.
Other international airlinesWe can offer a range of alternative airlines for your journey to New Zealand including Emirates Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Air Pacific amongst many others. For further details of the options available to you please contact our experienced sales team who will be able to secure the best fare available to suit your individual requirements.
