September 27 2006 Dear Guests Kia ora – Welcome

This evening we welcome William (Bill) Boyd, and his wife Lorna, on their official visit to Washington DC as President of Rotary Interna-tional. As this is a gathering at which many Rotarians will be present it seemed in the spirit of Rotary to see if we could serve others by raising some funds for a cause on which Rotary has led the way. And it just so happens that Bill Boyd’s theme for his year as President is “Lead the Way”. Announcing this theme at Rotary’s International Assembly Bill Boyd said “this will be…an affirmation of my belief in the power of Ro-tarians to change the world, one positive act at a time”. Proceeds from tonight’s function will go to the Rotary Foundation’s campaign to eradicate polio; a campaign which is so very close to world-wide success. This is a campaign where Rotary has collaborated with many governments to both raise funds and to work to eradicate this terrible disease. Since Rotary began its PolioPlus programme there has been a 99% decline in the number of polio cases. Bill is an ordinary New Zealander who has achieved a great deal in Ro-tary. Before becoming President he was Treasurer of Rotary Interna-tional, prior to that he was Director, and before that he was District Governor. So it seemed appropriate this evening to also ask other “New Zealanders of achievement” if they would donate something to our si-lent auction. The response was overwhelming– as you will see from this catalogue. I hope this evening will enable you to meet Bill Boyd, a New Zealander of whom we are very proud. I also hope you enjoy sampling some of our food and wines and bid in the silent auction for a unique souvenir of the evening… Thank you for joining us

Nicola Donald is a contemporary artist based in Los Angeles . Initially trained as a teacher, Donald went on to study sculpture at Auckland University of Technology, followed by additional study at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work is inspired and informed by the most banal of activities; that of running and walking. Within the great ‘urban-ness’ of cities, the act of running and walking has led her to become distinctly aware of ‘landscape’. Not ‘landscape’ in its panoramic state, but rather as loaded with purpose, history, agenda. Her untraditional landscape paintings represent a few ordinary gestures of the urban surface. Donald has shown her work in numerous exhibitions in both New Zealand and the US , including in Los Angeles, Pasadena, and San Francisco . She has also been awarded a Jurors Award from the Berkeley Art Center , and a Graduate Merit Fellowship and Schmidt Fellowship, both from the San Francisco Art Institute.
