Getting Your Mind Right to Start Affiliate Marketing

The affiliate marketing space is filled with offers, internet traffic sources, promotion techniques and an ever-increasing list of gurus who claim to know (and be able to teach you) the “next big thing” where you'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing with any success, these claims are laughable and far from the truth.

Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash flow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and the ability for a marketer to be a one person shop and make an incredible amount of money with low overhead.

The winners in this business are the ones with persistence when nothing works, who know there's plenty of money to be made and just keep at it, who can fail over and over and still build campaigns.

The cold hard reality is this: virtually everything in the space is changeable, what worked today can stop working tomorrow, you can (and will) get slapped, banned, kicked out, and generally screw up.

Most of these things happen suddenly and without warning, and they all contribute to the amazing learning experience available to anyone with a few hundred bucks and the ability to open an advertising account.

Your competitors are willing to work at this around the clock. This isn't a push button, instant business where you're likely to get rich overnight. Everyone I've ever met who has been successful at internet marketing has spent countless hours learning, trying new things, launching, tweaking, improving, trying something else, failing. There isn't any guaranteed recipe for success except this: persistence.

With that in mind, this guide will explore just one internet traffic source, PPV, and is set up to get you started building PPV campaigns right away from start to finish. With that said, time to jump in and get started building.

Things you need to get started:1.Web Hosting- preferably a VPS (virtual private server) or higher (e.g. Beyond Hosting, Hostgator)2.Affiliate account at a CPA Network (e.g. Ads4Dough, Neverblue)3.Account at a CPV/PPV traffic network (e.g. LeadImpact, Trafficvance, MediaTraffic)4.Tracking Setup to Track down to the keyword/url level (e.g. Prosper202 or CPVLab)

This guide describes from start to finish, how to get started in affiliate marketing by running traffic with PPV.

Basic Getting Started Definitions

Affiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main

types off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).

Cost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program, Comission Junction or Clickbank.

Cost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes buying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.

Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's account, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else related to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager right from the start can really help you.

PPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served in pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per view, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.

In order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact, MediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.

Don't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?

No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window themselves.

How many popups get served to the visitor?

The number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently (LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software downloaded and still making a profit.

Isn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?

No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.

Companies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games, toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so that they can continue to have access to the incentive.

How to Get Accepted into a CPA Network

In order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place to start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across different networks.

Once you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher) application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after receiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical part of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get you on the phone.

Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after you get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward.

You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over the phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:

What methods do you use to market offers?Do you already have a website you will be using? How much is your advertising budget? What other networks are you a member of?Who are your affiliate managers at these networks?Do you use social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to market offers? How much traffic can you drive?Do you have a personal recommendation from anyone who is already a member?

Once you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be persistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate for the network can be helpful.

To meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate Summit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network owners are members of the PPVPlaybook.com forum and WickedFire. Sometimes just getting to know people can open a lot of doors as far as networks are concerned.

After You Join a CPA Network

Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager and make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.

Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get

larger, they can really help you with your marketing efforts, scaling campaigns and getting payout bumps on offers. Lots of times it's easiest to communicate with your AM in real time over AIM versus email.

Set Up Web Hosting

Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said about internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with whoever else is on the same server as you.

Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3 seconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.

To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a house full of roommates (hosting customers).

In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will fit.

Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than the rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.

If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.

In the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space inside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.

A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more traffic, faster.

At the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.

Another good discussion of the difference seen by someone using shared vs vps hosting for PPV is here:

Hosting Providers for PPV

Beyond Hostinghttp://beyondhosting.net/

With BeyondHosting, your VPS can come preloaded with either Prosper202 or CPVLab (with payment receipt). The VPS's are specifically tuned so they can handle the amount of redirects needed when direct linking with PPV. Also, these guys provide great support.

Domain Names for PPV

Once you buy your hosting it's time to also buy a domain name and get it on your hosting. This is where you're going to host your tracking software and your landing pages if you decide to make them.

Oftentimes people wonder if they should have a specific domain name or a generic one. One generic, bland one is fine to start with, to host both your landing pages and tracking software. The .com, .net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a term or build a whole website.

After you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install tracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper tracking, it is impossible to know what is working and what isn't.

To do this, first set up either Prosper202 or CPV Lab on your hosting account. Setting up the software is beyond the scope of the guide, but both are pretty user friendly and have getting started guides.

CPV Labhttp://cpvlab.com/

CPVLab Help Videoshttp://ppvlab.com/oweiw/oiurw/vdm.htm

As far as which tracking software to choose, Prosper202 is open source, free and pretty much an industry standard.

Page 8: Newbie Guide PPVPlaybook.com Tracy Shaffer David Ford · Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager right from the start can really help you. PPV-means pay-per-view, and

CPV Lab is a paid option, but has a lot of functionality that Prosper202 lacks. You also benefit from good support if you have problems with your installation.

Tracking 202

Tracking 202 is the hosted version of Prosper202. You can create a free account and then build your campaigns using the Tracking202 internet-based interface which is similar to the Prosper202 user area.

If you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of your campaigns and through which all of your affiliate links are run- is at the mercy of the Tracking202 interface, and their hosting.

Also, your tracking software reveals the most critical part of your campaigns- the converting keywords and targets which you are bidding on. Leaving this up to chance in order to save money could potentially leave you open to huge risk if someone else caught on to what offer and keywords you were using.

Choose An Offer

Now, we're going to go to the CPA Network that we joined and look for an offer to send PPV traffic to.

Lesson on Offer Selection

http://www.ppvplaybook.com/forum/showthread.php?42-Lesson-Selecting-Offers

In that lesson, David explains how to choose an offer in Neverblue, and some criteria for doing so.

To explain this here, we're going to go through setting up a basic campaign in Ads4Dough using LeadImpact as the traffic source.

Now the best way to learn how to put all of this together is to just get started. For some variation in the guide, I'm going to grab a basic Walmart gift card email submit and build a simple direct linked campaign.

When you choose an offer, always make sure that it accepts PPV traffic, usually this is listed on the first page as contextual, downloadable software. This $1,000 Walmart gift card email submit offer says that all traffic is accepted.

First, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.

This is where I get my link for the offer, place my tracking pixel from Prosper202 or CPVLab, and can get creatives like banners or images specifically for the offer.

Before I do anything else, I'm going to place my tracking pixel from my tracking software so that I can track my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.

In Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:

Page 10: Newbie Guide PPVPlaybook.com Tracy Shaffer David Ford · Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager right from the start can really help you. PPV-means pay-per-view, and

In CPV Lab, your pixel is located under the screen where you input a new campaign, toward the bottom of the page:

Next, I have to cut and paste this pixel into my offer at Ads4Dough.

Click on the offer → pixels → Add a new pixel and this comes up:

Make sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL from your software into the box that says 'Enter URL of image to load'.

Once you do this, it should look like this:

Click 'Submit Pixel' and if it is entered correctly, you should now see a screen that looks like this:

Now your pixel is placed and you're ready to grab your link for the offer and build a campaign in either Prosper or CPVLab.

How to Build a Campaign in Prosper202

The first step is to get your link from Ads4Dough.

Click on Campaigns → The Offer → Links + Creatives → Links

Now, copy your link:

Now to build your campaign in Prosper202. Log into your Prosper202 installation.

Click → Tracking202 → Setup → #1 PPC Accounts

Add the PPV Network that you're going to be using as your traffic source for your campaign, for this campaign we're going to use LeadImpact.

Next, click on → #2 Add Affiliate Network

We're going to add the network where we copied out affiliate link for the campaign from, Ads4Dough.

Page 13: Newbie Guide PPVPlaybook.com Tracy Shaffer David Ford · Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager right from the start can really help you. PPV-means pay-per-view, and

Next, click on → #3 Aff Campaigns

Select the affiliate network, make a campaign name, paste in your affiliate link and the offer's payout. Click Add.

Now that we've got the campaign built, click --> #7 Get Links, and select the same criteria that you made you campaign with.

Your max CPC is what you're going to be bidding per view at LeadImpact. I usually set this at a rough estimate, about 20% over what I think I'll actually pay per view there, to account for tracking discrepancies.

Enter your traffic source, in this case, LeadImpact. Select Direct Link as your campaign type, and for Stats CPV, you're going to put the amount which you expect to pay per view so that CPVLab can track your statistics accurately. I usually make this number about 20% higher than I actually expect to pay per view, to account for discrepancies at LeadImpact.

Click on 'save campaign' and you're finished.

In order to pick targets for our campaign, we can bid on both keywords and urls. I usually start at the Google Keyword Tool and find targets that make sense based on the offer. In this case, I type in Walmart and get about 100 keywords related to Walmart. Then I sort them by global monthly searches and download them all. Next I choose the one with that is closest to start to make url targets.

Then I go to Google and type in my most high volume related keyword. From both the organic and paid results, I choose urls where I want my popup to show. Usually after this I go down the list of the keywords with the highest monthly searches, grabbing urls until I get to about 40 or so, however this varies with the campaign I'm building.

The more high traffic urls I have, the less of them I need, in order to get together enough traffic to test my campaign.

Check out David's step by step tutorial on campaign building to get more of a visual:http://www.ppvplaybook.com/forum/showthread.php?103-Lesson-Step-by-Step-Campaign

A note on scrapers. There are lots of tools available to increase the number of URL targets available for your campaign. These can be helpful and faster, however, in the beginning it's a good idea to try getting your targets the manual way to get a feel for gathering URLS and find out which ones are likely to yield you good results.

Should I bid on URLS or keywords?

You can bid on both. Some people choose to separate these into separate campaigns or don't use keywords, only URLS, but I've had good results dumping them all into the same campaign.

Troubleshooting Ahead of Time

Before you start running traffic to any offer, always double check to make sure that you've set up your tracking properly, set your tracking pixel at the CPA network, your CPA network link works, the offer is still valid and accepting traffic, and you've put the correct link in at the PPV network.

This type of double checking will save you from having your campaigns disapproved at the PPV network, running traffic to the wrong landers, blank pages, broken links and the wrong offers.

Campaign Setup Checklist:1.)Is my tracking pixel set up at the CPA network?2.)Is my offer still accepting traffic?3.)Does my offer accept ppv/display/downloadable software traffic?4.)Does my link work/go to the correct location?5.)Is my landing page (if I'm using one) uploaded to my server?6.)Do the links to my offer on the landing page work/go to the right place?7.)Does my URL have the keyword tracking token specific to the traffic source appended at the end of it?

Keyword Variables

In order for your tracking software to track your keywords, you must add the keyword token for the traffic source that you are using to the end of the URL that you receive from Prosper202 or CPVLab when you build your campaign at the PPV network you choose to run traffic with.

You should add these tokens to the end of the links you get from step #7 in Prosper202. If you use a different tracking program, check your program notes on how to pass that variable.

CPVLab should append your URL automatically based on the traffic source you chose while making your campaign.

An example of a link you might get from Prosper202:

Your URL after adding the keyword token for Trafficvance:

Trafficvance- {keyWord}

MediaTraffic- None, keywords are tracked automatically

Optimizing Your Campaign

Now that you've gotten your campaign built with targets, it's important to let the campaign run for a while to start to gather up some data.

Here's what to look for after gathering some data:

Troubleshooting/FAQ

Should I use a landing page or should I just direct link?

This is largely at matter of personal preference, and whether the offer is likely to convert by itself without a landing page. Some people use landing pages for every campaign and constantly build them, other people exclusively direct link, and only choose to build campaigns which will work with direct linking. Others use both, depending on what their plan is for the campaign.

Either way, you are allowed to to both with PPV as long as the user hits a page which complies with the standards of whichever PPV network you're using to run the traffic.

Another way to use direct linking is to test an offer in the beginning to figure out if it MIGHT work before you go to the trouble of building a landing page.

Also, you can split test direct linking with a landing page also, this is a good option if you aren't sure if the offer converts and/or needs a presell via a lander.

When should I kill a campaign?

The best explanation of this is in the forum written by David:

“What I like to do is spend 2-3x the offer payout (on the entire campaign) and if I see no conversions I will probably drop the offer.

Example

Say I am promoting this offer which pays out $2.50. I would let this run for about $7.50-$10 (yes a little more than 3x the payout since it is a low paying offer) and if I had no conversions I would switch offers. It gets too confusing to analyze every little detail like LP, targets, etc so keep it simple. What I see people doing is testing an offer like that, spending $10 and when they have no conversions they will change some targets and just let it keep running. In the beginning keep it much much simpler.

Example

Say I am promoting this offer with a $20 payout. Since this is a higher paying offer I am going to spend about $20 before cutting it off. If I had spend $20 without any conversions (and I thought my LP & targets were ok) I would kill it and move on.

Say I spent $20 and made 1 conversion....ok great I broke even so I raise my budget and spend $20 more. If I don't get any more conversions I would probably kill the offer. You see, this is where a lot of people bleed money. They get 1 conversion and then they let the campaign keep running and running just waiting for that next conversion.

You need to be seeing consistent conversions. Like I said earlier, you don't need to be profitable but you do need to be seeing conversions coming regularly. Just because you get 1 conversion on a offer it doesn't mean you should let your campaign keep running and running.

So I want everyone to start testing faster and smaller. Cut your losses early. Spend 1-3x the offer payout and if you don't see any conversions move on.”

Keep in mind however, that if you spend 3x the payout but all the traffic went to one target, that isn't a very good test of an offer. That particular target just might not convert.

Also, there is not really an exact rule or formula to follow for killing your campaign. Over time, it gets more intuitive and easier to manage. It's just important to make sure that you kill losers quickly so that you can make room for better grossing campaigns.

My campaign shows conversions but why can't I see the data in prosper202 or CPVlab?

The most common reason for this problem is that your tracking pixel/postback url is placed incorrectly at the CPA network (or isn't there at all). To fix this, try logging into your CPA network, going to your offer checking on the pixel, and re-uploading it.

If this is a problem or you aren't sure how to place a pixel at your particular CPA network, contact your affiliate manager for guidance.

Also, keep in mind that sometimes tracking pixels just don't fire correctly. It's always a good idea to pay attention to your actual earnings per click (EPC) for a campaign based on your actual traffic numbers from the PPV Network and conversions at the CPA network to see if you're still making a profit on your campaign.

The other reason that you might not be able to see your keywords tracked in Prosper202 or CPVLab is that the url isn't appended with the keyword token or the 'pass keyword' button is not checked.

If you use CPVLab, you can combat this problem by making sure that CPVLab appends the offer's url with a coded sub-id which you can then upload to CPVlab to even out your stats.

How to do this can be found here in the help videos for CPVLab:

When/How Should I Split Test?

Split testing is inherently a good idea but it can get very complicated quickly. Things you can try split testing:

1.)Offers2.)Landing Pages3.)Direct Linking vs Landing Page4.)Headlines on Landing Pages5.)Other landing page elements

The best thing to do is to start out simply with only a few very different variations of whatever it is you want to test. Lots of people get too caught up in split testing many very small elements, but don't ever get out of the testing phase or get profitable.

This is because the more variables you are testing at one time, the more information you need to determine if the test is statistically relevant. Keep it simple at first. Aim to find a lander or offer that is actually profitable in the beginning, then refine your conversion rate with more testing.

Should I build an email list? When/why is building an email list a good idea?

The basic premise behind building an email list is that after you have gotten someone's email address, you can then email a series of offers after your initial contact with them at the point of the popup. It can also be an effective method to collect email addresses using a squeeze page with a freebie like a free report, and then send the visitor to an offer at the end of the process.

This way you cover some of your costs for building the list through the conversions on the back end, and build yourself an asset which you can keep mailing to over and over.

Another way to monetize email addresses is by selling them to a co-reg company which will then pay you per email address and take responsibility for emailing the list.

How Can I See the Ads Myself?

Each traffic network corresponds with one or more toolbars that are installed on the user's computer. You can download the toolbars onto your own machine, and it's best if you use an old computer or one that isn't your every day machine because they can really slow things down.

How do I view ads from other countries?

A great option is https://www.overplay.net/.

Why do some offers accept PPV traffic and some don't?

Lots of advertisers don't understand PPV traffic and have a poor view of it. Sometimes they don't want direct linked PPV traffic because it can mess with the network's EPC statistics, or the advertiser can be paying per hit.

PPV traffic can come in large volume, and with direct linking, the conversion rate is usually relatively low, so this can end up costing the advertiser a lot of money in the end if they are paying the CPA network per click for the traffic.

If you don't follow the rules on the traffic sources allowed for an offer, you risk getting kicked off the offer and forfeiting your commissions, also possibly getting kicked out of your CPA network. There are tons of offers out there, but fewer good CPA networks.
