  • GCSE REFORMSFrom August 2017 English And Mathematics will bereported on a 1-9 scale.

From August 2018 all subjectswill be reported using theNew 1-9 scale.

The number scales do not have an exact equivalent on theold grade system.

For example a Grade 4 is equivalent to a High Grade D up to a Low Grade C.A Grade 5 is equivalent to aHigh Grade C up to a Low Grade B.

A good pass is now classed as aGrade 5.

  • NEWARK ACADEMY POINTS SYSTEM

  • TARGET SETTING

    • On entry to year 7 pupils are given an end of KS4 Aspirational target using Family Fisher Trust (FFT)data.

    • Family Fisher Trust (FFT) are an educational organisation that use data to predict GCSE grades based on results from KS2 SATs.

    • If a pupil does not have KS2 data a target is still given based on Teacher Assessments.

    • The difference between the KS2 starting point and the end of KS4 target allows a flight path to be generated for each pupil.

    • The flight path shows whether a pupil is above, on or belowtarget at each progress check.

    • Between year 7 and year 11 there are 15 progress checks in total.

  • PROGRESS CHECKS• We will be reporting pupils’ progress 3 times per year.

    • At each progress check we will provide information on

    • - Attitude to Learning score – How motivated pupils are in class. Scored between 1 and 4. 1 is for outstanding, 4 is for Inadequate.

    • - Homework score – Standard of homework. 1 is for outstanding, 4 is for inadequate.

    • - CAL – Current attainment level based on internal assessments. This will be using the Newark Academy points system which is line with the new GCSE’s.

    • Predicted Grade – Grade we believe a pupil will achieve at GCSE. Year 10 and 11 only.

    • Target Grade – A pupils minimum target grade for End of Year and End of KS4.

    • We will also be producing Flight Paths for each pupil.

  • PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT

‘Schools that have high levels of engagement with parents tend to experience better community support. Also, when children see a unified approach to their education between their parents and the school, they are more likely to understand the importance of their studies.’ DfE (Dept for Education) Research 2006

Children have two main educators in their lives – their parents and their teachers.

The school and the parents all have crucial roles to play and the impact is greater if parents and schools work in partnership.

  • FAMILIES FORUM

    • "I have really enjoyed attending the Parent Forum meetings this year. They are informal, friendly and a great place to ask questions and find out what is happening in school (sometimes before everyone else does!) As a group of parents we been have been involved in discussions about school issues and our opinions have been listened to and implemented. I have been a parent at this school for the past 8 years, but never have I felt so valued. The school is already an amazing place to learn and as parents we can help so much to make it even better.“ Andrea Duckmanton (mum to Mia in Year 11)

  • TORCH TARGET SYSTEMS

There is no national method for setting targets.

Schools are encouraged by the DFE and Ofsted to implement systems that work for them.

We have opted to use FFT as the basis for all of our targets as they have access to national data and provide challenging yet realistic

    targets

  • TORCH TARGET SYSTEMS

All targets are generated using the FFT aspire system (this has replaced the old FFT A/B/C/D).

FFT is a non-profit company established in 2001 with links to the Fischer Family Trust.

What do FFT do?FFT provides data and analysis to all schools and LAs in England and Wales. Their estimates are used by schools to inform the setting of ambitious and aspirational

targets for students. They analyse pupil results and pupil progress and provide school leaders with insightful data to support school improvement and self-evaluation.

They have been processing the National Pupil Database for the DFE since 2004 and providing analyses to all schools and LAs in England and Wales for 15 years.

    http://www.fft.org.uk/FFT/media/fft/Downloads/About_Fischer_Family_Trust.pdf

  • Torch Target System

    500 520

Targets are provided at different levels of challenge:

All FFT aspire targets are based on progress made by similar pupils nationally between KS2 and KS4. FFT use Prior Attainment, Gender and Month of Birth as a starting point for pupils to

    calculate targets.

At Newark Academy we will be using FFT50 to set the school target and FFT20 to set the student target.

  • TORCH TARGET SYSTEMS

Some subjects (more practical ones) that cannot use KS2 Maths and English data will have their target grades adjusted.

Typically this will be by 10 points or 1 whole level.

    1. Predicted grade (PG)

    2. Current Attainment Level (CAL)

    3. Attitudinal Score (AS)

    4. Homework Score (HWK)

  • TORCH TARGET SYSTEMS

The DAPA (Dynamic Analysis of Progress and Attainment) system has been developed to work with the Torch 0 – 90 system.

Data managers will be provided with a system to convert vocational grades and A* - G grades (for specifications still using

this system) to the 0 – 90 system.

DAPA groups pupils into 4 groups based on their progress so far to enable staff to identify pupils for intervention.

DAPA can be used for CALs or PGs.

  • DAPA

Pupils are grouped into the following 4 categories:

    Above: PG/CAL is above target

On Track: PG/CAL is equal to target

Below: PG/CAL is within 5 points of target

Concern: PG/CAL is more than 5 points from target

  • DAPA

    Examples:

Each Pupil has an end of KS4 target and the DAPA system calculates an Expected score for each Progress Check (using linear progress from KS2).

    Pupil A: CAL 39Expected 44Performance = -5Category = Below

    Pupil B: PG 51KS4 Target 59Performance = -8Category = Concern

  • INPUTTING DATA INTO DAPA

Staff will be provided with a DAPA file after each progress check; the same system will be used for KS3 and KS4.

Paperwork will be provided to go alongside the DAPA for staff to record intervention details for their group(s).

The graph shows the average attainment (CAL or PG) of each class for the chosen subject.

Options: The graph can be toggled between PG and CAL, max and min grades, department average and group targets can also be toggled on and off.

  • DAPA System

    Class Lists

Class Lists: These lists show the pupil information for the selected class or whole department. The information includes CAL, PG, Target grades, expected score, Progress score, performance category (Above, Below etc…) and class.

  • ACCURACY OF JUDGEMENTS

We have adopted a system based on FFT data that provides challenging, yet achievable, targets for our pupils.

The DAPA analysis system is built around these targets and the progress pupils are making towards them.

The performance against targets is included in the appraisal system but it is only a part of it, not a final judgement.

We have explained the methodology for calculating CALs which must be used consistently across departments.

  • ACCURACY OF JUDGEMENTS

Accurate staff data is fundamental for this system to work effectively.

This whole system of identifying underperforming pupils to implement intervention strategies becomes worthless if the data

    supplied by staff if inaccurate
