FROM THE PRINCIPAL HOLIDAYS - READING & MATHS

We know that the holidays are a great time to relax and enjoy family time

outside of school life, however research shows that in just 2 weeks of not

reading, a student’s reading ability can see them drop 2 or 3 reading

if not used and reviewed. Playing maths games and using the language of

‘How did you know that?’ can be a great way to keep the mind ticking over.

We encourage families to share the responsibility and read with, to and around

their children over the holiday period. Reading for enjoyment at this time not

only keeps the reading skills up but is a great way to spend quality time with

CLASSES AND TEACHERS 2020

This year is the first year for a very long time that we farewell a number of teaching staff, whilst welcoming

new ones.

We congratulate Frazer Scanlon who has been appointed in a leadership capacity at Reidy Park

Primary School in Mount Gambier. Alex Bailey will follow Frazer to Mount Gambier after successfully

being appointed to a teacher role in that part of the green triangle. Stella Kidman also farewells the

school and will be heading north to Naracoorte. Congratulations to all these teachers on their

respective appointments and we wish you all the best.

We are very fortunate to secure an amazing teaching team for 2020, with teachers from Roxby Downs,

Adelaide and Mount Gambier joining us. For the first time we welcome a qualified special education

teacher who will support some of our students in a student support and intervention capacity. We also

welcome back Jessica Herrewyn who will work part time in the position of School Improvement

Coordinator.

Staff for 2020 has now been finalised. It is as follows:

R/1 – Hannah Dyson

Year 1/2 – Jenae Fox

Year 3/4 – Kasey David

Year 5/6 – Kaesea Jackson

Year 6/7 – Mark Elkins

Student Support / Intervention and HPE – Jaimee Hanton

Specialist Music / Arts – Sarah Fewster

School Improvement Co-ordinator – Jessica Herrewyn

All students have been placed in their classes for the 2020 school year. Students who are either in the

year 5/6 or 6/7 class will receive communication on whether Ms Jackson or Mr Elkins will be your

classroom teacher. Classroom locations for 2020 will remain as they have been for this year.

LAST DAY ASSEMBLY AND EARLY DISMISAL

Children are reminded to be in full school uniform on the last day. We will hold a short end of year

assembly at 2.10pm in the school gym where were will farewell our year 7s. An early dismissal will occur

at 2.20pm.

SCHOOL SECURITY

We are a ‘Learning Community’ and as part of the community we appreciate it if parents, family and

friends keep an eye out for any damage or suspicious behaviours over the holiday break. You are

encouraged to ring the police on 131 444 to report incidents.

SCHOOL TIMES

As a result of reviewing our teaching and learning times and aligning these times with current

department policy, our school finish time as for day 1 term 1 2020 will see classes conclude with our

school siren ringing at 3pm to communicate that students are being dismissed. This is a shift from our

current 3.20pm finish time. For those students who access school buses these have been adjusted to

reflect an early pick up of these students.

Kind Regards

Stuart Miller

Principal

Room 3 has been learning about chemical reactions

and how things mix together. A great example of this

was to make some bread from scratch proving that

science is FUN and we do it every day.

Students assisted in weighing out the ingredients (flour,

water, oil, starter and salt). The bread was mixed until it

formed a dough and then let rest, then it was stretched

(instead of kneading) at one hour intervals until the end

of the day. It was then left overnight.

On returning the following morning the dough was

ALIVE! It was then shaped and rested for another hour

then baked in a very hot oven for 1 hour, following this

was the taste test time!

As part of NPPS annual swimming lessons, students in foundation to year 2

travelled to Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre during week 5, followed by

students in grades 3 to 5 during week 6. The lessons were delivered by DFE

instructors and looking at the photos all students had a blast!

Library Books

Please have a look under beds, in closets and around the house for any

school library books. If you happen to find a book or a few please return

them to the school by the end of term.

Christmas Raffle Thank you to all families for their donations. We have received so much support. Raffle tickets are

still available for purchase and will be available to purchase at the door on the concert night. The

Raffle will be drawn on the 5th December during the school concert. This is one raffle you don’t

want to miss.

REMINDER - TIME TO RETURN SCHOOL READERS It’s that time of year again when we ask that all school readers be returned. Could you

please check your children bags, bedrooms, toy boxes, book shelves, the car and

couch and see if there are any books with the school barcode on them. Books need

to be returned by Tuesday week 9 (Dec 11th) Thank You.

Do you have some

time to share?

Each year we turn to our school community hoping

to find people that can give some time to listen to

students read. Mums, Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas,

older siblings or a neighbour are welcome to

volunteer.

Listening to a child read for ten minutes a day can

make a huge difference to their learning

outcomes.

Our Rocket Reading program runs Monday –

Wednesday mornings generally from 9-10am.

If you or someone you know would like to help a

small group of children, please contact the school,

and let us know which day/s would suit you for

2020

Lauren at the front office can take your details and

help you complete the forms required for

volunteers.
