City Park Master Plan

City Park Vision City Park is a vital urban park, recognized for its beauty, diversity, and stewardship of its resources. Its 1,300 acres of lush parkland and waterways, crossed by a network of trails, contain a rich array of recreational, educational, cultural and environmental resources well-used by the neighborhood, city, region, and State. City Park is a regional attraction, an important part of the region’s economic development infrastructure and contributes to the economic vitality of the neighborhoods.

Natural Resource Area• The forest was heavily damaged by Hurricane

Katrina. It destroyed most of the forest’s large trees and shade canopy.

• The Master Plan will nearly double the size of the forest; from 33 to 60 acres. The expanded footprint will incorporate Scout Island.

• In the fall of 20090, hundreds of trees will be planted. As the trees grow they will help “knock down” the invasive species that have resulted following the Hurricane.

• The forest will highlight eight different ecosystems:

– Coastal Prairie– Coastal Marsh– Eastern Pine Savannah– Bottomland Hardwood– Upland Hardwood– Live Oak + Tupelo Swamp– Riparian Edge
