On Arrival

The main international airport arrivals are in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington with feeder flights to other citiesA meet and greet and transfer service is recommended on arrival. although arriving at any of these airports is quite easy with clear signs on what to do and where to go. Pack Ya Bags however, does recommend on your first visit to have someone meet you with a sign especially in your own language. This will make you feel welcome to NZ.

A bit about New Zealand

There are two main large islands making up the bulk of New Zealand, the North Island and the South Island (sometimes called the mainland. Other major islands are Stewart Island, Chatham Islands and lots of smaller ones. Both the large islands are around 1000 klms long each so don’t try and tour New Zealand in 5 days! The country is incredibly varied from mountains to forests to flatlands and lakes. The country is used as a backdrop to many major films shot here such as Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Many people call New Zealand the Adventure capital of the world. I think they could be right!

A few more things of interestIt is not a requiement to tip in New Zealand and is not expected. If you feel you have had good service you can do so.People in the country are very friendly and often go out of their way to help you. A big smile goes along way to brake barriers down and you will feel the reward coming back. And the country has fantastic restaurants, bars and cafes.

AirlinesA number of airlines service New Zealand both to and from countries around the world and within New Zealand.

Many airlines fly daily to New Zealand from many countries in the world. There are transfers to other towns and cities with Air New Zealand, Jetstar and a number of small local airlines. Small charter and schedule aircompanies are also popular to reach the small islands such as Great Barrier Island.

Please ask Pack Ya Bags for assistance.

Getting Around

Travel throughout New Zealand is easy. Flights are regular, and usually inexpensive and service all points in New Zealand. However, sometimes flights are not available between the smaller country towns.Bus services are frequent between destinations and can be excellent value throughout New Zealand. Car hire, campervan (RV) hire, bus charters, taxis and limos are other methods. Other fun ways are by cycle, both pedal and battery driven, and scooters. So lots of ways to explore.

Auckland and District including Waiheke Island

Auckland:Auckland is one of the main entry point to New Zealand. The city itself is situated on a narrow land mass separated by 2 harbours each side. So in a sense Auckland is surrounded by water, hills and wonderful scenery. Many walks are available in many of the districts. Auckland has many excellent beaches, vineyards, shopping areas and malls, art galleries, parks, and many other activities and interests to suit everyone.

Pack Ya Bags will help you get the best of your time here as we know where to take you within the time you have available. Night life restaurants and cafes are everywhere, so you can be fed and watered wherever you go.All styles and levels of accommodation from budget through to apartments and boutique hotels, to ritzy and luxurious internationally branded hotels. You name it we have it.

Things to do:

Besides the shopping, eating and nightlife, being based in Auckland gives many options with excellent day and overnight touring.Because the city is positioned on a huge harbour system, boating is of great interest, whether it be on one of the America Cup boats or taking a ferry to places such as the volcanic Rangitoto Island. Other Islands such as Waiheke Island has been named in a number of international travel guides as being one of the top world islands to visit. Who are we to say otherwise? For the adventurous you can jump off of our Sky Tower, or even eat at the revovling restaurant, maybe visit one of the many dorment volcanoes that scatter throughout the city. We have a Sea Aquarium and the Auckland Zoo both well worth a visit.

What People Say:John and Jane K:We have seen Auckland grow during the last 10 years into a world class city. If you like your food then Auckland really does offer almost any type of food from almost every country in the world. We love eating out and we can find something different every night. The fact we are so close to a magnificent harbour and wonderful offshore islands like Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island, allows us to really get the most from this lovely city.

Pack Ya Bags: We recommend a 3 night stay in downtown Auckland with a day trip to Waiheke Island to enjoy the water, wine and glorious beaches. With another day exploring the west coast area of Piha ore even a day trip north, you will have the perfect break!

Northland includingBay of Islands, Paihia, 90 Mile Beach

Northland:

Northland is a area north of Auckland and is one of the most diverse areas. The main city is Wangarei. You may have heard of the Bay of Islands and 90 mile beach (for some reason it is only 55 miles. mmm go figure that one). However, the whole of the north is a stunning area. 90 mile beach is actually a road on the beach surrounded on the way with sand dunes, where you can slide down on sleds. The trip north will take you all the way to Cape Reinga, the most northerly tip of New Zealand. The Bay of Islands has around 144 islands in the group with boats, ferries and adventure style activities on offer. Take the ferry to one of New Zealand’s famous historical towns called Russell, and the most important historical site of Waitangi, where the treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. The area is also a divers paradise in the Bay of Islands and the Poor Knights (see the diving page).

Waitangi Treaty Grounds:

No visit is complete without a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. This historical site is where the founding document was signed, and today it still has many ramifications between the peoples of New Zealand. You can get a day pass and a guided tour of the grounds and the largest ceremonial war canoe. During the summer a Hangi and evening concerts are performed.

What People Say:Paul GIn the Wiapoua Forest in the Far North of NZ is where I had heard about the large Kauri trees, but to my amazement the size of the Tana Mahuta Kauri tree just blew me away, as it is far bigger than anything I had imagined The tree is more than 2000 years old! I thought about what it would say if it could talk to us about the history. Certainly a magical experience.

Getting There:

Hire car, or campervan is perhaps the the best way to get around the north although you can catch a bus to Wangarei, Bay of Islands or one of the small towns. There are many complete tours on offer to the North to take in all the places of interest. A good 4 days or more would be good to explore.

Pack Ya Bags does have tours to this area or can create one for yourself or group for whatever the reason.

Suggestion:There are a number of one day tours from Auckland to the north, We recommend a 4 day 3 night tour to experience the norths many attractions such as Bay of Islands,

Page 6: New Zealand - Pack Ya Bags Travel · 2019-05-31 · New Zealand New Plymouth Whanganui Hastings Waiheke Is Great Barrier Is 90 mile beach Whangarei Cape Reinga Queenstown Fiordland

Bay of Plenty:From Coromandel south is the main city in the Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, a deep water harbour and port, where cruise ships call during the summer season. The city has many great restaurants on the seafront. Mount Maunganui is a small vibrant beach town just over the bridge and is very popular as a tourist seaside town, traditionally with local New Zealanders, but now attracts many international guests from around the world.Further along the coast going eastwards, another town called Whakatane is the gateway to White Island an active marine volcano where most days you can witness a smoke plume sprouting from the top of the volcano. You can explore the volcano with a guided tour and for those divers you can get the opportunity to actually dive on the island as much of the volcano is underwater. Native birds and wildlife can be seen at another island called Whale Island.

East Cape:Carrying on East we can explore the little known East Cape, a rugged and much less visited area of New Zealand.A great way to see this area is by a small group tour organised by Pack Ya Bags or self drive stopping off wherever you want to experience the natural landscape and meet the local people. Gisborne attracts many people for the new year celebrations, as it is the first place in the country to celebrate the coming of the new year and the first city in the world to see the sun each day. The area is famous for its Chardonnay wine.Other places to visit on the way around is the East Cape Lighthouse. You can walk around it but unfortunately you cannot go inside. It is well worth a visit. If you are feeling fit, a hike on Mount Hikurangi should be considered. The mountain is the highest non-volcanic mountain in the North Island.

Coromandel:The Coromandel encompasses a peninsular north of the Bay of Plenty and situated around the Hauraki Gulf and the Firth of Thames. The spectacular scenery is due to the steep and hilly countryside. A little town called Coromandel is very much an artists town, with perhaps the most famous attraction being the Driving Creek Railway built by a potter named Barry Bricknell, who had a vision to build a railway to the very top of the surrounding hills. The top is called the Eyefull Tower. This is not to be missed.Whitianga is situated on the other side of the peninsular a great base to explore the area.Hot Water Beach known for its natural hot springs is right on the beach, I found it to be a very beautiful place because the area is big enough for sitting down in the warm pools of fresh hot spring water where you are close enough to strike up a conversation with other friendly people from all over the world. Simply magical!

A busy city with many restaurants, shops and lively night life. One of the most spectacular gardens to be seen anywhere in the world is situated in Hamilton with themed layouts such as the Italian and Japanese gardens, English flower, and Chinese and Indian gardens. As well as these a sustainable herb and kitchen garden has been planted. Fantasy, Cultivar and Landscape are others. This is truly one of the worlds best.Hamilton has a 600 animal zoo, regional Museum and Astronomical Observatory.

Other areas in the Waikato:A small seaside town of Raglan, is a beach town renowned for its surf breaks especially its left-hand break.Another small town worth stopping in Cambridge is a centre for training and breeding thoroughbred race horses, producing many champion world class racers over the years. The main cities are Napier and Hastings, both famous for the Art Deco buildings. There is an an-nual Art Deco Festival where many thousands of visitors and locals dress in the 1930s style including a huge amount of vehicle from that time to be seen riding around the cities. This is a great wek long festival to attend into you travels.

Wellington: Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and is the seat of government. Wellington is a small city and can be walked around with ease to visit all the various attractions it has. The waterfront with its walkways, cafes and bars is a good way to feel why Wellingtonians enjoy living there. It is a very art oriented city with many restaurants theatres and night entertainment giving a great fun and vibrant time.

The national museum called Te Papa is essential for your visit to the capital, as well as the famous Weta Studio, where the special effects for the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings were made. Cuba street is a very busy shopping street and will reward you with good shopping

There are two ferry companies operating from Wellington to the south island . The ferry crossing takes around 3 hour plus with 30 minutes sailing in the fabulous Wellingtom Harbour with photographic scenes of the city from the sea. When arriving on the south island the ferry takes around one hour sailing through the channels of the Marlborough Sounds. This trip is spectacular and well worth taking the extra time to do it rather than fly. Wellington is a small city and easy to get around. A couple of days is recommended to walk the city and sample the waterfront and certainly on a sunny day nothing better than to sit at one of the waterfront cafes admiring the harbour and watching the world go by.

Zealandia: ZEALANDIA is the world’s first fully-fenced urban eco sanctuary, with an extraordinary 500-year vision to restore a Wellington valley’s forest and freshwater ecosystems as closely as possible to their pre-human state. The 225 hectare ecosanctuary is a groundbreaking conservation project that has reintroduced 18 species of native wildlife back into the area, 6 of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years.

Marlborough and Nelsonincluding, Picton, Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Golden Bay

Collectively known as the Top of the South, the whole district has a wide range of interests for everyone. The arrival point is Picton after a three hour ferry from Wellington. The last hour sails through the spectacular Marlborough Sounds. Other options are to fly to Picton, Blenheim and Nelson.

Marlborough is famous for it’s winery area especially the Savignon Blanc refreshing wine which is now found throughout the world. A winery tasting tour is a must if you like your wines. A chocolate factory is also worth including into your itinerary.

Over to the west is the city of Nelson with it’s vibrant centre and great weekend markets.

The city is situated in a highly picturesque bay Further around the bay takes you to the Abel Tasman National Park and if your interest is walking or kayaking, this is the place to go. The very beautiful and remote Golden Bay with it’s amazing beaches and a unique spit extending out into the sea which creates a massive seawall barrier 26 km long.Allow time to do the things that interest you. What people say:

Penny C say when she lived in this area as a small child very few tourists would know about the Golden Bay as the road over the hills were unmade and took more than an hour to get there. She says she used to go fishing with her Dad for their evening meal. Much of this still survives and a real road exists now. some wonderful places to visit such as.

Christchurch:Christchurch has certainly had it’s ups and downs in recent times with a large earthquake destroying much of the city centre itself. The people who live in the city certainly have a love affair with their region as the rebuild process kicks into gear. The city is getting it’s vibrancy tag again nearly 7 years after the event and the city is once again a great place to be based to explore this wonderful area. It has a very English heritage feel to the city conplete with a meandering river through the centre called the river Avon. Take a relaxing punt down the river and see some of the wonderful trees, parks and botanical gardens. In the evening all the vibrant restaurants and cafes are back.

Antarctica:Christchurch is one of only 5 cities in the world acting as a departure city for expeditions to Antarctica whether it for scientific purposes or tourism. If you want to go to Antarctica Pack Ya Bags has some excellent tours with various ships and you can even dive if you want to

Akaroa:Situated on the Banks Peninsular around 75 Kilometres fron Christchurch is Akaroa a French and British settlement . It is a village with quiant cafes and various tours around the harbour.Day trips can be had either up into the southern alps to see lake Takapo in the high country or to one of the ski fields in the winter months.

International Antarctic Centre:The centre is an authentic interactive experience of Antarctica and as many of us are not likely to visit that continent this is the one to visit. Even experience an Antarctic storm!, learn about Scott Base and see the beautiful blue penguins.

Lyttelton Harbour:Lyttelton Harbour is a short drive via a tunnel from the city and is a small port town where many settlers arrived in the 18 hundreds. The harbours is very picturesque.

Chatham IslandsOften forgotten by the tourists as it lies some 650 Kilometres from the the mainland of New Zealand. There are about 10 islands in the group. The island are hilly with cliffs, dunes and beaches. The Te Whanga Lagoon is a sight to behold. Only around 600 people live on the islands and you can be sure of a welcome from them to your visit. You can make this into an adventurous visit with such things to do as walking, birding, diving and fishing. One out of the box for a visit.

Christchurchincluding Lyttleton and Akaroa and Chatham Islands

High Country (Mackenzie Basin)including Mt Cook and Tekapo

Mackenzie Basin: The basin itself stretches around 100 Kilometres from Burkes Pass in the north to Lindis Pass in the south and incorporates Tekapo and access road to Mount Cook. With the Southern Alps on one side the scenery is spectacular. The area was named after James Mackenzie who was reported to be somewhat of a sheep thief. It was a harsh country with few people but lots of sheep.. Today we still see lots aof sheep and cattle.being in the high country It is home to artificial hydroelectric lakes and is an important source of power for New Zealand.

Much of the area is used in films these days such as Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. This area is an adventure playground.

Due to its clean, dry and dark sky, the Mackenzie Basin serves as an important area for New Zealand-based astronomy, with a number of related facilities located there, Astronomy-related tourism is an increasing contributor to the area’s economy, Mount Cook village (planetarium) and Omarama.Gliding is another common activity within the Mackenzie Basin, and the area was host to a Gliding World Cup event in 1995, as well as being the home of several gliding clubs, airfields, and numerous private glider pilots, of both amateur and professional status.

Tekapo: Beside the beautiful lake and good accommodation and cafes is the most photographed church in New Zealand, The church of the Good Shepherd.

Mount Cook: Aoraki / Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand and is situated in a national park which contains more than 140 peaks.Mount Cook village is the small village offering accommodation and is certainly used as a stepping stone for those experienced climbers who come from around the world to climb this very New Zealand Icon..The mountain on a clear day can also be seen from the West Coast .

Salmon Farm: A must stop is at the High Country Salmon Farm to taste the fresh salmon and even feed the fish. The farm is a floating farm set on the glacial waters of the Wairepo Arm.

Dunedin:Dunedin is a very picturesque city, situated at the head of the Otago Harbour. It is surrounded by hills and in a travel book from 1895 was described as one of the prettiest cityscapes in the world. It is a university city so full of vibrancy and if you like old buildings there are some fine examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. A trip on the harbour or by road you can see penguins and an Albatross colony. Hiking and cycling tracks are available and as in any good city offers plenty of restaurants and shops to keep interested. Dunedin is one of my favourite.Larnach Castle dates back to 1971 built by William Larnach for his wife. it took 3 years to build by more than 200 workers so very much a folly. It has since been totally restored and still owned by a private family.

Central Otago:The towns of Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Roxburgh and Ranfurly are ideal bases from which to explore the surrounding historic countryside. These areas are huge for the production of grapes for the Pinot Noir and growing a vast variety of fruit. Cherries in season are particularly nice.

One of the growing activities now, is the Otago Central Rail Trail. It is 150 Kilometers and includes walking, cycling and horse riding track. This has really been a pioneering project in New Zealand and has led to a number of other projects throughout the country. So if you really want to try some of the most interesting countryside get walking or cycling otherwise bring your own horse! Of course we can supply them for you.

Oamaru:Part of this town is like walking back in time, as many of the old buildings and streets are as they were in the 19th century. Businesses and local people work to keep the atmosphere and create a wonderful historical street to visit. This is also home to the Blue Penguin. A number of penguin areas can be accessed including a viewing area in the habour of the town.Just a little way south is the Moeraki Boulders huge round balls of rock laying on the beach (see photograph). The origins are unclear.(but lots of suggestions).

Much of this region can be covered by one of Pack Ya Bags special tours. Including a visit to a great cheese factory.

West Coast South Islandincluding Haast, Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers, Hokatika, Punakaiki Rocks

The West Coast:The west coast of the south island is certainly one of the last wilderness areas on New Zealand, with times when you can drive and not see another vehicle for along time.If we come over the mountains from Wanaka and Queenstown we drive over one of the passes to reach the West Coast. In this case we travel over the Haast pass perhaps making stopping at the blue pools where you could see a brown trout swimming past! Along this coast there are many places to stop including the famous Glaciers

Glaciers:Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers are perhaps known by many visitors prior to coming to the country. Walking or tramping with a guide or helicopter are all popular.

Hokatika:A small town and a good base to stay to explore the area. Lots of cafes and bars and an excellent museum showing the historical heritage of yester year on the west coast of New Zealand.

Greymouth:The largest city on the West Coast with plenty of accommodation. Just south of the town is a village museum called shantytown which gives a glimse of how gold mining towns were a 100 years or so ago.

Arthur’s Pass:Connecting Greymouth with Christchurch this is the next pass over the mountains and the highest in New Zealand. Either by train or vehicle this is a great pass to see the wild countryside at it’s best.

Adventure:At Charleston prior to Westport are caves where you can experience underwater rafting and gold mining areas. Maybe travel up the Nile River Valley. Yes it is really called the Nile!!

Punakaiki Rocks:The Pancake Rocks are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts through several vertical blowholes during high tides. Together with the pancake-layering of the limestone, these form the main attraction of the area.

Kahurangi National Park:Further north along the west coast we come to this remote corner of the south island. One reason is the road finishes at this point and the only way it to walk through to Golden Bay. Many adventures are offered in the park including the Oparara Basin Arches and the natural limestone caves.

Queenstown:One of the most famous towns in New Zealand. A year around resort town, set among the magnificent and spectacular Southern Alps. The town itself sits on the 80 kilometre long Lake Wakatipu. There is so much to do in this region from all types of soft and hard adventure or maybe just relax and take in the surrounding mountains and lakes. To get a feel for the place take a gondola ride to the top of the mountain to take in the breathtaking views. Come down if you are up to it on a tandam skydive or have a ride downhill on the luge. The town itself is full of gift shops restaurants and pubs so at night the place is alive in both summer with walkers and winter for the skiers talking about the days fun. Jet boating is extremely popular with a number of companies offering different rides of different parts of rivers and lakes.

The historic boat the TSS Earnslaw was carried piece by piece and built and launched in 1912 and has plyed the lake ever since. It was a remarkable achievement. The whole area is also an old gold mining area and many tours will show you this fascinating part of the history. Nowadays the gold is the vineyards and Pinot wineries with the climate being ideal for what is now becoming very well sort after wine. We cannot mention this area without mentioning Bungy Jumping where it all began at the Kawarau Bridge.

Wanaka and Mountains:The mountains surrounding Queenstown are an attraction for people from around the world whether it is looking, trekking, biking or skiing. Place such as Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and over the top via Cardrona taking you to another alpine town of Wanaka and gateway to Triple Crown.

Arrowtown: The remnants of the bygone era of gold mining. In 1862 gold was found in the Arrow River and attracted more than 1000 miners, many coming from Australia in search of the rich pickings. The population rose to 7000 people. When the gold ran out the town was left almost as it is today with the building protected and preserved. A chinese community flourished and the history of this is also being preserved.Around the district lots of adventure, both soft and hard, wineries to sample the local Pinot Noir, championship golf courses, Film locations visits, great restaurants and pubs and nightlife.Skiing in winter is world class and walks or just exploring in other months of the year ensures a great time in this fabulous spot.

Southland:

Southlands main town is Invercargill the most southerly city in New Zealand. I personally love the grand old buildings you can see throughout the city. A couple of classic motoring museums and a motorcycle display are a must to visit as is a hardware shop E Hayes which is full of old vehicles and the motorbike from the ‘Worlds Fastest Indian’ See the film if you have not already. Well worth it!.

Southland encompasses Fiordland (following pages) and the Catlins which really shows what rural New Zealand is all about The area is set among forests, cliffs and waterfalls. Throughout Southland there are many fishing areas for a chance to get that brown or rainbow trout. A little known route is the Western route which takes you from Invercargill to Te Anau through the seaside town of Riverton.

Bluff:

Home of the famous ‘Bluff Oyster’ where you can sample these superb oysters at the Bluff Oyster and Food Festival held each year and visited by many people from around the world. Bluff is the oldest continued European settlement in New Zealand and is where the state highway begins from its furthest southerly point. The ferry to Stewart Island departs from here.. The maritime museum is a place well worth visiting and of course the famous signpost (shown on the opposite page). A visit to Bluff Hill is well worth the occasional windy blow to get a real panaramic view of the area.

If you are into photography there are real opportunities to get that true New Zealand local image.Diving with Great White Sharks is offered in these waters. (see diving section)

Stewart Island:

Stewart Island is the third largest island in New Zealand and lies around 30 kms at the bottom of the South Island. The island is certainly a getaway from the populous area and with a population of around 400 you will be made very welcome by the islanders. Bush walking is popular and with very good Flora and Fauna on the island is quite different for those wanting something a little different in New Zealand. The island is reached by ferry or air the ferry taking around an hour.

The Aurora Australis can often be seen this far south looking out from the mainland towards Stewart Island and beyond..

Pack Ya Bags can encompass all these places and things to do in this region, whether its for yourself or your group

The Deep South Stewart Island, and Bluff

Fiordlandincluding, Te Anau, Milford and Fiords

Fiordland:Most of Fiordland is dominated by the steep sides of the snow-capped Southern Alps, deep lakes, and it’s steep, glacier-carved and now ocean-flooded western valleys.Situated within Fiordland are Browne Falls and Sutherland Falls, which rank among the tallest waterfalls in the world, and New Zealand’s three deepest lakes, Lake Hauroko, Lake Manapouri, and Lake Te Anau.

Te Anau:Te Anau sits on lake Te Anua the gateway to Milford sound and the start for the Milford and Routeburn walking tracks. The lake is the largest lake on the South Island. The town is a great place for a base to explore the various fiords(sounds) in Fiordland. Good accommodations, cafes and restaurants. The town has the wonderful backdrop of the Luxmore and Murchison mountains, and the mountains fresh air!

Milford:Perhaps the most famous of all the fiords is the Milford Sound with it’s towering and majestic Mitre Peak which rises straight out of the water. Magnificent waterfalls such as the Stirling and Bowan create a backdrop to show the animals in the Fiord such as fur seals, penguins and dolphins. Boat trips are organised for a couple of hours along the sounds to observe nature at it’s best.

The Fiords are unique underwater as fresh water creates a layer above the salt water. This creates a situation where underneath this layer it almost copies deep water out in the ocean. This in turn allows deep sea fish and even black coral to grow. An underwater observatory is a good way to experience the underwater life in this world unique environment.

Diving: is available in both Milford and Doubtful Sounds. More in the diving section.

Kayaking:a 4 to 5 hour paddle is ideal at Milford, Doubtful Sounds, Te Anau Lake, Lake Manapouri, with its thirty five islands and sandy beaches. All these places will hopefully allow you get get up close to the seals and dolphins and maybe the odd penguin or two. This is a great relaxed way to explore. Seeing the sunset over the mountains is a sight to behold and well worth taking the time out to do so.

A few other suggestions:There are many ways to explore this region such as four wheeler motor bikes and guided 4WD trips and mountain biking.

Fishing:More than 40 rivers are within 90 minutes of Te Anau so no excuse for getting out there and landing a trout. A licence is required

Walking and Tramping Tracks

New Zealand has many hundreds of walking tracks to suit all levels of experience. These are just a few of the most famous only.

Milford Track:The Milford Track in Fiordland on the south island is one of the most famous walks in New Zealand, taking in mountains, temperate rain forest and alpine pass. The 53.5 km walk starts at the head of Lake Te Anau and finishes in Milford Sound. The walk must be completed in 4 days either as a freedom walk or a guided walk.

Routeburn Track:Another track in Fiordland overlapping 2 National Parks. At 32 Km. Much of the track spends time on the high ridges so spectaculay views are on offer.

Kepler Track:At 60 km long this track meanders through spectacular scenery throughout Fiordland.

Heaphy Track:This track is 78 km long so a good long walk It is a popular track situated in the North Westof the South Island leading into the spectaculer Golden Bay.

Abel Tasman Coast Track:This 60km coastal track is well sheltered, and with mild weather in all seasons, it is accessible and open throughout the year. and is fairly easy and gentle to walk and with lots of options for accommodation and such activities as kayaking. This is a very popular area in New Zealand for walking and kayaking.

There are many walks from just an hour to many days. Local tracks can be found in almost all areas in the country and all offer varying flora and fauna. Walks such as the Coromandel Walkway and the harder Sealy Tarns (taking in Mt Cook) are all available. Even walks on Waiheke Island!

Tongariro Alpine Crossing:This one day walk is perhaps the most famous and popular one day walks in New Zealand. Depending on the weather it can be straight forward or a little tough but certainly well well worth it. You need to be a moderatley fit. The walk is within a world heritage park. The crossing passes over the volcanic terrain of the multi-cratered active volcano Mount Tongariro, passing the eastern base of Mount Ngauruhoe which can optionally be climbed as a side trip. It is around 20km long.

Pack Ya Bags can organise your group or just yourself to walk this track. It is ideal for those team building days.

Combining cycling, kayaking and other sports and interests is the best way to get the best of your trip into the fascinating country of New Zealand.

44 45

Diving in New ZealandDiving in New Zealand is a different experience to many countries with a wide variety of unusual dive sites. Here are a few suggestions but please contact us for more information as we have been diving in these waters for a number of years.

Poor Knights:Rated as one of the premier dive locations in the world as the region is fed with converging warm water currents in a temperate climate which gives the diver access to more than 125 species of fish, soft corals, sponges anemones, kelp forests, rays fans to name just a few. Of volcanic origin, the diving offers spectacular drop offs, caves (largest sea cave in the world) and arches The area is a photographers paradise. Lying on the Tutukaka Coast it is around 3 hours north of Auckland

White Island:Well if you ever wanted to dive on an active volcano this is it! It’s impressive activity is well worth the effort to visit both on the island as well as under the water. Visibility is usually quiet good with lots of sea life within the warm vents around the island.

A few good wrecks:There are lots of wrecks around the coast but the 2 most famous are the Michhail Lermontov at the top of the south island and the ‘Tui’ of Tutukaka in the north island which was sunk to become an artificial wreck. The Lermontov was a cruise ship that hit rocks in the Marlborough Sounds and sunk. Care must be taken and only for confident divers. The Greenpeace ship the ‘Rainbow Warrior’ was sabotaged in 1985 and after was towed and sunk as an artificial reef

Fiordland:Diving in Fiordland is very unique and highly rewarding. Freshwater sits an top of sea water to create a darker atmosphere especially with the backdrops being mountains disappearing into the depths. This unusual geography allows many deeper water creatures and coral to grow such as black coral. On the dive you may see dolphins, sharks, eels octopus, stingrays among many others. You certainly could call this one of the final frontiers in diving.

Other Areas:There are many varied diving locations in New Zealand from the east coast of the south island including Kaikoura, Akaroa (Christchurch) and Dunedin. Great White shark diving is available from Bluff at the bottom of the south island.

I would like to acknowledge the image below and the wreck shot were gratefully supplied by Dive! Tutukaka. Tutukaka Coast. All other shots are from Pack Ya Bags staff.

Fun and food in New Zealand

50

New Zealand Cuisine:The country is very much a cosmopolitan country with a huge range of food to satisfy almost any pallet. We have a mix of people living here from almost every country on earth and with migrants comes the food. With this mix is the Maori people with their fabulous hungi food and other delicacies. New Zealand has food from all continents including Asia. Europe, South America, so when on tour you will be able to find something you really like and served with a friendly face.

Wine of New Zealand:Wines from New Zealand have become very popular not only in New Zealand but in countries around the world especially the white wines such as Marlborough and the popular Sauvignon Blancs, the Hawkes Bay with lovely blends of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrahs (Shiraz). Central Otago has now become the centre of growing for the Pinot Noir grape, Gisbourne for Chardonnay. Wairarapa and even original wines out of Auckland with some excellent wineries around the city within easy reach.

Lord of the Rings and Hobbit tours:New Zealand has become a sort after location for many films including the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Visiting such locations as Hobbiton, Mt Doom (Mt Ngauruhoe) Rohan (Mt Sunday). There are many locations throughout the country and a number can be visited or even a full 14 day tour to nearly all the sites including a visit to the Weta workshops in Wellington where all the visual effect are created and many of the props and wardrobe are kept. If you are a Tolkein fan its a must visit.

food tasting:Throughout the country food is important so many regions have their own food festivals. So if you happen to be in one of these regions they are well worth a visit. Many of them are in conjunction with wine and beer festivals but not all. Hokitika Wildfood, Bluff Oyster and Aucklands Sea-food festival are just three of the many avail-able. Then there are the various farms such as the salmon farms where you will get the freshest salmon to taste. A great way to stop for your snack.

Just a few other things to try:Bungy JumpingHang GlidingJet BoatingMountain BikingParaglidingQuad BikingRaftingSkydivingZiplining & ClimbingHorse RidingCyclingKayaking,

Unusual:New Zealand is famous for the new thrill and inventing fun. It was here the jet boat and bungy had itheir origins so it is no surprise that a thrill such as the semi-submersible shark has made an appearence. It is a one on one ride reaching speeds of 80kph then takes a dive under water to suddenly change directions to jump right out of the water like a shark actually does. See the photo above!! This is a real thrill ride and unique and invented in New Zealand. Try it out on a tour to the south island.
