Legal framework

UIC II standard for rail diesel locomotives (2003)

Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) Directive

– Amendment in 2004 lead to stage IIIA (2006 for DMUs and 2009 for

locomotives)

– Stage IIIB introduced (2012)

– In-engine improvements are no longer sufficient = after-treatments

need to be used for the first time in railway applications

– Stage IIIA and IIIB have been adopted for railway engines above 130kW
