Breeding and selection objectives and management

Southland hill country is prone to. The balance between performance, profit and environmental constraints is being achieved under a sustainable management regime with this Perendale ewe flock.

Ewe hogget selection criteria

– Endeavor to keep a consistent type of hogget so flock is even.

– Must have good constitution, body length and good thick bone structure.

– Avoid tight/ fine fleeces, black spots.

Initial hogget selection begins at lamb shearing early to mid-February. 1600-1650 desirable types are then run together to enable genetic potential, not just environmental and management potential, to be displayed. This is cut to 1350 at the start of April.

Flock breeding objectives

– To produce an efficient medium framed ewe flock that is easy care and has low labour and animal health inputs.

– Ewes must have good constitution that will enable them to thrive in adverse conditions.

– The flock will consistently produce an unassisted lambing in excess of 140% (survival to sale).

– Maintain strong maternal traits while producing lambs of good carcass conformation that will consistently finish quickly to 18 kg plus carcass weight.

– Fleece wool will have good style and crimp; avoiding fine, tight types and weak backs.

These objectives have given us a sheep flock that consistently thrives in the extremes that Northern

Ram selection for main ewe mob criteria – All rams twins from twins

– Solid hind quarters, but not big in shoulders

– Good length with sound constitution and composition to go with it

– Thick bone structure

– Sound fleece, avoiding tight/ fine fleeces as they are hard to dry for mid winter shearing and more susceptible to aussie fly attack on backs.

– Sound on feet

– Good eye muscle

THE ULTIMaTE 3 waY DRENCH

It’s time to evolve to a superior drench. MATRIX is the ultimate three way oral drench

with unsurpassed efficacy against mixed infections of gastrointestinal parasites,

including those with single or dual resistance to any of the three major drench families.

Both sheep and cattle parasites are demonstrating varying levels of resistance to the commonly used drench families costing

New Zealand agriculture an estimated $300m annually. Triple combination drenches are the ultimate tool for slowing this down.

Choose MATRIX to help prevent resistance on your farm, now available with dose rates suitable for sheep and cattle.
