NEWARK VALLEY CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Summer 2019
Valley Views Students create a community garden to help fight hunger Students from Newark Valley’s agriculture program are working together with the Owego Rotary to create a community garden that will help feed the hungry.
The planting was led by the high school members of Future Farmers of America. These student leaders are coaching members of the Middle School Agriculture Club and assisted in the planting of various vegetables.
The students have been learning about planting and farming during their agriculture classes in school and now have the opportunity to get hands-on experience. The vegetables harvested from this garden will go to the local community food bank and also be used in the school cafeteria this fall.

Greg Asfoury named new principal at high school On May 28, the Newark Valley Board of Education appointed Gregory Asfoury to be the new principal of Newark Valley High School effective July 1, 2019. Asfoury comes to Newark Valley from Maine-Endwell High School, where he most recently served as the assistant principal.
One of approximately 30 applicants, he was the unanimous choice of both of our interview committees. He brings to our school a wealth of knowledge about
K-12 education, a deep commitment to student growth and a strong belief in service-leadership.
Asfoury has served the Maine-Endwell district for 22 years as both a teacher and administrator, but he has deep roots in the Newark Valley community: his mother and two grandparents all worked for the Newark Valley School District. Additionally, his wife, Theresa, currently teaches third grade at Nathan T. Hall.
Please join us in welcoming Greg to the Newark Valley family. We are thrilled to have him, and have every confidence that he will continue to build upon the great work being done on behalf of our students.

NV middle school receives Prevention Partner of the Year award The prevention staff of CASA-Trinity had the honor of working closely with Newark Valley Middle School this year.
The group completed the social emotional-learning curriculum, ‘Social Perspectives,’ in grades 4 through 6. Students in Nikki Morgan’s 7th grade health class received the ‘Too Good’ program and it went so well that the 5th grade teachers decided they wanted it too.
In all, Casa-Trinity Prevention taught 180 lessons to 260 students this year. They also held their first “Cafe’ Conversations” night with 4th and 5th grade families. The feedback was awesome and they plan to host more of these next year.
In addition, NVMS teacher Nikki Morgan received the “Prevention Rock Star” award for her key role in expanding prevention services in grades 4-7 and for her dedication to the health and well-being of all of the students in the middle school.

to do this, “so other kids don’t have what I have. Like not have a cure like the first time.”
Thirteen-year-old Brody Hines made seven have all donated.”
The group also worked at NVHS with Mr. Cicchetti’s 8th grade health classes. His classes also received the ‘Too Good’ program as well. Overall, CASA Trinity taught 50 lessons to more than 50 students at NVHS.
it his mission to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a not-for-profit orga-nization that raises funds to help find cures for children with cancer.
