P & F N E W S LAMBATHA STALL Our Easter stall has been busy, thanks to all who stopped by, and purchased our Lambathes in support of our fundraising. It was lovely to see our Head of College take the time to visit us and purchase Easter gifts while admiring our efforts. Our Easter stall draws not just funds for our school, but parents and students, and staff members who appreciate the spirit of what we do in the lead up to Easter. We enjoy the pleasant conversations that ensue while deciding which Lambatha to buy! They inject a warmth in our College community which is looked forward to by the P&F. We are pleased to notice that we also draw people from outside the school community who like to purchase the P&F Lambathes!       

    PALM SUNDAY LUNCH We will be serving a delicious Lenten menu of entrees, main, including whole fish, and desserts. We invite you to join us with your family and friends. K – 1 2 N E W S The Lenten prayer of St Ephraim the Syrian  

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Lenten prayer of St Ephraim the Syrian was written by St Ephraim a deacon, hymnographer and theologian of the 4th Century A.D. from the region of Syria. This prayer is read at the conclusion of each service throughout the duration of Great Lent from Monday to Friday with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays as these days are dedicated to the resurrection of Christ. This prayer singlehandedly lists both the negative and positive elements of human repentance, and therefore proves to be a measure of our conscience as we struggle throughout the course of Great Lent. The prayer is aimed at our freedom from four basic spiritual illnesses which may prevent us from coming closer to God. The prayer begins by referring to Jesus Christ as the “Lord and Master of my Life.” St. Porphyrios, a newly canonized Saint of the 20th century teaches us that Christians “should love Christ and put nothing before His love.” We each can make Jesus both Lord and Master of our lives by placing Him at the centre of our lives. This can be done through prayer, fasting, meditating on the Scriptures, by living a sacramental life and by placing our faith and trust in God. The basic spiritual disease that threatens every Christian is idleness otherwise known as laziness. A lazy spirit is one that prevents us from cultivating or developing the spiritual

virtues of faith, love and hope. St Ephraim next prays to be freed from meddling or faint-heartedness. Depression and hopelessness are both dangerous as they prevent the human soul from seeing anything positive in one’s existence. The love of power which St Ephraim speaks of refers to greed. St Ephraim reminds us how important it is to be mindful of the needs of others. St Ephraim then prays to be freed from a desire for ‘idle talk’ because there are times that we say things that hurt the feelings of others. The prayer of St Ephraim then moves to the positive aims of repentance which are also four. The first of these is soberness or the need to have a clear mind so that we may meditate on Christ and His teachings and more importantly, apply these teachings in our lives. One of the fruits of soberness is humility and according to St Gregory of Sinai, a humble person is one who believes that they are the least of all people. Patience is the opposite of hopelessness and is the ability to tolerate the positives and negatives of those around us. Love of God is the greatest commandment followed by a love of neighbour, for both are inseparable (Matthew 22: 37-39). St Ephraim’s final request is the ability to see his own errors and to avoid judging others. This can only be accomplished when we foster a spirit of soberness, humility, patience and love, the aim of which is to bring an end to pride that is often within us. Mr A. Blazer is compulsory. UNIFORM SHOP The uniform shop will be opened before the beginning of Term 2 on Wednesday, 15th April between 12.00 midday and 4.00 p.m for any last minute winter uniform purchases.

ATTENTION: CASUAL USERS FOR THE PRIVATE SCHOOL BUS There has been a change to the procedure for the casual bus users. As from Term 2 the students using the private bus route for transport from one campus to another are required to purchase a term pass from either administration office, cost $100 per Term. If any child needs to catch the bus from school to home on a casual basis, please call Parish Administration office 9313-6899 to arrange the bus pass and invoice. Cost will be $50 for each bus pass which will allow the student to catch the bus 5 times only. J U N I O R S C H O O L R E P O R T 25TH MARCH COMMEMORATION My congratulations are extended to all K – 6 students for their exemplary behaviour at the 25th March Commemorations. Well done to Danae Margaronis-Lopez who recited her poem with such conviction in Church. I also congratulate our Junior School Captains Billy Bourdaniotis and Vicki Synesios for the respect they showed to our fallen when they laid the wreath at Martin Place Cenotaph. To the students in the Combined Greek Orthodox School Choir, and to the Conductor Ka. Anna, our heartfelt congratulations for a very moving performance. Mrs Katsogiannis, our Principal of our Senior School, once again did a sterling job as MC for this annual event. Thank you to all of you who attended.

ASSESSING AND REPORTING CORRECTION As reported in our last newsletter, over the coming months, you will notice some changes to the way we assess students and some changes to the report itself. Parent input will be sought early next term as to what information you would like to be included in the report. Please note that there will be formal half yearly and yearly exams for Primary but not for Infants. JUNIOR SCHOOL INFORMATION MORNING AND TOUR On Tuesday 31st of March an Open Morning and Tour was held for prospective parents of the Junior School. If you missed out on the tour but would like to enquire about a place at the Junior School, please contact Mrs Kerameas at the Junior School Office and we would be happy to show you around and answer any questions. KINDERGARTEN 2016 INFORMATION MORNING Kindergarten 2016 Information Morning will be held on Wednesday 29th April, commencing 9.30am. This meeting will focus on the parents of the children who will be commencing Kindergarten in 2016 and will conclude by 11am. A reminder to all parents to please ensure that you have enrolled siblings commencing Kindergarten in 2016, as we are currently working on numbers and classes for next year. Letters informing all K2016 parents currently on our data base, were sent out last week, asking for reply tear off section to be returned to office to secure positions and to RSVP attendance to the meeting. Please do not assume you will automatically be secured a position if you have not completed an enrolment form. COCURRICULAR Cocurricular for Term Two will recommence on 27th April and conclude on the 10th of June.

UNIFORM CHANGE Students are to return to school in Term Two in Winter Uniform. The blazer is to be worn to and from school each day. The Winter Sports Uniform is the tracksuit. The uniform shop will be open before the beginning of Term 2 on Wednesday, 15th April between 12.00 midday and 4.00 p.m for any last minute winter uniform purchases. HOLY WEEK Holy Week is a wonderful time to get closer to God. By attending the services, we follow Jesus through His passion to His joyful Resurrection. If you have not been before, I encourage you to attend the Unction service on Holy Wednesday afternoon, Holy Thursday Evening where our Crucified Lord is taken around a darkened Church in procession, Friday afternoon service where Jesus is removed from the Cross, Good Friday Night for the Epitaphios and Holy Saturday night for the Resurrection service. The children may also like to attend on Lazarus Saturday to make Palm Crosses for Palm Sunday or come early on Good Friday morning to see how the flowers are prepared for the Epitaphios. I take this opportunity to wish you all a blessed Easter (Καλό Πάσχα). Mrs A. Synesios Principal Junior School HARMONY DAY AT ST SPYRIDON JUNIOR SCHOOL Harmony Day is held every year in Australia. This year is special because it’s Harmony Day’s 15th anniversary. Harmony Day always coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs. It’s a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. After all, it is important to respect and understand one another.

At St Spyridon College Junior School, Year 6 hosted the event on Friday 20th March. Students wore orange and there was a range of fun activities available, including Year 6 sharing stories from varied cultures. The day was a huge success! Thank you to the staff and parents for getting involved and congratulations to Year 6 students for their leadership on Harmony Day.

Ms D. McCarthy VISIT TO GREEK ORTHODOX SENIOR CITIZENS It was with great anticipation and pleasure that a group of Year 6 students visited the War Memorial Hospital Waverley on Monday 23rd March to perform for Greek Orthodox Citizens who had gathered there to celebrate Greek National Day and the Annunciation of the Theotokos. The Year 6 students brought tears and smiles to these older members of our community with their chanting and singing, and their performance of Rigas Fereos and his Thourios - Ο Ρήγας Φεραίος κι ο Θούριος.

All present agreed that it was a memorable coming-together of the old and new generations which undoubtedly should be repeated in the future; a promise both the Greek teachers, Κυρία Άννα και Κυρία Στέλλα, and the students were more than happy to keep.

S E N I O R S C H O O L R E P O R T GOOD FRIDAY EVENING Friday, 10th April

At 6.00pm Year 10 students are to meet in the St Spyridon Church Hall to prepare for the Lamentation Hymns. All other students across all years are welcome. Students are to be dressed in Summer School uniform including blazer.

At 7.00pm Year 11 boys, who will carry the Epitaphio, are to meet in the Church Hall for instructions. Students to be dressed in School Uniform including Blazer.

25th MARCH CELEBRATIONS Congratulations and thank you to all staff and students who attended this year’s celebrations. Congratulations to Austin Papadopoulos, Year 8, Eleni Mastroperos, Rhea Tsimboukis and Joanna Skouteris, Year 9, for reciting his poem with such confidence in St Spyridon Church on Sunday, 22nd March, 2015.

Congratulations also to the students who danced at the Domain under the instruction of Mrs Haskas. Wonderful as always. TWILIGHT TOURS Congratulations to all the Student Leaders and volunteers who were able to assist with Twilight tours this week. An overwhelming number of visitors attended this year, which is testament to the positive impression and interest our College is generating in the community. Students warmly welcomed visitors and enthusiastically conducted tours of the school campus, impressing all with their honest and positive commentaries. Thank you to Ms Kokinelis for coordinating the students. INTERIM REPORTS During the holidays all students Years 7-11 will receive an Interim Report on their progress so far. In this report we share what is going well and in particular highlight issues of concern.

Parents will be able to make time to discuss their child’s progress at the future Parent Teacher Conferences. NURSING HOME VISITS

St Simeon Village

On 1st April, 2015 all the Serbian language students from Years 7 – 12 had the privilege of visiting the St Simeon Village Nursing Home. We were able to give the residents Easter cards and even take some biscuits (koulourakia) and home-made cake. Not only could we engage in conversation, but we also had the opportunity to perform a traditional Serbian dance and sing Easter songs with them. It was extremely rewarding experience as we could see how much our visit meant to them and also how much it impacted us; especially students that were able to talk to residents that they remembered from previous years. We all took photos throughout the visit, but perhaps the most interesting connection made was between Ivana and a 94 year old women who can still talk, hear and walk perfectly.

Another resident told us the story of how her family moved to Serbia after the Russian Revolution; she was born in Belgrade, then she moved to Austria where she learnt German. In 1949, she moved to Australia where her family, including her 17 great-grandchildren, now live. Although there was only one Greek resident, she was tremendously proud to see that we were students from a Greek school.

Αγαπητή Ίριδα, Γεια σου! Χαίρομαι πολύ που θα μπορούμε να αλληλογραφούμε. Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, ανυπομονούσα να λάβω μήνυμά σου! Να ξεκινήσουμε λοιπόν τη σημερινή αλληλογραφία με δυο λόγια για τον εαυτό μου, έτσι για να γνωριστούμε καλύτερα. Με λένε Σταυρούλα και μένω στο Σύδνεϋ Αυστραλίας με τη μητέρα μου την Άννα, τον αδελφό μου τον Αυγουστή και το λυκόσκυλό μας τον Μπρούνο. Είμαι δεκαπέντε χρονών και πηγαίνω στην Α΄ Λυκείου, στο κολλέγιο του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα. Είμαι μετρίου αναστήματος – προς το κοντό θα έλεγα – κι ελπίζω να πάρω κάνα δυο πόντους ακόμα. Έχω σκούρα μαλλιά, σκούρα και εκφραστικά – από ό,τι μου λένε – μάτια και είμαι λεπτή. Σαν χαρακτήρας, είμαι λίγο ευέξαπτη, πιστή φίλη, αποφασιστική, πεισματάρα και λιγάκι ανταγωνιστική… Έτσι, για να λέμε τα πράγματα με το όνομά τους! Μπορώ να πω ότι έχω τρομερή διαίσθηση όταν πρόκειται να συμβεί κάτι. Όσο για το πείσμα, άλλους τους φοβίζει κι άλλους τους εντυπωσιάζει. Μερικοί μάλιστα μου λένε ότι με το πείσμα δεν θα πάω μακριά, αλλά κάποιος κύριος – που σέβομαι την γνώμη του – είπε ότι αυτό ίσως και να μου βγει σε καλό. Συγκεκριμένα , είπε ότι όταν στο μέλλον βρεθώ σε δύσκολη θέση θα παλαίψω για να σταθώ στα πόδια μου, είτε οικονομικό είναι το πρόβλημα, είτε εργασιακό, είτε προσωπικό! Μου άρεσε όπως το έθεσε το θέμα και ναι, πιστεύω ότι εάν και όταν τύχουν

δυσκολίες, θα έχω τη δύναμη και την αποφασιστικότητα να ανταπεξέλθω χωρίς να περιμένω καρτερικά τη μοίρα μου. Όσοι με βλέπουν, λένε ότι μοιάζω της μητέρας μου. Μου αρέσει αυτό γιατί την θεωρώ δυναμική και κάπου με κάνει να αισθάνομαι περήφανη. Έχω διάφορα χόμπυ. Μου αρέσει πολύ να μαζεύω κοχύλια και να μαθαίνω ξένες γλώσσες. Επίσης μου αρέσουν οι πολεμικές τέχνες, τα σπορ, μου αρέσει να ακούω μουσική, να παίζω θέατρο… Λατρεύω τα ζώα! Κάτι που με ενοχλεί πραγματικά είναι όταν με κοιτάζουν έντονα. Αισθάνομαι τόσο άσχημα που επιστρέφω το βλέμμα κι εγώ με τη σειρά μου έντονα για να δείξω στον άλλο ότι «φτάνει , αυτό που κάνεις με ενοχλεί». Το εκλαμβάνω σαν να θέλει κάποιος να μου επιβληθεί! Θέλω να πιστεύω ότι είμαι άνθρωπος δίκαιος, αλλά δυστυχώς ζούμε σε έναν κόσμο όπου η δικαιοσύνη έχει πάει περίπατο… Αλλά, ας μην επεκταθούμε σε αυτό το θέμα, γιατί δεν θα μας φτάσουν δέκα σελίδες! Α, ξέχασα να σου πω ότι μου αρέσει πολύ και το διάβασμα. Είμαι ικανή να χάνομαι στις σελίδες ενός βιβλίου ατέλειωτες ώρες! Όταν όμως ο συγγραφέας σκοτώνει τον ήρωά μου…. Ε, τρελαίνομαι!!! Το ίδιο φυσικά ισχύει και με τους ήρωές μου σε αγαπημένες σειρές. Όπως για παράδειγμα το NCIS la. Δεν ξέρω αν το παρακολουθείς, αλλά πρωταγωνιστούν κάτι φοβερά άτομα. Ο καθένας με το χαρακτήρα του, αλλά όλοι μαζί μια φοβερή ομάδα. Μου αρέσει αυτό. Να υπάρχει , δηλαδή, παρέα, που ν’ αποτελείται από ανθρώπους διαφορετικούς, με δική τους προσωπικότητα ο καθένας, αλλά που να μπορούν να ταιριάζουν αρμονικά. Με άλλα λόγια, μου αρέσει να μπορείς να είσαι ο εαυτός σου χωρίς να χρειάζεται να υποκρίνεσαι στους φίλους σου, κάτι που δεν είσαι. Αλλά, και να μην σ’ έχουν στο περιθώριο επειδή δεν είσαι ίδιος μ’ αυτούς. Σε τρέλανα, έτσι; Δεν θα σου ζητήσω συγνώμη γιατί έπρεπε να γίνει η αρχή και είμαι σίγουρη ότι θέλεις να ξέρεις πολύ περισσότερα για μένα.

Λοιπόν, κι εγώ το ίδιο, περιμένω νέα σου και γράψε μου λεπτομέρειες για τον εαυτό σου για να σε γνωρίσω καλύτερα. Σου στέλνω και μια φωτογραφία του σκύλου μου. Είναι ο περιβόητος Μπρούνο, ο οποίος τελευταία έχει πάρει βάρος και όποιος τον βλέπει τρελαίνεται από το φόβο! Τελευταία έχω αρχίσει να διαβάζω ρήσεις σοφών. Θα κλείσω το γράμμα μου με μία πολύ αγαπημένη έκφραση, που την διάβασα κάπου τώρα τελευταία… «Να περνάς τον καιρό σου μόνο μ’ εκείνους που σε κάνουν καλύτερο». Να ‘σαι καλά και να περνάς ακόμα καλύτερα! Σταυρούλα ΥΓ: Μου αρέσει το όνομά σου… είναι ασυνήθιστο κι έχει μια ιδιαιτερότητα. Πρόσφατα διάβασα ότι «το ουσιαστικό της ισπανικής Arco iris και της πορτογαλλικής Arco iris» (ελλ. το τόξο της Ϊριδας) σημαίνουν «ουράνιο τόξο» στην ελληνική γλώσσα. The girls’ team greatly improved as the day progressed, scoring many goals and defending with tenacity. In a Year 5/6 competition, the team made of many Year 4 girls showed dedication and positivity in two their closely fought games and great resilience in their hard games. Congratulations to Vicki Synesios and Mary Diamond who provided consistent defence, Anastasia Lambrou who was best on ground for the carnival and Christie Kalis who showed great skill in winning the ball on the ground and getting the ball moving forward towards goals. Thank you to Guest Coach, Kellie Nolan, for her assistance in coaching the girls and Team B in game 2. Kellie is a highly skilled and experienced U14, U15 Boys Development Coach, State Youth Girls Coach and Senior Women’s Coach. You are fine students who represented the college to your potential. Ms D. McCarthy SENIOR SCHOOL SPORT FUTSAL This term the boys have had two teams contest two different regional Futsal Tournaments. The Open boys travelled to Penrith Sports Stadium where they competed against a number of schools. For the boys this was an opportunity to prepare for the Greek Orthodox Colleges National Schools event. The team performed exceptional in all games and despite coming from behind in a number of games the boys did well to make the finals. Unfortunately

they were not able to capitalise on a number of chances and as a result lost in the final. Despite this the boys get the opportunity to contest the NSW State Futsal Titles later in the year and this valuable match practise would have hopefully helped the boys work on their combinations for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event. The U16 boys competed at Marrickville and were very strong in their opening rounds winning games against Belmore Boys and Blakehurst and drawing with the eventual winners Leichardt High, on the back of very strong performances particularly from the younger boys. The boy’s strong performances throughout the rounds ensured that they made the final, however like the Open boys they failed to win the regional Final losing 2-1. Despite this, like the Open Boys, this team now gets the opportunity to represent the school in the U16 NSW State Futsal Championships later in the year. Thank you to both Mr Zafiropoulos and Mr Meintanis for coaching these teams for their respective tournaments. The U 14 Boys will be competing on 3rd June 2015 at Minto together with a second U16 boys team. CROSS COUNTRY Last Saturday the school had a large number of boys compete in the ISA Cross Country carnival. The boys represented the school in the U12 – U16 events. This was the first year we had training sessions organised for the boys and they all performed to their best. The goal for the boys was to try and improve on last year’s results and for many this was the case. There were a number of outstanding results in the boys, below are some of the results: Peter Trovas 21st in the 12’s Jordan Frazis in the 13’s who placed 22nd Christopher Kumar in the 15s who placed 33rd out of 90 And perhaps the best was Daniel Xeras who placed 13th out of 90 students.

With only the top 10 qualifying, the boys will now need to look forward to improving their performance for next year.

SWIMMING Congratulations to Nicholas Frazis for qualifying for a third straight year in the 50m Backstroke to represent the ISA at the NSWCIS Swimming Championships to be held in April at Homebush Aquatic Centre. Nicholas has being a leader in boys swimming not only achieving outstanding individual results but also steering the boys Junior and Intermediate teams to success during his three years at the College.

SOCCER All boys’ soccer teams have been posted on the Sports Notice Board and students are reminded to check for any errors. Also all students will need to return the necessary completed registration forms for Saturday Sport. The School Soccer season begins in Term 2 Week 2 on Saturday 2nd May 2015, all families will receive information regarding the season via email. Wishing all students and their families a blessed 2015 Easter. REGIONAL FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS On Wednesday 18th March the Open Girls Futsal team travelled to Penrith to participate in the Regional Futsal Championships. This was a strong competition with over 15 teams entered in the girls division. This team consisted of girls from Years 8-12 - this was fantastic to watch as the older girls lead and encouraged the younger students to play with confidence. The girls remained undefeated in the rounds and progressed to the Semi-finals winning 2-0. This result allowed them to qualify for the Grandfinal. The girls were extremely tired at this point having played 5 games previously which led to them losing 1-0. Fortunately they still qualified for the State Futsal Championships to be held later in the year. Outstanding efforts displayed by Tiana Milisavljevic only conceding 2 goals as goal keeper from 6 games and Chrystal Christie scoring 14 goals. This same team will also play at Greek Orthodox Colleges National Schools Event in May. Well done also to the Under 16’s girl’s futsal team who competed in the Regional Futsal Championships on Tuesday 24th March. This was the same team that played in the Friday night Futsal competition; the aim of that competition was to improve their skills allowing them to be more competitive in the Regional Futsal Championships. This was achieved as the girls secured two wins and were unlucky to miss out on the Semi-Finals.

The girls showed dedication in their preparation, training each Wednesday and Friday for the last three weeks. P R E F E C T P R O F I L E  Name: Vicky Papadopoulos Age: 17 Number of years at St Spyridon College: Since Year 7 (5 years) Previous Leadership Roles: Delphian's House Captain (2014) Subjects I am currently studying: English Advanced, English Extension 1, Mathematics (2U), Chemistry and PDHPE. As well as Modern Greek Continuers and Modern Greek Extension which I completed in 2014 as an accelerant student. Hobbies: Dancing, soccer, spending time with friends and family, discovering new places and things. My Future Aspirations: To make it into the University and a course that appeals most to me; find a job that I love, travel, be successful and happy, and settle down with a family and house of my own. My role models: My parents for sure. They do so much for me and I see how hard they work and support me with everything I need so that I can succeed in life and be happy. Favourite Quote: "Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out" and "the harder you work, the luckier you get". One thing I am most proud to have achieved: My results from my Modern Greek Continuers and Extension HSC as well as dancing awards I’ve received over the years. One piece of advice I would give younger students: Work hard and set yourself goals, the earlier you get into good habits for school the better, do what makes you happy, be adventurous and be good to one another.
