What a difference a few months can make! Lastyear’s fears of double-dip recessions and Greektragedies have given way to large job growths(636,000 job gains in the first quarter), improvedinvestor confidence, and the best first quarter forthe S&P 500 in 14 years (up 12.6%). The questionis will this growth continue or peter out like it did

after the spring gains in 2011 and 2010? With a large Band-Aid onEurope, a 7.5% soft landing in China and continued modest growthin the US (2 - 2.5% GDP), we expect the economy and financial mar-kets to churn mostly sideways through the Fall, and not experiencethe 16-18% mid-year drops of the previous two years.

Not that we are without worries, for example: first quarter earningsestimates continue to be revised downward; Spanish debt; weakBRIC growth; absence of QE3; lower than expected job growth inMarch; Iran, North Korea, etc. But this year we have oil at a 7 weeklow, no Japanese earthquake, a shale gas boom in the US, signifi-cant jobless claims decline and no recession fears. In fact, for thefirst time since the Great Recession, private business owners that Imeet with regularly reported significantly higher sales this year.

Stock MarketsMy 2012 year-end S&P 500 forecast of 1500 (up 19%) doesn’t seemas far fetched as it did in early January (see www.optivestinc.com,Resources / Newsletter / Optivest’s First Quarter 2012 Newsletter).However, after a 30% advance from October 2011 lows, we expectsome dips and consolidation before further meaningful gains. Stockindexes and managers’ performance were influenced significantlyby their degree of long exposure to Apple, Inc., whose stock priceincreased from $405 to $600 (a 48% gain) in Q1 2012. Despite fore-

casts of $1,000, someday Apple will stumble and we are keeping a10% (from recent high) stop loss in place while hoping the run con-tinues.

US Energy Independence within 10-15 years?I recently conversed with several of the nation’s energy experts andwas amazed to hear the progress being made in the US to becomeenergy self-sufficient in the next 10-15 years (and a net exporterafter that). Huge new oil/gas/shale fields are being expanded inNorth America, Brazil and the Arctic. Solar power, thanks in part toNano Technology, is becoming more efficient at a compounded rateof 30% per year. Nuclear is not dead. There is plenty of coal to stripmine. Natural gas is at multi-year lows and in abundant supply. How-ever, according to Shell Oil’s CEO, world oil demand will double by2050 and 90% of that new demand will come from non-OPEC coun-tries, with a full half coming from China. And these numbers assumegains in efficiency; without them, demand would triple by 2050.

So what does the future look like? From my reading and discussions,this new energy demand will be met from multiple sources, most ofwhich only make economic sense with oil prices over $100 per bar-rel. The US imports about 12 million barrels of oil per day (MBPD) ofthe 18.9 MBPD that we use. Three quarters of our oil usage goes totransportation. Clearly, more efficient engines will help, as will in-cremental production increases in natural gas, biofuels and elec-tricity (which are mostly produced from coal). Alternative energyand energy efficiency only attracts research and business invest-ment when it’s a profitable alternative to traditional oil-based en-ergy use. The good news is that $4/gallon gasoline will help the USbecome more energy efficient, greener and self reliant. The badnews is that higher gas prices are probably here to stay.

Early in my writing career, I had theopportunity to interview many suc-cessful entrepreneurs for an OC-based regional business/lifestylepublication. While the scope of thefeatured businesses was diverse,

the owner/operators all shared an unerringpassion for their profession and a common be-lief that “if you love what you do, the moneywill follow.”

It didn’t take long after meeting George Powell, founder of the Laguna Beach-basedREUSE Jeans (R.E.U.S.E. – Recycle. Environment. U. Save. Earth) for me to discover thathe was obviously cut from the same cloth (pun intended).

With years of experience in premium denim fabrication and a firm conviction that envi-ronmental awareness can coexist with fashion, George set about turning the garment in-dustry on its axis. With key contacts in textile mills overseas, George and his Chinesecounterparts have redefined the processes that go into manufacturing denim apparel –starting by focusing on the tons of discarded scrap denim that resulted after patternswere cut.

Toward that end, the company developed a means to “rework the scraps of raw material”with newly engineered machinery capable of a “soft opening of yarns,” allowing denimscraps to be cleaned, shredded and spun into new yarn.

“It seems like once I began down this path, everything came together to give rise to thisventure,” he says. “While getting a haircut in Hong Kong, I read an article about the world’swater shortages. Cotton is an inherently ‘thirsty” fabric – it takes a staggering 3,200 gal-lons of water to manufacture a single pair of jeans.

The same story applies to the dyes used to color the years – once the yarns were “bathed,”the dye was literally poured down the drain. George’s processes allow for 80% of thewater and 90% of the dye typically used in manufacturing to be recycled.

Even with eco-friendly practices in place,George knew that his concept wouldn’t trans-late to sales unless his company turned outgreat-fitting, fashion-forward designs. Enterseasoned technical and merchant designerMandie Slayman. Mandie developed the lineand her designs were a hit with customersfrom the start.

“The distinctive shape of our line is a form-fit-ting rise, defined by subtle, but deliberate de-tailing,” says Mandie. “REUSE offers jeans forboth men and women in a mix of washes, col-ors and cuts – from skinny to bell bottoms (andat $95 a pair for women and $125 for men, de-signer denim is far more affordable than itsless eco-friendly counterparts). Our entire col-lection of jeans, jackets, tops, skirts and shortsare all created from 80% recycled materials.”

Over 300 Orange County wine lovers made sure they were inattendance of the Pacific Symphony’s fifth annual PacificCoast Wine Festival (PCWF) held at the chic five-diamond Is-land Hotel in Newport Beach. In addition to raising wineglasses, they also raised more than $160,000 (net) in supportof Pacific Symphony’s artistic and education programs. Thisunique soiree welcomed the cocktail-attired guests to roamthe multiple rooms featuring delectable appetizers, a wide-array of wine-tasting opportunities and an extensive silentauction.
