Market UpdateIn the development space demand for full stack developers

continues unabated, with experienced candidates not lasting

long on the market and often receiving multiple, competing

offers. Those in particularly high demand include .NET

developers with front-end experience and capabilities in

JavaScript and modern libraries such as Angular and React.

Pure front-end developers, back-end developers and JavaScript

engineers also remain highly sought after in the New Zealand

market.

In the testing space, automation experience is still highly

coveted while traditional manual testing roles have been in

slow decline as the need for those with scripting skills steadily

increases. Versatility is often a key deciding factor; Selenium,

Specflow and SOAPUI in particular have become commonplace

on employer wish lists. A demand for testing professionals with

strong technical skills who are able to read and write common

coding languages is fast becoming the norm.

Looking ahead to the second half of 2016 it appears as though

a continued shortage of IT professionals will continue to drive

increased contracting rates. This was reflected in the Global

Attract survey with just 3% of software development and testing

professionals predicting a rate decrease. In the Auckland

market new start-ups entering the scene and competing with

larger enterprise accounts, are also driving contract rates

upwards particularly with front-end Developers. This is leading

to a growing number of employers who are willing to accept

candidates who fit 80% rather than 100% of their framework

and library requirements, in favour of a proven track record with

bleeding edge employers.

Such a buoyant market leads to increased mobility and the

Global Attract survey found 56% of Software Development and

testing professionals are intending to change jobs in the 12

months. Contractors Global Attract work with report receiving

3 approaches a week from recruiters and have resorted to only

responding to texts at designated times of the day.

Permanent salaries have not experienced large movement in

the sector with 36% of respondents reporting no remuneration

increase within the year, coupled with 32% of candidates

reporting that they haven’t received a salary review in the last

year. However job satisfaction is high in the sector as employers

continue to provide competitive benefits packages to attract this

in-demand talent pool. A clear payoff of this is high engagement

rates in the sector where only 8% are currently disengaged

at work, in an environment where 51% of employees are

reporting flexible working arrangements. This is highly reflective

of candidate preferences as the most important benefits in this

sector were by far over 20 days holiday and flexible working

hours.

In such a buoyant market we recommend employers consider

their requirements carefully and balance these with benefits that

are attractive to this sector such as over 20 days holiday, flexible

work options and annual bonus schemes.
