As the Centre is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Service(AALS)weareregulatedandapprovedto deliver all our activities under ourcurrentriskassessments,staffingratiosandqualifications.

For all delivery staff associatedwith Newgale YMCA OEC these regulations would ensure safeoperatingproceduresareinplaceas well as the appropriateness of their qualifications and therisk assessments, both staticand dynamic, that are carriedout. Newgale YMCA also has membership of the Associationof Heads Of Outdoor EducationCentres (AHOEC) (WhereDeniseMarriott is an accreditedpractitioner for the Institutefor Outdoor Learning (IOL)and a Course Provider for theOEAP), and The PembrokeshireOutdoor Charter Group. The Centre is currently working towards the “Learning Outside The Classroom” Quality Badge (LOtC)” and regulated by theAdventurous Activities LicensingService(AALS).

Qualified to deliver activities across the fullspectrum,aswellasbeinganAccreditedPractitionerandMentor for the IOL, she is nowon looking for new andinnovative ways to take Newgale YMCA OEC forwards,whilstmaintaininganexcellentreputation.

Nick Clark: YOPS Activities Officer ◄Nickhasworkedwithsomeofthecountiesmosttroubledyoungpeople,oftenwhenallotheragencieshaveeithergivenuphopeorareunabletocopewiththeparticularbehaviours that these young people exhibit. Nick’sprofessionalism alongside his belief in young people’s ability to turn their life around means he gets results whereothershavetriedandfailed.

► Gaynor Williams: Programme CoordinatorSince joining the team in Spring 2010, alongside Tom,hasusedherwealthofexperiencefromactivitycentres,corporate development and the hospitality industry tospearhead a number of projects aimed at helping ethnic minoritiesinourcounty.Shehastravelledextensivelyallover theworld andwhen time permits loves to be outwalking her dog and riding horses.

► John Garland: Facilities SupervisorJohnhasworkedand livedat theYMCAsince2009andenjoyedthevarietyofpeoplewhohavestayedwithus.Heisresponsibleforallofthegroundsworkandoverseesthekitchendutieswhengroupsarein.PriortoworkingattheYMCA,heworkedinthementalhealthfieldasanassistantmanager.

Krista James ◄Sales, Marketing and Fundraising Manager

Krista joined the Newgale YMCA OEC team in 2009 as the MarketingManager.TodayKrista’sresponsibilitiescoverourIncomeGenerationintheformsofFundraisingandSalesaswellasNewProjectDevelopment.Shehasastrongpassionfor designing new projects that support the community and provingnewopportunitiestosupportyoungpeople.

Nicky Garland: Hospitality Supervisor ◄Nicky joined the Newgale team in 2011. She is responsible forbringingyougreattastingfoodandawarmcosyplacetorelaxandunwindafterallyouractivities.Overthepastyear and verybusy season,Nicky received100%positivefeedbackforallofherhardworkandcustomerservice.

The Whitehouse is the nervecentre of our operations hereat Newgale YMCA, servingas our office spaces, trainingroom, welcome area for guestsand includes one discreet twin bedroom located at the rear upstairs of the building.

Through locally sourced foods and fulfilling any ethnic, religous or dietaryneeds,wehopetoinfluenceyoungpeople’sattitudestowardshealthyeating,especiallywithits’connectiontotheoutdoors,asperourethos. Our freshly cooked meals and seasonal spreads make the most of our county’slocalproduceandourhomegrownveg(aprojectcalledtheYGarden).

With meals being carefully prepared by our trained staff, they contain thenecessarycarbohydrates,sugars,salts,fats,oilsandmineralsneedtomaintainoptimalbodilyfunctionsandprovideenergyforgettingphysicalduringactivities.

Coasteering is a combination of low level scrambles and high plunges.Accessedonmanylevelswithbreathtakingjumpsintodeeppoolsforadrenalinjunkiesandsomesmaller,intermediatejumpstobuilduptohighlevelchallenges.

Weare situated on the Sustrans ‘Celtic Trail’ cycle routewhichwinds itswaythrough the picturesque landscape of the Pembrokeshire CoastNational Parkideal forexplorationbybicycle.The lanesarequietandthetraffic is light.Wehaveawiderangeandsizeofuptodatemountainbikes.ForthosewantingamorechallengingexperiencethenearbyPreselihillsgivesexcellentcrosscountryridingandwearealsoinstrikingdistanceofsomeofthebestbuilttrailsinthecountryatBrechfa,NantyArianandCwmCarn.

Providesawide rangeofwaterbasedexperiences, fromseeing the incrediblerockformations,spotporpoiseandseabirds,tosealpupsandspectacularsunsetsoverRamsayIsland. Easytomanoeuvre,stableandcomfortableKayaks,whichweusefortastersessions and short journeys along the coast. SessionstakeplaceatexcitingbutuserfriendlyvenuesofWolfRockandStDavidsHeadbutmorechallengingvenuescanbeused forsmallergroupswantingtoimprovetheirskillsandtechnicalcompetences.

AlongsidethemenuofinterpersonalchallengeswehaveaHighChallengeCourse,deliberatelydesignedtoofferaspectrumofindividualandteamchallengesthatwillprovideapowerfulandmulti-facetedexperience toallgroups thatuse it.Teamwork,trustandachievingpersonalgoalsisatthecoreofthisHighChallengeexperience.Weusemanyelements to recognise theachievements individualsmake on one of our programmes.

Whether you spend a morning climbing and abseiling from atowerorbuildinga10mhighmilkcratestackwhilststandingonthem,wecanguaranteeapowerfulexperienceyouwillnotforget!

Thebreath-takingsurroundingsofthePembrokeshireCoastNationalParkisanideallocationfortheBushcraftProgramme.Gainingadeeperunderstandingof,andrespectfor,avarietyofnaturalenvironments,it’sruggedcoastlines,copiouswoodlandsandwealthof faunaandflora,provideaperfect resource to learnaboutsurvivingintheoutdoors.Itisalsoacoursewhichwillhelpparticipantsdevelop their Team-Working,Communication, andRiskManagement Skills, aswellasbuildingselfrelianceandconfidence.

The process of developing new skills and achieving success is a fundamentalprincipleinthedeliveryofpowerfuloutdoorlearning.Webelievethattherealconsequencesoflearningandtheexplorationofdifferentlearningstylescangiveour course members a useful insight into how they learn and how to set goals. Usedmetaphoricallythisexperiencehasdirectrelevancetotheformallearningenvironmentofschool,college,universityorworkplace. 25

This week takes the young people on a journey of discovery looking at theenvironmentaroundthemandsomeofthewaystheycanbeinvolvedincaringfor it. Whilst going out in the great outdoors they will learn about the sea shore and itsmany inhabitantsalongwith thebird lifeandflorawhich isabundanthereintheUK’sonlyCoastalNationalPark. TyingintothecurriculumforGeography,Sciences,PhysicalEducationandPersonalSocialEducation, studentswill leavenot justhavinghadanamazingexperiencebutalsowithanincreasedknowledgeaboutthenaturalworldplustheachievementoftheJohnMuirDiscoveryAward.

OurrangeofOutdoorProgrammesareperfectlydesignedforbothschoolgroups& youth groups (uniformed groups, NHS, youth clubs, young carers) with aparticularemphasisonpersonaldevelopment. We specialise in delivering residential programmeswhich are ‘OutcomeLed’whilststillbeing funandadventurous forall involved.Whetheryouwantoneofourpre-designedcoursesorhavespecificneedsrelevanttoyourgrouptofitintoawiderprogrammeofwork,wehavetheexperienceandprofessionalismto make it happen.

Outdoor Learning CardsAsatrainingstandardweutilisetheOutdoorEducationAdvisor’sPanel’s(OEAP)OutdoorLearningCard resources. The emphasis being, to become a competentleader of outdoor activitieswithin the workplace.

This type of programme would enable Learning Support Assisstants(LSAs),Teachers,andYouth Leaders to lead or assist in outdooractivities.

The Outdoor Learning Cards activities contribute directly toawiderangeofeducationalanddevelopment aims for youngpeopleandcoverfourelementsof Outdoor Learning that can be delivered on a school/youth club site and surrounding environment:

This course does what it says on the tin. Throughout the programme thegroup will look at the theory of comfort zones and personal challenge as well as support and encouragement from within a team. Eachindividualwillbegiventheopportunitytoachievesuccessandtorecognisetheskillstheyalreadyhaveas well as learn new things. Everyparticipantwill leavetheprogrammewith a certificate to celebrate theirmanyachievementsandwithagreatersense of self worth.30

This unique programme focusesonbehaviouralchoicesusingthebasis of ‘Reality Therapy’ and‘Choice Theory’. This course isrelevant to young people whowanttomakepositivechangesintheirlivesyetlacktheconfidenceand the tools to make those changes happen. The course will begin by challenging existing behaviourand looking to the reasons behind it along with the consequencesit brings. Young people will then work towards building a toolboxforthefutureempoweringthemselveswithdifferentchoicesandtheunderstandingthattheyareincontrol.Finallythecoursewillendwithanactionplanning session tobecontinuedwith the supportof youthor socialworkersbackintheirhomeenvironment.

Learning towork as an effective teammember can help you build your self-confidence,developyourtrustinothersandenhanceyourcommunicationskills. Thecentralaimofthisprogrammeistoequiptheparticipantswiththeskillsandconfidencenecessarytobeabletoworkeffectivelyinanyteamsetting.Itwill give participants the chance to explore and experimentwith tools andtechniques, throughavarietyofoutdooractivitiesandunder theguidanceofexperienced development tutors. BushcraftThe Bushcraft Programmeis an exciting way to gain adeeper understanding of, andrespectfor,avarietyofnaturalenvironments. And wherebetter to do this than in thebreath-taking surroundings of the Pembrokeshire CoastNational Park. Its ruggedcoastlines, copious woodlandsandwealth of fauna and floraprovide a perfect locationto learn about survivingin the outdoors. To really appreciate the beauty of the Pembrokeshire area you havetocomeandvisit.

This course includes sessionsonnavigation, Foraging,Campcraft cookingandRiverskills.Itisamalleablecoursethatcanbetailoredtoindividualgroupsandages and their needs. However this Bushcraft course is not just about learning about theenvironment.ItisalsoacoursewhichwillhelpparticipantsdeveloptheirTeam-Working,Communication,andRiskManagementSkills,aswellasbuildingselfreliance and confidence. Therefore participants will gain skills that could beessentialtoreachingtheirfullpotentialinallareasoftheirlives. There is also the opportunity for participants to have their learningexperience turned into accredited learning, gaining a certificate inWoodlandSurvivalSkillsfromOCN. Theprogrammecantakeplace intensivelyover thecourseofaweekorspreadover6weeks.

Everybodyshouldlearnfirstaid.However if you are involved inoutdoor activities and sportsthis is a particularly essentialcourse for you. In this coursestudents will work towards a 16hr “Emergency” First Aid certificate. This award is certificatedthrough Remote Emergency Care. The award supersedes the ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’qualification and is recognisedbyallNationalGoverningBodiesforoutdoorsportsandactivities.Thecoursewill centre on scenario-based learning, including dealing with bone injuries,administeringCPR,andcopingwithbleeding. Ifstudentsdonotmeettherequiredhoursoflearningtheymaybeeligibletoreceivethecertificatein“Basic”firstaid,ensuringallstudentsonthiscoursereceivearecognisedqualification-aswellasvitalskillsthatcouldhelpyousavea life.

Haveyoueverimaginedwhatitwouldbeliketoexplorethecoastlineortheriverfromacompletelydifferentangle?LearninghowtoCanoeandKayakcouldbeawayofopeningupawholenewworldforyou–aswellashelpingyoudevelopyourskillsandconfidenceinthewater.TheBCUStarAwardsarenationallyrecognisedcanoesportcompetencyawards.TheIntroductoryAwardsshowthattheholderhastheskillsandknowledgetopaddlesafelyinshelteredwaterenvironments(inboth Canoe and Kayak).

GainingtheseAwardswouldbeapersonalachievement–butitcouldalsobeastepuptodevelopinganexcitingnewcareerintheoutdoorindustry.BCU1and2StarAwardswouldgiveyouagoodgroundingtoattainthe3StarAward,givingyoupersonalcompetencyrequiredforentryontotheCoachingSchemewhichwouldenableyoutoworkasaCanoeandKayakInstructor.

This programme allows the young people to understand what is on their door steps;whetheritisintheirgardens,hedgerows,seaorcoastalpath,thesethingsaretheplatformstogatheringfoodandbeingactive. By working with young people in this way we are able to address many issuessuchasselfconfidence,riskassessment,communicationskillsandteambuilding. What activities do you run?We offer Mountain Biking; Coasteering; Surfing; Kayaking;Canoeing; High Ropes Course, and Climbing Wall; TeamChallenges;RockClimbing,Abseiling,Bushcraft,Hikingandover-night Camping.

How old must you be to take part?We generally accept children from 8 years old, however, wereservetherighttomodifyactivitiesasourinstructorsseefittocomplywiththeagegroupandcapabilitiesofthegroup.

Can I book on the day?No,allcoursesmustbebookedinadvanceandasagroupbooking(4+persons).

Is it safe?Adventureactivitiescarryanelementof risk simplyby the factweare involved in thenaturalenvironmentwhich is constantlychanging.However,allouractivities(onandoffsite)aretaughtandsupervisedby fullyqualified instructorswithprovenexperienceandsoundjudgementandwhohavetheabilitytopitchtheactivityatalevelthatissuitableforthegroup.AswearelicensedbytheAALS,weareapprovedtodeliveroutdooractivities.

Are the instructors qualified?Allinstructorsarequalifiedwithnationalgoverningbodyawardswhere appropriate. Where no governing body exists, staff aretrainedandassessedinhousetostringentoperatingprocedures.Allstaffwillalsoholdfirstaidcertificatesandlifesavingqualificationswhere necessary.

How fit do I have to be to take part in activities?Providingyoucanclimbupyourstairswithoutbreathlessnessandwithrelativeeaseyouwillbefitenoughtakepartinouractivities.Beforeparticipatinginactivities,youwillberequiredtocompleteourMedicalDeclaration.However,shouldyouhaveanyconcerns,pleasedonothesitatetocallusanddiscussthematterinmoredetail.

Am I insured to take part in your activities?Newgale YMCA OEC has public liability insurance up to £10 million.Pleaseaskyourinsurerfordetailsofpersonalcoverrequiredfortakingpartinoutdooractivitiesifyousodesire.

What happens if there is bad weather?Inmostcases,theactivitywillbeadaptedinsuchawaythatitwillbesafetorun,suchasusingadifferent,shelteredlocationorchanginganactivitythatbestsuitstheconditions.Whereactivitieshavetobecancelled,analternativeindooractivitymay be used.

How far away are the sites you use for the activities?Unlessotherwisestated,allourdesignatedactivitysitesare10-20minutesdriveawayfromthecentre.

Can I participate if I have no prior experience of the activity?Yes you can. All our activity sessions are geared towardsbeginner level and our experienced instructors are able topitchthetuitionandactivityattherightlevelforthegroupas a whole.

Can I wear my own wetsuit/kit?Allkitandsafetyequipmentwillbeprovidedbythecentre.This way our instructors can ensure you are appropriately dressedfortheactivityandthatthesafetykitissuitable.Ourkitandequipmentundergoesrigorousandregularchecks.

PLEASE READ, UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT THEFOLLOWINGCONDITIONSPRIORTOSIGNINGYOURRESERVATIONFORMANDBOOKINGYOURCOURSEPLACE.

1.CONTRACTUALARRANGEMENTS Your Contract is with Newgale YMCA Outdoor ActivityCentre,asubsidiaryofYMCAWalesaregisteredcharity(no.512259),registeredinEnglandandWales,whose registered office is Newgale YMCA OEC, Peny Cwm, Haverfordwest, SA62 6LA. The address forcorrespondenceforallmattersrelatingtothiscontractis:CentreManager,NewgaleYMCAOutdoorEducationCentre,PenyCwm,Haverfordwest,SA626LA.

2.BOOKINGS,FEESANDPAYMENT Once you have discussed your requirementswithoursalesteam,andsubjecttoavailability,wewillholdtherequirednumberofplacesonyourselectedcourse for up to 14 days. To then secure these places on aprovisionalbasisbeyondtheinitial14dayperiodwerequireasignedReservationFormandthepaymentonanon-refundableholdingdepositof25%percourse.Thisholdingdepositwillbedeductedfromyourfinalaccount. In order to proceed with your booking, andwithin14daysof sendingus yourReservationForm,youwillneedtoadviseusinwriting(bypostoremail),ofthenumberofparticipantsyouwishtoconfirmonyourcourse.DuringthistimeyoumayalsoliaisewithourSalesTeamtofinalisedetailsandpricesfortailor-madeprogrammes.Inallcasesfurtheramendmenttoyourgroupwillstillbepossibleafterthistimesubjecttoparagraph3,‘AmendmentorCancellationByYou’. Wewillthensendyouacontractandaninvoicefor your 25%non-refundable deposit. If you do notconfirmthenumberofparticipantswithinthe14dayperiod we will assume that the maximum numberindicatedonyourReservationFormwillapplyandwillinvoiceforthe25%depositonthisbasis.Yourdepositpaymentwillbeduewithin28daysoftheinvoiceandonlywhenwehave received yourpaymentwill yourbookingbeconfirmed. Paymentofthefinalbalanceforthetotalcoursefee is due not less than 6 weeks before the start date ofyourcourse.Thefinalbalanceduewillbecalculatedasthetotalcoursefeesplusanyotherrelevantchargesless theholdingand25%depositswhere thesehave46

If either your deposit or final payment ismorethan two weeks overdue, this will be a breach of thecontractbetweenus,andtheCharityreservestherightto treat your course as cancelled by you and may release yourreservation.Foralloverduepaymentswereservethe right to charge interest on the amount outstanding on a daily basis based on the Barclays Bank base rate plus 1%. If you make your booking less than 8 weeksbeforethestartdateofyourcourse,thefullCourseFeesarepayableimmediatelyatthetimeofthebooking. Supplementary charges which may occasionally occurduringacourse,suchasadditionalstaffingwherenotpre-advisedatbookingstage, lossofordamagetoequipmentorotherproperty,willbeinvoicedseparatelyand such charges are due and payable on receipt of the invoice.

3.AMENDMENTORCANCELLATIONBYYOUa)Amendments: Subject to availability, additions to your groupmaybepossibleupuntil thestartdateofyourcourse,althoughwecannotguaranteethis.Howeveryoumustfirst confirm availability of additional space on yourselected course with us by contacting our sales team.Onceavailabilityhasbeenconfirmedwithus,werequirewrittenconfirmationoftheamendmentsfromyouwithin7 working days or prior to the start date of your course if sooner.Ifanyadditionsaremadetoyourgroupwithin8weeksofthestartdateofyourcoursewereservetherighttochargeandadministrationfeeofupto£20peramendment. Any amendment fees arising as a result of additionalparticipantswillbeaddedtoyouraccountandmust be paid prior to the start date of your course.b)Cancellation: In the event of cancellation by you of a payingparticipantplacemorethan8weeksbeforethestartofthecoursethe25%depositpaymentmaybetransferredtoasubstituteparticipant.Ifthisisnotpossibleandtheparticipantplace iscancelledthenthe25%depositwillbe forfeit and retained by us. Intheeventofacancellationbyyouofapayingparticipant place less than 8weeks before the start ofyourcoursethe25%depositmaystillbetransferredtoasubstituteparticipantbutwereservetherighttochargeanadministration feeofup to£20peramendment. Ifa transfer is not possible then the cancellationwill besubjecttothefollowingcharges;56 to 29 days before start of course, 50% of the totalcourse fees28 to 15 days before start of course, 75% of the totalcourse fees14daysorlessbeforestartofcourse,100%ofthetotalcourse fees Inallcasesthedateofeffectivecancellationisthedayofreceiptofyourwrittenadvice(bypostoremail)byour Sales Team.Coursefeesandcancellationcharges,ifinsured,maybeclaimed back from your insurer according to the terms of your policy. 47

c)Postponement In the event that youwish to postpone (ratherthan cancel) your course will be possible subject to availability and only if the new course dates andparticipant numbers are confirmed at the time ofpostponement. An amendment fee of £20 per paying participantwillbechargedinallcases.Wherethenewcoursehasfewerparticipantsthantheoriginalbookingournormalcancellationchargeswillapplytothenumberof participants not attending the new course. Whereadditionalparticipantsareaddedtothenewcoursenoamendmentwillbepayable.Inallcasesofpostponementthe start date of the new course must be no later than six months after the start date of the original course.Whererequestsforpostponementperiodsexceedingsixmonthsaremade,thecoursewillbetreatedascancelledandournormalcancellationchargesapplied.Wewillnothoweverbeabletoacceptrequestsforpostponementsless than eight weeks before your original start date.

4.FORCEMAJEURE Wewill not be liable to pay any compensationif we are forced to cancel or change any aspect of the Course due to circumstances beyond our control which weoroursupplierscouldnothavereasonablyforeseenorforestalled. Suchcircumstances include,butarenotrestricted to war or threat of war, terrorist activity ,riotsorcivilstrife,industrialdisputes,naturalornucleardisasters,fire,badweather,closureofairports,portsorstations,cancellationorchangesinschedulesbyair,landor sea carriers.

5.INSURANCE Newgale YMCA Outdoor Education Centreprovides Public Products Liability for up to £10millionand Employers’ Liability for up to £5 million.

6. HEALTH Course participantsmust expect to be involvedinadventurousandsometimesstrenuousactivities.Noprevioustrainingorexperienceisrequiredbutyoumustbe of good general health. Those taking part in a Course shouldbewillingtobecomeinvolvedinallaspectsoftheCourse. Medical declaration forms will be sent to youwithyourJoiningInstructions.Thesemustbecompletedand returned to us at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the course. All prior injuries or serious illnesses must be declared. Any illness or injury suffered after thecompletion of the medical form and before the startdatemustbenotifiedtousimmediatelyinwriting.WecantakenoresponsibilityintheeventofanyailmentoraggravationofailmentsufferedeitherduringoraftertheCourse which arises from an undeclared injury or illness. Nobody who has been in contact with an infectiousdisease may take part in an Outdoor Activity coursewithinthenormalquarantineperiod.48

WhilsttakingpartinaCourseparticipantsmustcomplywithoursafetyanddisciplinaryregulations.Wewilltakenoresponsibilityforyoursafetyifyouwilfullycontravenetheseregulations, and such behaviour may result in participantsbeing sent home (see “Behaviour” below). Any specificqueriesconcerninghealthorsafetyshouldbedirectedtotheCentre Manager.

7.BEHAVIOUR Atthetimeofbookingyouarerequiredtofullyadviseus of any illness, disability, social or behavioural problemsthat a participants has, or has recently experienced,whichmightaffecttheparticipantoranyotherparticipantsduringtheircourse.Wereservetherighttoexcludeanyparticipantsbeforeoraftercoursecommencement,ifwehavenotbeenfullyadvised,intheopinionoftheCentremanager,orhis/herbehaviouris incompatiblewithothercourseparticipants. Ifthishappens,youwillbeliableforalladditionalcostsincurredorclaimsfromthirdparties,andwewillnotbeliableforanycompensation.

8.BROCHURES Any prices, statement, descriptions, illustrations,photographs, drawings or any other matter contained inour brochure or other literature are made in good faith but are not guaranteed to be accurate and are intended merely to representageneralpictureofourproductsand servicesand shall not form any part of the Contract between us. We reserve the right to amendourproducts and services fromtimetotimesothatthedescriptionassetoutinourbrochuresandotherliteraturemaynotbeidenticalwiththosesetoutinour proposal to you.

9.COMPLAINTS Wewill try to resolve any problems as soon as younotifyusofthem.IfyouwanttocomplainduringtheCourse,pleaseinformyourCourseTutorortheCentreManager.Iftheproblemcannotbesortedoutsatisfactorily,pleasenotifyoutofficeinSwanseainwritingwithin28daysofthecompletionof theCourse,settingout the fulldetailsof thecomplaints.Wewillreplytoyouwithin28daysofthereceiptofyourletter.

10.LIABILITY We will accept liability for matters which arise asa direct result of our negligence and/or our breach of our contractual duty to exercise care in making arrangementsfor you including any acts of omission by our employees or agents. 49
