The company team is comprised ofoperators with more than 30 years ofcombined experience. Capable of run-ning the more than 300 tons of avail-able equipment, Ouellette’s crewdemonstrates an expertise that willensure your job is completed in a time-ly and professional manner.

“The diversity of our equipmentenables us to take on virtually any proj-ect — from simple grading to breakingup mountains of ledge,” said Ouellette.“Our equipment is well maintained byour in-house mechanical team.”

The company’s past projects havebeen both commercial and residential.

“We have worked extensively onsite development for commercial proj-ects, including foundations, water, sewer and drainage. Our residential work includes creatinglarge subdivisions and working with homeowners on small-er projects,” he added. “We also can design and install yourseptic system from start to finish in Rhode Island or Mass.”

A O Construction Co. also is a licensed Orenco AdvantexBottomless sand filter installer.

The Son Also RisesA small firm, with only three employees, the self-taught

father is now the proud teacher of the next generation tocome aboard — son Michael.

“We put out a tremendous amount of work for only threepeople,” said Ouellette. “We’re a small company, but my sonMike, a chip off the old block, has become a big part of thebusiness. He dug his first trench for me when he was eightyears old. Others have come and gone over the years. I’d belost without my son.

“This business will be his when I retire. He’s now 23 and,

at 23, he’s had his CDL license and Massachusetts andRhode Island hydraulics licenses for years,” he added, con-firming that the next man in the Ouellette family is as muchof a go-getter as his father was while still a teen.

Besides complete excavation, site and septic work, A Ohas added some new wrinkles to their services.

“We recently added a chipper for when trees are in theway. It saves time and money to keep this in-house. We stillsub out large tree jobs. This is just for convenience on certainjobs. We also added a gravel screener,” said Ouellette.

A O consistently gets jobs in two states, as some of itsrecently-finished job projects confirm:

• Completed site work for the Russell’s Mills Fire Stationin Dartmouth, Mass., for Coletta Contracting.

• Completed site work for the Bigelow Day Care conver-sion in Somerville, Mass.

• Completed site work for the John Quincy MedicalCenter in Taunton, Mass., for Nadeau Corporation.

• Completed site work for the Wickford Package Store inWickford, R.I., for Cobalt Construction.

• Completed site work for the addition to AttleboroEnterprises in North Attleboro, Mass., for NadeauCorporation.

• Completed demolition and site work for the new pool atAbbot Run Valley Swim Club.

• Completed site work for Phase 1 (last year) and Phase 2(this year) on the Rustoleum building in Attleboro, Mass., toupgrade the industrial production rooms for NadeauCorporation.

• Completed exterior site work for the Salvation Armybuilding in Woonsocket, R.I., in order to bring in a new fireline to upgrade the building to install a sprinkler system forCobalt Construction.

• Completed site work to upgrade the electrical service atthe Honeywell building in Woonsocket, R.I., for CobaltConstruction.

• Numerous residential jobs in between all these commer-cial projects, such as septic systems, foundations, water lines, etc.

record. “Safety is very important. We try to always recognize

Centuries-Old Buried Live Oak Put to Use in Athol, Mass.By George BarnesTELEGRAM & GAZETTE

ATHOL, Mass. (AP) If wood could talk, the old beams in Thomas Mann’s lumber yardwould sound like a chatty ship’s bosun. They are gnarly, tough and interesting. “They are nearly bulletproof,” Mann said. Mann, owner of Mann Lumber Co., has a

big pile of dark-colored beams in his yard thatare unlike other salvaged materials he hascollected for resale. First of all, these beamsare not his. They belong to PartnersHealthCare, the parent company of SpauldingRehabilitation Hospital. The beams are special in part because they

are probably at least 300 years old and wereburied in the former Charlestown Naval Yardbefore the Civil War, possibly to preservethem for use in repairing sailing vessels. Theywere discovered when the company startedconstruction on a new SpauldingRehabilitation Hospital on one of the parcelsat the former naval yard. Mann has had the timbers for two years,

waiting for Partners HealthCare to decidewhat to do with them. “When they went to build a new waterfront

hospital, they discovered lots and lots of themburied in the former naval yard,” he said. Once the company figured out that the

large logs were for building and repairing old

sailing vessels, the company gave three-quar-ters of them to Mystic Seaport: The Museumof America and the Sea, which is in the mid-dle of restoring the world’s last survivingwooden whaling vessel, the Charles W.Morgan. The vessel is undergoing a $10 mil-lion restoration. The timbers, which are inremarkably good condition, considering theyhave been buried since the mid-1800s, are thesame type of wood used to build the Morganin 1841. “The hospital kept 25 percent of the wood

so it could be put to some reuse,” Mann said. Finding the eventual reuse involved two

years of the hospital building project’s archi-tects accepting and rejecting designs thatwould not work in some way with the overalldesign or would be a problem to create out ofthe wood. Mann said the wood is live oak, anevergreen oak found in the south. For wood-en ships the wood was much sought after, because the unusual grain makes the woodextremely hard. “It also grows curved, which makes it good

for ship building,” Mann said. The wood was a bonanza for the ship

museum, which had taken to reclaiming liveoaks that had fallen for some reason, includ-ing many trees that were blown down byHurricane Katrina in 2005. Mann’s yard is filled with wood and other

building materials he has purchased that he

will either rework and sell or resell outright, including a 40-ft. (12 m) beam from an oldmill in Merrimac he said may be close to 400years old. He does not own the CharlestownNaval Yard wood. “I am only its steward for a while,” he said,

although the wood has been in his yard onPetersham Road in Athol for two years. Mann came into possession of the wood

after he bought a new sawmill. Anothersawmill owner had the responsibility of usingthe old wood, but he was retiring. After anextensive vetting process, Mann said it wasdecided he had the knowledge and equipmentto properly work with the wood. His familyhas been in the wood business for three gen-erations. When the wood was discovered, Mann

said, the owners immediately grasped theimportance of what they found. He said thelive oak beams are pieces of seafaring histo-ry. When ships were built, he said shipyardsoften kept duplicate pieces of wood to repairany damage. The pieces of wood are all num-bered as if they were part of an inventory theNavy was keeping before the era of woodenships ended. Partners HealthCare chose not tojust sell it off, giving about 140 pieces toMystic and keeping the rest to do somethingto honor the wood and its history. “They knew they had to do something with

it,” he said.

The ideas included making furniture foroffices for the hospital, or installing it in someway into the design of the building. For twoyears, designs were put forward that were justnot what the hospital wanted. “They kept trying to come up with designs

instead of letting the wood decide what itwants to have done,” Mann said. On the last day of the year, they contacted

him and told him they had a plan for some ofthe wood. Within days he was working on hisfirst commission, to make a two-piece benchthat will be installed in a public area betweenthe hospital and the waterfront. The piece heis working on first is a few feet thick with abeautiful curve to it. He has been working todry it out and smooth it off enough so it willbe comfortable for public use. He said it willnot be sanded down much because the own-ers want the character of the wood to beretained as much as possible. The secondpiece of the bench is on a flatbed truck. Mannsaid he plans to load it into his wood shop andwork on it side-by-side with the other piece. The bench will be substantial. A second

single-piece bench also is being made. Therest of the wood, a few dozen large pieces, including one that is about 31 sq. in. (200 sqcm), are still being looked at by the architects. And eventually, Mann said the wood will letthem know what it should become.

He sounds like a relative talking aboutpreserving a family heirloom. That’s how Tom Bigelow describes

Bigelow & Fleming’s involvement inthe restoration of the iconic Standard-Times Building, erected in 1894 indowntown New Bedford, Mass. “We’re really proud and excited to be

part of the team on this unique project,”he said. Bigelow is a founding principalof the company.Bigelow & Fleming based in Easton,

Mass., and celebrating its 10th anniver-sary, expects to hand over the shell to theowner/developer around the end ofJanuary — on time and on budget. He said B & F was chosen by proper-

ty owner The Columbus Group ofBoston for the initial $2.5 million prepa-ration phase of the historic renovationbased on his firm’s track record. B & Fhas managed construction projects forsuch blue-ribbon clients as Gillette,Bristol-Myers Squibb, and BabsonCollege and Brandeis University, toname a few. “In addition to new construction,

we’ve built a reputation for breathingnew life into old buildings,” Bigelowsaid. The property, at 555 Pleasant St.,

opposite the public library, has beenvacant since the Standard-Times news-paper moved to modern offices in 1995.The structure, designed by architectsPeabody and Stearns, is in the CentralNew Bedford Historic District. Joining Bigelow & Fleming on the

renovation team are historic preservationconsultants MacRostie Historic AdvisorsLLC of Washington, D.C., who havebeen working with the National ParkService to ensure fulfillment of federaltax credit requirements, and the Bostonfirm of Steffian Bradley Architects whodesigned the renovation. “Our team’s assignment in the $6 mil-

lion adaptive reuse project was to gut thefive-story, 34,000 square-foot buildingto prepare it for build-outs that will ulti-mately house offices on floors 2 to 5 anda restaurant on the street level,” saidBigelow. Among his key team members are

Project Manager and Licensed StructuralEngineer Mike Farrer, and ProjectSupervisor, John Arruda. Local tradespeople have been employed for thework.“Removing everything down to the

bricks and beams in a 19th century struc-ture — without affecting the shell —takes a highly skilled team,” saidBigelow. “We’re right on schedule, preparing to turn over the shell to the

owner in early 2013.”The work included several complex

components:• Installation of a new elevator in the

old air shaft• Allow access and emergency egress

for residents of the adjacent condosthroughout this entire initial constructionphase (occupied space renovation is a B& F specialty)• Installation of new energy-efficient

windows had to meet requirements ofthe Historical Commission• Installation of new mechanical sys-

tems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing andbathrooms) on every floorBigelow & Fleming’s renovation and

ground-up construction work is primari-ly in southern New England and fallsinto these categories: biotechnology, education, corporate, healthcare and spe-cialty construction. “We’re excited about the critical part

we’re playing to bring back the oldStandard-Times Building and restorenew life to this part of downtown NewBedford,” said Bigelow. “Our watch-word is close collaboration, teamworkand communication. That combinationbrings our projects together seamlesslyand without surprises.”For more information, call 617/224-

Economy Moved CompanyInto Commercial Projectswhen a situation can becomedangerous and take steps to pro-tect our workers and the public,”said Ouellette.Job after job, his little firm,

has gained a fine reputation. “Service, fair price and good

work means we have manyrepeat customers and we havegreat references,” he added.Ouellette can never be

accused of living in a glasshouse, but he’s worked on a few,and found even more unexpect-ed glass in and around thegrounds of older properties. After all, you never know whatyou might find undisturbed a couple feetunder the earth’s surface.“I do have an extensive bottle collection

mostly from installing septic systems onolder homes,” he laughed. But other things can shatter besides bottles

and Ouellette has been up to any unexpectedchallenge.“One very challenging sewer connection I

did was the complete design and installationof about 800 feet of sewer line with variousmanholes in the Lincoln Industrial Complexin Lincoln, R.I.,” he said. “We had to do avertical tap on a 24-inch main NBC sewertrunk line, four-feet into the water table. Weused special vanguard shoring and kept thehole dry with a Vac truck. I have great pic-tures of this job.”Never one to let any equipment rust,

Ouellette said his most interesting projectinvolved Rustoleum.“Yes, the Rustoleum project in Attleboro,

Mass. We had no idea what we were gettinginto with the unknown conditions of subsur-face demolition to accommodate new foot-ings for the new processing vats,” he sighed.“The existing piers went down over four feetand were reinforced with rebar, but all had tocome up for the new configuration.“We did it during the summer (factory)

shutdown and it was hot and humid. It wasquite a challenge to bring the project in ontime working double shifts for NadeauCorporation,” added Ouellette.Like most contractors, A O has had to

adapt to challenging economic timesthrough competitive pricing and great per-formance, as well as one major modifica-tion. “I made the leap from residential to com-

mercial when the economy tanked in 2006. Ihave a great office. My monitor is 42 inchesand I have a separate digitizing station for

cuts and fills and takeoffs,” said Ouellette. “Ieven have a 42-inch color printer, as I wasspending a fortune in print reproduction. Iowe my good leads to ‘The Blue Book’ and‘Bidclerk.’ I have developed most of mycommercial connections through theseleads.

Newest ProjectIn September, A O began work on an

important project, the new septic system forthe New England Institute of Technology’sgolf course in East Greenwich, R.I.“We’re teaming up with Rick Pezza from

Green Wastewater Solutions out ofWarwick, R.I.,” he said. “I’ll do all the exca-vation and leach field construction, ledgeremoval, asphalt patching and landscaping, and Rick will handle all the tanks andpumps.”Beyond sand traps on the course, a couple

of challenges have already presented them-selves. “Where the tanks are installed is a steep

slope with ledge outcroppings,” saidOuellette. “We’ll most likely have to ham-mer out the ledge to install the tanks.”But in all work challenges, Ouellette

acknowledges the companies he’s workedclosely with.“I have developed great relationships with

several great companies: — NadeauCorporation, Cobalt Construction, ColettaContracting, Rick Pezza of GreenWastewater Solutions and SeaverConstruction,” said Ouellette. “I mean, weare all in this together.”For more information, visit www.aocon-
