SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS ASSEMBLY PROFESSOR MANUEL ARONEY’S ADDRESS Each year about this time I have the pleasure of being invited here to witness a number of very worthy students given academic, sporting and general achievement awards because of their wonderful work at St Spyridon College.

Often we don’t realise how deeply meaningful and satisfying this is to the students themselves, their families, friends and teachers; in fact, to all those who are proud of the College and in particular the student population. Of course, the greatly worthy church leaders of the Parish, are especially pleased as they see the excellent attainments of our children and, as well, the retention of a historical and spiritual dimension which has survived and developed over many centuries reflecting the wonderful accomplishments of the Hellenes and of the Classical fathers of our Christian Orthodox church. All of us are playing an important part in perpetuating the spiritual, intellectual, cultural, sporting, social achievements drawn from earlier eras and contributing to additional knowledge and sophistication move in tune with the times ahead. I express my personal thanks to St Spyridon College and, as well, to the Sydney University Greek Society. Together they are helping to preserve the traditions of the past and to develop even more brilliant concepts and advances for the future. I finish by acknowledging and congratulating the winner of the Aroney Award, Christopher Stasos who is now working his way through a Commerce-Law course at UNSW. I thank you all for being here for this very important occasion. It is an honour, indeed. My deepest thanks to St Spyridon College and SUGS for making today’s award possible.

THE JOURNEY….. MRS. MARINOS Dear Father Steven, Father Andrew, The Board of Governors, The Parish Committee, Mrs Stefanou-Haag, Mrs.Katsogiannis, Mrs Hamer, Mrs Synesios, Parents and Friends Committee, Past and Present Staff, Parents and Students of St. Spyridon College, I have been an educator for 30 years in Primary schooling, of these, 24 years have been spent serving at St. Spyridon College. As you can see there are so many people that I am grateful to for my time at St. Spyridon College. In 1982 I was interviewed by a panel of 12 for the position of classroom teacher at this new school. I still remember my interview and I remember Father Steven and Professor Aroney were two of the interviewers. My first day of teaching was in January 1983. It was such a special and unique time in my life, for standing before me, was this beautiful Year 1 class waiting for my instructions and directions. My heritage and theirs was one. As Father Steven often reminds us, ‘WE ARE ONE FAMILY.’ This is how I felt on that incredible day and I still do now! I have taught infants for many years at St. Spyridon, but have also been involved in many ventures with Years 5 and 6. I was the first teacher to initiate the overnight excursion with Year 6 to Canberra. This then led to two nights in Canberra the following year, and later on, excursions to Bathurst for Year 5. I have also taken groups for Tournament of Minds, where they were successful in winning two of their competitions. I was also part of the Enterprise Education Committee in 2003, where I assisted with the compilation of the recipe book “Greeks in the Kitchen” with Miss Emma Phillips and Year 6. In 2008, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of our school, and the 50th Anniversary of our Church. The Gala Ball was one of my personal highlights as I had the pleasure of seeing many of my past students. One of these students was Anthony Antonas, who was in my very first class back in 1983. What a great delight it was to see my old students. I was as if time had not lapsed. That warmth was still there after all those years. Another memorable function was The Appreciating Culture Lecture and Art Exhibition, where once again the teachers met many of the very first parents of the school at this auspicious occasion. This was followed by

‘champagne and canapés’, which were prepared by the Year 11 and 12 students…. our students. This gave everyone there, an opportunity to taste their fine culinary skills, while appreciating the fine artworks of the students from K-12. As you can see, the years went by so quickly that I hardly noticed it. My years with my St. Spyridon Family will always remain in my heart forever. I have been blessed to have had this opportunity in my life. Again, I would like to thank everyone at the college for everything that they have done for me over the years. I also thank my husband George for all his support and patience throughout the years. I am now looking forward to spending time with my family. One parent from 2C asked their child ”Where is Mrs. Marinos going?” He thought for a moment and replied, “She’s going home.” May God Bless all of you and keep you safe now and forever. Yours sincerely, Mrs. Marinos

Thank you for giving me a great journey of life. I will try and talk to you more often and I will try and go to church more often. Amen. Eve Barton 6M A HERO’S JOURNEY Tuesday 23rd February It certainly was a long journey for us ‘heroes’ to the Blue Mountains. Our teachers say we are all leaders even without badges – and we all agree. When we arrived at the Blue Mountains Grammar School (along with five other schools) we were seated in a massive hall where we met Bec, from Rising Generations. The theme was “A Hero’s Journey” and we participated in different and fun activities. The games required co-operation, skill and leadership. Leaders have three qualities: Influence – obviously positively, to show others the right direction. We also spoke about being successful and finally having vision

Page 13: News 49-04 March 2010

to help the school with ideas and to have good vision for the learning environments. They used certain video clips (like Ice Age 2) to demonstrate qualities. We were told to be open-minded and to step out of our comfort zone. For lunch, we sat on lush grass under an oak tree, eating serenely. It was the perfect opportunity for meeting others. We were shocked when we heard coincidently that their house teams had the same ranking as ours at the carnival. Overall, we found it highly informative and beneficial in acquiring new levels of knowledge understanding and skills. This will assist to live in a harmonious and peaceful community. Demi Nikas 6M
