Virgil & Carol Beaty
I grew up in Yankton, South Dakota. Virgil grew up on a farm in Oakland, Iowa. We met in Omaha in a swimming
pool at Maple Manor. Like changed to love in October, 1971. I graduated from Dana College in 1970 and taught at
Loveland School for 3 years. Virgil worked at Western Electric for 4 years and then fixed vending machines for 44
years. We have 3 kids. Chris teaches welding and also is head of the welding department at Metro Community Col-
lege. He has one son, Tyler. Laura is a comptroller in Aberdeen, SD. She has 5 children, Shelby, Kyle, Mary, Eliza-
beth, and Joseph. Melissa is a nurse in Omaha. She has a 6-year-old son, Cameron. When I was 15, I was not sure
there was a God. I was at a Bible camp reading Isaiah and I said, “There is a God!” At 25 I was living in Omaha, mar-
ried and pregnant, and LaVerne and Marvin Kinman came and read a portion of Romans. I accepted Christ. Lynn
Petersen taught on the Holy Spirit—he has been my comforter and helper. He helps me witness to love more and
want to win souls with the help of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
Kathleen Hammond
For many, the news of me joining the church came as a shock. They supposed I already had, based on my participa-
tion in activities. It took me time to call Northwest Hills Church my new church home (I spent 21 years in my first
church, and 22 in the second church). This will be my final church home. Thank you all for being so accepting and full
of God’s grace to welcome me here. God Bless you all. And to answer this question someone asked me, “Yes, I will
be participating in church activities now that I’m a member.”
Carol Olsen
I grew up in Omaha. When younger, I went to Bethel Lutheran Church in North Omaha. I got married at Dundee
Presbyterian Church and then transferred to Westminster Presbyterian Church. I went there for 40 years and was a
deacon for 10 years. Camping is one of my hobbies. I also enjoy watching sports, especially Nebraska football. I am
on the Canasta Club at Northwest Hills, thanks to Lois Gapen.
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I love this time of the year. The leaves are turning beautiful, vibrant colors. The reds, yellows and browns excite
my eyes as they fall from the trees. The air is cool and crisp, which brings to mind thoughts of cozy blankets and
steaming bowls of soup. The children who attend our preschool come in their cute tiny jackets and mittens.
Families are headed off to have fun at pumpkin patches. The weekends are filled with football. And Christmas is
right around the corner!
But before we get to Christmas, there is another holiday that seems to be quickly becoming an afterthought:
Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving holiday has primarily become a day of football, family, and overeating, marking
the eve before Christmastide shopping and all. I admit, I enjoy the turkey and the fun of the holiday. But I also try
to remember the reason for this day off. In 1863, our nation was torn apart by a nasty civil war. In response,
President Abraham Lincoln declared the fourth Thursday of November to be set aside “as a day of Thanksgiving
and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.” Though the nation was living through the
devastating effects of war, they still had much to be thankful for in their lives.
In his letter to the Colossian church, the apostle Paul prays that God fill the people in Colossae with the knowledge
of God’s will so that they may live a life worthy and pleasing to God. Paul lists four characteristics of what a worthy
and pleasing life looks like in the following verses. The last characteristic Paul lists is “giving joyful thanks to the
Father” (Col. 1:12).
This is a great reminder for us. Our Christian lives should be full of thanksgiving to God. Let us give thanks to God,
for he has been good to us and blessed us with many blessings. Take a few moments and give thanks for what
God has done in your life. Even when you feel in the midst of life’s battle, even when things feel like they’re falling
apart, there is still much to be thankful for in our lives. Simply start as I did in the beginning of this letter. Thank
God for the trees and the leaves and the beauty of creation. Thank God for the warmth of blankets. Thank God for
family and friends. And before long, you’ll have a whole list for which to be thankful. Most importantly, let’s be
thankful for what God has done in Jesus for us. The apostle Paul reminded the Colossians (and us!) that through
Jesus, we are the beloved children of God who “have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Col. 1:12-14). As the
old hymn goes, “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”
Know that I am thankful to God for all of you here at Northwest Hills Church and the ministry we share.
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Alex

SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Mark and Dianna Cupps are leading the Sunday morning Bible Study that meets in the library at 10:30 a.m. In this 12
-week study entitled “Unshakable Hope”, bestselling author and pastor Max Lucado reveals how the heroes in the
Bible came from all walks of life. They were rulers, servants, teachers, doctors. They were male, female, single, mar-
ried. Yet one common denominator united them: they all put their faith in God's promises.
WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Pastor Alex leads a Bible Study that follows the lectionary. This study meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m.
in the Library. Please join us!
Northwest Hills Preschool Sprout Bloom Grow
Preschool is going very smooth this year. We have 20 students and 3 teachers. Parent/Teacher Conferences were held on October 25 and 26 to give parents an idea on what areas they should be working on with their kids. We are looking forward to a joint activity with the Women’s Association on November 1. The first Family Gathering will be November 2 at 11:15. The kids will be singing an autumn song and making mini apple pies with their parents.
Do you see God every day? Do you look for him every day? Chances are if you see him, you are looking for him.
So often we trudge through the day doing the chores and covering our responsibilities of the day. If good things
happen to us, we chalk it up to luck or have a brief moment of “oh, that was nice!”
According to an on-line website the definition of blessing is something that is extremely lucky or makes you happy.
However, another website defines blessing as having God's favor and protection.
When something good happens or I see something that makes me happy, I feel “lucky” to have seen it. I give
“luck” more credit than it deserves. I need to change my thinking from having “luck” to knowing I am being blessed
by God. I would much rather have God’s protection and favor than luck!!
Be blessed and look for God’s blessing each day…if you look you will surely find it!!
In His service,
Suzy Parsons Director of Christian Education
