“I do other things besides pageants. I’m just an average girl.” This is an honest yet modest statement from a young lady from Evansville, Rachel-Victoria Baxter, the recently crowned 2012 Miss Teenager of America. Rachel is the first ever reigning Miss Teenager of America and was chosen after a nationwide search that was judged on her biography, photogenics and a series of Skype interviews. She will go on to represent the United States of America in July of next year down in Panama, Central America and compete in the International Teen Pageant for the title of Miss Teenager Universe. It is the only teen pageant of its kind that hosts competitors on the world stage. This is the equivalent of Miss USA going on to compete for Miss Universe. In August of 2013, the Miss Teenager of America pageant will be held here in Evansville since she is the reigning queen. All of this is quite a big deal for the 18 year old North High School senior. Rachel has seized the opportunity of literally being in the spotlight to shine, helping others in proactive ways while maintaining honor roll academic status and running on her fourth year of being a “Huskette” on the dance team. She is a teen with a big heart who has become a role model for young girls in her community and charities that she truly does care about. They include “Stand Up to Hate and Bullying,” an organization she created to raise awareness and help stop the cycle of hate and bullying in schools. Along with her classmates she has created a PSA video about bullying and it has been sent to the Ellen Degeneres Show for a hopeful feature. She has raised money and gifts through fundraisers to help some families in our community who needed help during difficult times. Her most personal crusade involves her work with Cure 4 Lupus and a proclamation she had gotten Governor Mitch Daniels to sign to allocate more funds into finding a cure for Lupus. Her mother Kimberly was diagnosed with SLE, a serious form of the disease, when Rachel was in 7th grade. On top of all these good things Rachel is involved with, she also volunteers with the American Cancer Society and the Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect Indiana and America chapters. Rachel’s parents, Michael and Kimberly, could obviously not be more proud. Since the age of four they have supported Rachel in her enthusiasm to do the pageants out of enjoyment and encouraged her in all her endeavors. The result is a young lady to be proud of from our tri-state area. Kim says of her youngest daughter, “The best thing for me as a mother is hearing from another mother that her little girl wants to grow up to be just like Rachel.” As a mother of a little girl myself, I can only hope to say the same about my own daughter some day. —Julie Buente

COOKING SPOTLIGHT
Holiday baking should be fun and an outpouring of aff ecti on from your heart to those you are baking for. For the amateur though, deciphering recipes and making them your own can be challenging. To help, Cate Sisco, co-owner of
Piece of Cake, imparts her words of wisdom to lessen the stress and maximize the “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” of your houseguests and gift recipients. Sisco’s fi rst trick is to make a “mother batch” of one type of cookie. For example, bake chocolate chip or oatmeal cookies and porti on them into smaller amounts to add various extras. Suggested chocolate chip based variati ons could include white chocolate and macadamia nuts or chocolate chips, toff ee bits and pecans for a turtle cookie. For an oatmeal cookie base, Sisco suggests adding chocolate chips and pecans or trying chocolate chips, peanuts and M&M’s. The variety of combinati ons are endless and only limited by your creati vity and your palate. Baking ti ps that Sisco recommends include using margarine with an 80% fat content or butt er. She recommends not using light margarine or shortening. She also warns about making sure that spices used are fresh. If the age of your cinnamon is questi onable, throw it out. Sisco also shares, “you can waken you spices up by warming them in a non-sti ck skillet.” Other cookie variati ons can include adding crushed candy canes to a basic sugar cookie recipe, and then rolling your dough in a coarse sugar before baking. Alternately, according to Sisco, “A drizzle of melted chocolate on top or half-dipping a cookie in melted chocolate and adding sprinkles, or chopped nuts is a good way to fancy up a chocolate chip or any other cookie, even a rolled butt er cookie.” She also recommends turning your cookie recipe into a bar format to give a diff erent look and texture to your holiday cookie platt ers. Picking family and friends’ favorites and adding those to a handful of new cookie recipes is a fun way to add variety to your cookie making this season. Sisco’s favorites are pinwheel cookies and sour cream cookies. She recommends keeping an eye out in magazines, on the internet or on cooking shows for new ideas.
Holiday Baking Tips from Piece of Cake’s Cate Sisco
Sisco shares that your cookie dough can be made up in advance and kept in the freezer for up to a few weeks. The trick though, is to scoop the cookie dough onto a baking sheet and place it in the freezer long enough to hold its form. Then remove the frozen dough from the freezer and place it in freezer safe bags unti l you are ready to thaw and bake your cookies. To display your cookies, Sisco recommends placing approximately a dozen cookies in a Christmas ti n lined with parchment paper. She recommends adding a copy of the recipe or recipes to your cookies to allow them to be a gift that can keep on giving. Alternately, pairing the cookies with a mug and packets of cocoa, then wrapping them all in cellophane and adding ribbon present nicely as well. Trays of cookies also make for easy transportati on and ample sharing additi onally. For those without much ti me this holiday season though, or for those who don’t necessarily enjoy baking, Piece of Cake, located at 210 Main Street in downtown Evansville, can help you with all your holiday cookie, pie and dessert needs. Follow them on Facebook to fi nd out what great specials they have each week. —Nikki Davis

Roca Bar North 12301 Highway 41 North Evansville, IN812-868-8898What's Cookin‘
Randy and Andee Sheff er have had their hands in Roca Bar North since the very beggining two years ago. They worked their way up through some confl ict and have
persevered to be the restaurant’s leading man and lady. Sitti ng down with them it was automati cally clear to me how dedicated they are to the place. Roca Bar North is a place that would be easy to be proud of. The outside of the restaurant is contemporary with a slight rusti c feel. A spacious, though inti mate pati o stands out on the left , perfect for live music, watching the game with friends or even a dinner date in the Spring and Summer. Perhaps Roca Bar North’s greatest strength is that they truly are an ‘everyman’s’ restaurant. The restaurant boasts spaces that conform to any occasion. Roca Bar North boasts a full, spacious bar, a classy but simple family dining room and even a private dining room ideal for anything from business meeti ngs to bridal showers. Upon entering, I am greeted by smiling and accommodati ng members of the staff making me feel at home. Soon aft er, I am seated to begin the culinary trek that is Roca Bar North. The fi rst dish set before me is a Roca Bar North favorite and fi gurehead: the Italian Salad. It is extremely easy to see why. Directly aft er you take that fi rst bite a wave of freshness hits you. Ham, egg and cheese contribute a savory fl avor without undermining the light base of the salad. The ham is perfectly tender and is at the peak of its fl avor. The green and black olives punctuate the salad with a taste that starts bright, then transforms from tart to savory. The special Italian dressing is the glue that holds the crisp collecti on of fl avors together. Next out is the Appeti zer Platt er, a variety of fried, snack favorites. One highlight was the onion rings, made to the tune of an old recipe, with batt er that retains a light feel but struck an uppercut of fl avor. Another star of the platt er was the portabella mushrooms, boasti ng an earthy, almost smoky fl avor that was sinfully delicious. The third dish to arrive was another Roca Bar North fl agship. It was the Round the World
Thin Crust pizza. This pizza perfectly refl ects the feel of the restaurant. Just as the restaurant has something for everyone, this pizza has a fl avor and topping for everyone. It is a complete taste package with beef, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers, onions and tomatoes. Next was another pizza, the Barbeque Chicken Thin Crust pizza. I’ve had a couple versions of this pie and this is the fi rst that commands a layered heat profi le. There is a sweet and smoky spice from the sauce with a tart and savory spice from the jalapeños populati ng the top of the pizza. It is a spicy food lover’s dream. It is a colorful dish and a skillfully balanced play on bold fl avors. A few other notable dishes are two comfort food classics with warmth and substance, like being wrapped in a grandmother’s hug. They are Roca Bar North’s Homemade Lasagna and Peach Cobbler. The Bread Pudding with homemade Bourbon Sauce is another treat well worth trying! —Nick Durcholz
Roca Bar North is located at 12301 Highway 41 North on Evansville’s north side.

owned and operated. Rakestraw shares, “The Nickolick family has a lot of history in Evansville. The patriarch of the family Joe Nickolick built the hotel where the Steeplechase Café is located. Family owned and operated means you are free to be creati ve and cater to many diff erent tastes. I don’t feel sti fl ed here. I love to experiment with diff erent fl avors and cooking techniques. I’m free to create new recipes. I like to change the foods I prepare to the changing seasons.” Rakestraw’s drive comes from her passion for food and fl avor combinati ons. She describes herself as a real “foodie,” and she shares that she loves to experiment with diff erent spices, fresh herbs and unusual produce. “I love being able to take a traditi onal ‘comfort food’ and make it fresh and diff erent… put a new spin on an old dish. I love to watch our guests when they try something new. I love the feedback. That’s what cooking is all about for me. It’s very grati fying when you know you made someone happy with the food you created,” said Rakestraw. The Cajun Catf ish Po Boy is Rakestraw’s favorite item on the menu to eat. She loves the spicy, crunchy catf ish and the Cajun mayo. She also notes that the crisp fresh lett uce and roma tomatoes add to the fl avor combinati on. Rakestraw’s favorite item on the menu to cook is the homemade soups. Rakestraw notes, “Our cream based soups are rich and have the comfort factor.” Rakestraw recommends the Peaches & Cream Bread Pudding for the lunch crowd. She describes this menu item as being “covered with a creamy custard sauce. [It’s] comfort food at its best.” For the dinner crowd, she recommends the Shrimp Stuff ed Tilapia with Lobster Sauce because of the many diff erent textures in this dish. Rakestraw describes not only fl aky fi sh, tender shrimp, creamy lobster sauce and the crunchy panko bread crumbs, but the cheese as well. The fact that everything is made from scratch is what makes this restaurant a stand out. Rakestraw notes, “We cater to many diff erent tastes... from country, ‘Comfort Food’ to hand- cut New York strips and rib eyes.” Being a part of a hotel environment gives Rakestraw the challenge factor that other restaurants may not off er. Because their cooking can range from hotel guests using the restaurant and bar, to catering an offsite event, to doing a wedding reception onsite, Rakestraw describes the atmosphere as a “constant changing of hats.” It’s that challenge though, that Rakestraw loves. She credits her “strong and amazing” team for helping her pull off meals that are “perfectly ti med and [that] taste amazing.” —Nikki Davis

The Arthriti s Foundati on will host the 2012 Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk December 8th at Old Nati onal Bank in
downtown Evansville. The race begins at 9 a.m., and proceeds benefit the non-profit organization in its fight against arthritis, the nation’s most common cause of disability. Offering both timed and non-ti med races for all age divisions, the event also includes a non-competi ti ve Santa Chase for kids 12 and under, so the whole family can get involved. All parti cipants are encouraged to dress up for the occasion in a holiday themed costume to promote the spirit of the event. The top overall male and female parti cipants will receive an award, as well as the top three male and female performers in each age division. All kids that enter the Santa Chase will receive a parti cipati on medal. Formed in 1948, the Arthritis Foundation remains focused on the preventi on and control of the more than 100 disease types that plague 50 million Americans each year (including 300,000 children) and hurt the economy through rising treatment costs. The organizati on stands as the world’s largest non-profi t contributor to arthriti s research, investi ng hundreds of millions of dollars. Help the Arthriti s Foundati on reach its fundraising goal by entering the race with family or friends. You can also make a diff erence by donati ng ti me or money to the cause. Registrati on is available up to, and including race day. The cost for entering the ti med or non-ti med 5k run is $25 by December 3rd, $30 from December 4-7th and $35 on race day. —Thomas Ellis

Listen, we can argue about this all day but we both know I’m right: the 80’s was the best decade for music. Not all the members of the Jasper-based cover band Pink Sneekerz (Marvin Troesch and Stacia Buechlein: lead vocals,
John “Nipper” Bernardi: rhythm guitar/bass, Kevin Kress: lead guitar, John Werne: bass/keyboards and Keith Payne: drums) were initi ally in complete agreement regarding this fact. But hold-outs have fi nally come to their senses and now all six of them are ready to rock the party with a new and improved set-list, full of 80’s new wave and iconic rock anthems. Six months ago, this motley crew of musicians ranging in age from 21 to 50 was sti ll clinging to the southern rock of .38 Special and light rock of Jackson Browne. Admitt edly, these acts thrived in the 80’s, but they are not synonymous with the decade in the same way as the B-52’s, Men Without Hats, the Go-Go’s or Flock of Seagulls. Eventually, a light bulb appeared above the band’s collecti ve head and they began to craft a more dance-friendly set by adding new wave covers with a proven track record of inciti ng heavy partying and consequently, drawing bigger crowds. “Before, we were just a typical bar band – music in the background,” explains John Werne. “Now, we’re a band that p e o p l e are coming to see and getting up and dancing to.”
Pin Snee erzk kPreviously, the band played under the name Final Tour (the source of a few Spinal Tap moments along the way), focusing on the more traditi onal rock acts of the 70’s and 80’s. But when the decision was made to move in a new directi on, they lost their female singer. Replacing her proved remarkably easy. “We knew Stacia from when she sang a few songs with us at Ron’s Place (a Jasper bar),” says Werne. Stacia in turn, also wanted to shake it up and break away from the stati c performances with her former band, 5th Degree Burn. “I wanted to get a litt le more upbeat and involved with the crowd. Now, if I’m not singing, I’m dancing,” Buechlein explains.Apart from conti nuing to tweak their set-list, the band wants to make their show fully interacti ve. “There are a lot of things we’re incorporati ng into the show. We throw candy into the crowd. We have confetti blasters, silly string and red balloons. We’re also working on stage props – 80’s memorabilia like a giant Rubik’s Cube, big boom boxes and Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots,” says Troesch. Pink Sneekerz’ next big performance is November 30 at Ron’s Place in Jasper and they hope to make it to Evansville in the near future. Expect a high-energy, dance-inducing show with plenty of surprises (spoiler alert: they are currently working on a Michael Jackson medley). “We usually start off with something like “Jump” which may not be the best dance tune, but it catches the att enti on of the audience and brings them in, then we hit them with the dance numbers,” remarks John. For anyone interested in the origin of the band’s new name, the story is simple: Marvin gave “Nipper” a pair of pink Converse for his birthday last year. The rest is history. —Thomas Ellis

Shock Top End of the World, Midnight Wheat Spoetzl Brewery
Shiner Holiday Cheer
Christy Moore • 4.5 Are you seeking a friend for the end of the world? Well Mr. Orange-Hawk goes mad max in this seasonal brew. A steam punk monocle and wheat infused hair do adorn the chiseled to perfection profile of this fruitily complected Icon. The pour is a nice brown hue that you would expect from a chocolate malt, and though beer snobs may turn their nose up at Anheuser-Bush’s alias product. I have always thought shock top to be a consistent bringer of flavor. This is a great taste with the clever chocolatiers secret, chili and spices.
Jabez Martinez • 4This beer is a clear, dark, amber colored beer. I could smell wheat, chocolate, vanilla and some spices. You can taste the spicy wheat flavors and toasted malts with some caramel flavors. Even with having all of those flavors, this is a real smooth beer to drink. I have always been a fan of Shock Top and glad to see them produce a dark beer.
Nick D • 3This apocalyptic brew pours a cloudy, brownish amber hue. A wheat aroma is present but it is accent by a mild sweet and spicy fragrance. The initial taste is heavy in carbonation and includes traces of vague holiday spices. I thought the brash kick of the texture would fade but it keeps on going through several gulps of the beer. The flavor profile is an odd result for a beer with such an intense name. The flavor is lackluster; it is subtle and vague when it needs to be drastic and bold.
Christy Moore • 4.5A new holiday favorite! I have really been enjoying shiner bock as one of my favorite beers for some time now. So I was rather enthused when I saw that oh so familiar German font spelling out the six letters that have come to be pronounced as a terrific beer in my vocabulary. And this rendition carries the same classic taste but infused with peach and a nutty, hoppy presence. Add it to your holiday wish list and thank Shiner for the gift of flavor.
Jabez Martinez • 4This is a nice, rust colored beer. I could smell a peach aroma instantly with a hint of the pecans. Just as it smelled, the peach and pecan flavor was there but not overbearing. It did have a clean finish which I liked. I usually don’t like flavored beer but I liked this one for something different for the holidays.
Nick D • 4.5The color of this brew from the Lone Star State is brilliant auburn. The smell is like the sultry perfume of hops and pecans infused with peach. This is not only a very accessible beer with its balanced flavor and smooth texture but it is unique, interesting and has its own personality. This is a warming, welcoming brew but the peach injects an element of taboo and excitement. Just as the bottle says: ‘Here’s a brew, just for you!’ The care and effort put into this beer is highly apparent.
Christy Moore • 2.5The pour reveals itself as the black heart at the center of what the Widmers have to offer, completely nontransparent like my understanding of this mysterious brew company. This time the over emphasis of hops bitterness that is a Widmer trademark is there but pleasantly cut with the flavor of chocolate malts and lactose sweetness. A little easier on the pallet than some of the other beers I have had from the brothers. I’m not going to hold my breath that they will ever be on the list as a favorite of mine but that’s why there are so many options out there. After all, there are people who love vegemite, and now that’s just gross.
Jabez Martinez • 4.5This is a dark, brown-black color beer that produced a chocolate head. I could smell the roasted chocolate malts, some earthy hops and coffee. The flavor begins with a mix of roasted chocolate malts and some roasted coffee. I would consider this a medium-bodied beer, but it did have a sweet/dry finish which I liked.
Nick D • 4The hue of this beer is an opaque dark chocolate. The smell is a malty, hoppy; cocoa that comforts and inspires curiosity but does not overwhelm and try to too hard to stand out. The flavor is much bolder than the smell, it comes out swinging with a coffee jab and a bitter right hook. The texture of the stout is very smooth despite the intensely bold flavor, which is a nice balance. Not the most accessible beer but it would please any fan of strong brews.

•There is an Egyptian beer, called bousa, that is brewed from millet and has been a favorite drink of many for over 3,000 years. Modern Ethiopia has a version made from wheat. It has been hypothesized that this might have been the origin for the word “booze.” Other spellings used are boza, bouza, and booza. Take your pick.
•In 1116 BC, Chinese imperial edict stated that heaven required people to drink beer.
•The music for “The Star Spangled Banner” was derived from a British drinking song called “Anacreon”.
•According to The Code of Hammurabi of ancient Babylonia (c. 1750 B.C.) a merchant could be put to death for diluting beer.
•In Medieval Europe, brewing and baking went together. Thus women were the first European brewers and were often called ale wives.

Christy Moore • 3.5I The pour kind of resembles a flat cola. There was a potent sharp flavor that hit me at first but then it settled like when you jump in a pool an you get use to it, and you don’t mind being there for a little while. i think we became friends by the end and then I found out I liked it even more when on their web site, I accidentally selected the not 21 yet disclaimer and was given the options of basket weaving, whittling or bird watching as alternate hobbies to drinking, and found out that this brewery shares my sarcastic humor.
Jabez Martinez • 3.5This is a dark brown, transparent beer. I could smell the standard chocolate, coffee and sweet characteristics. The flavor matched the aroma and overall it was an enjoyable beer. It did not have much body to it, but I would say it was just OK. It was pretty easy to drink, but it had nothing that really set it off.
Nick D • 4The name says it all for this brew. It pours a thin, scant yellowish hue and the scent of the hops is significant but not as strong as I thought it would be. The initial taste is subtle and really refreshing. There is just the right amount of sweetness that suppresses the bitterness of the hops. Add a lemon slice and this beer would be complete. It goes down smooth and demonstrates brewing care and precision.

This December, Bill graces theatres in a stand-out role as Franklin D. Roosevelt in Hyde Park on Hudson. With Laura Linney and Olivia Williams at his side, the film is proudly supported by a talented, captivating cast. Hyde Park on Hudson explores the tantalizing romance between FDR and his distant cousin Margaret Stuckley (Linney). The period piece is set during one weekend in 1939, when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visit New York. Roger Mitchell, who has directed an array of charming pictures including Notting Hill, Morning Glory and Venus, has taken the reins of this upcoming film. Mitchell and company have also used the words of Richard Nelson, an award-winning playwright and screen writer from Chicago. The film went through the usual festival circuit earlier this year- to extremely mixed reviews. All of the awards gossip put to rest; Bill Murray’s fresh portrayal of the late president is a tempting watch for his massive audience. I believe, as I did with My Week With Marilyn, that an actor stepping out of their comfort zone to this degree should be welcomed, not critically scrutinized. To portray an iconic historical figure is a brave choice for a Hollywood performer who always has the option of sticking to dead-end, repetitive roles. No matter the critical outcome of Murray’s performance, I am excited for his outreach into other realms of performance and will view his new film with an open mind.

Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor reunite in the drama disaster flick The Impossible. Under the guidance of Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, the film will recount a family’s struggle to survive after the devastating 2004 tsunami in Thailand. The movie will feature actual Thai locations of the disaster, as well as hundreds of extras who directly experienced the tsunami in real life. Don’t go in expecting another Twister or 2012. With over 200,000 people killed in the catastrophe, the film aims to convey the relationships both wounded and strengthened during the aftermath. Watts and McGregor lead the film as the mother and father of three children, all of whom become
separated during the tsunami. Watts, in critical medical condition, seeks the urgent care of her son, played by Tom Holland. Meanwhile, McGregor claws through a foreign, chaotic land in search of the rest of his family. With a limited release this fall, the film has already received unanimous critical acclaim and has been called “realistic,” “frightening,” and emotionally intoxicating. The Impossible will be one of the first films to utilize 3-D sound technology. The audio effect created in Spain, will create a fuller, multi-dimensional experience in a normal theatre setting that can also be played at home. —Jacqueline Greenberg

The Dark Knight risesWarner Brothers
The Dark Knight was a child of an apocalyptic world. Gotham stood on the fence between dying or dancing into the seeding chaos of a city going under. Batman, a fervent moralist, struggled to define what was “good” opposite the Joker, whose anarchy collapsed the meanings of right or wrong. Rapidly, each character fell victim to the fear and temptations of their inner demons. The line between villain and superhero became forever blurred. We find Bruce Wayne eight years later in The Dark Knight Rises. Bruce, traumatized and without the strong identity he built at the start of the trilogy, has isolated himself from Gotham. Slowly, his walls of apathy and spite fall away at the rise of a new terrorist- Bane. While the Joker was psychopathic; a lone operator of a scheme to rip apart mental and emotional idealization, Bane is energized by the revolt of his fellow man. Embodying the air of a classic revolutionary, Bane is the voice of vengeance for the downtrodden. To awaken from years of recluse, Batman must once again understand the philosophy of the enemy within himself before going into battle. In this film, we find the most humbled Bruce Wayne of the series. His moral compass has been damaged, but it is this damage that makes him more defined. The trilogy merges Batman and Bruce Wayne in a conclusion that continues to give the franchise life beyond any other contemporary comic book movie. It is a necessary, entertaining and fantastic finish for fans. —Jacqueline Greenberg

What did Jacqueline Siegel leave behind on her path to forming one of the wealthiest families in the United States? This documentary follows Westgate Resort mogul David Siegel and wife Jacqueline, as they raise eight children in a near 30,000 square foot mansion. The filmmakers allow us into the world of their four nannies, daily shopping sprees, limo drivers and what it means to be American royalty. But unlike The Hills or Keeping up with the Kardashians, the Siegels are portrayed with a realness and respect that is obliterated in modern television. The film stands as a study of the super-rich; unbiased and deeply curious. Jacqueline and David have planned on completing their second home- an 80,000 square foot mansion, the largest home in the country. But when the economy spins
downward, David risks losing everything his company was built on. The new mega-mansion and his relationships with his family take a backseat. We then see the sad dissolution of what once appeared to be picture-perfect. Money, overspending and indulgence become coping mechanisms for a family that is long estranged from their humanity. David Siegel, the man who claims to have gotten George W. Bush elected in ways that were “not legal,” is a frightening match against his lonely, former Miss Florida wife. Together, the film offers a fresh view on themes of love and money, and begs the question if the two can ever co-exist in the world of the super wealthy.

Stone SourHouse of Gold & Bones Part 1Roadrunner Records3.5 starsConcept albums are notoriously dicey propositi ons that oft en fail spectacularly by over- intellectualizing the material, placing more emphasis on the theme
(however convoluted) than the actual songs. But when done right, for example, as in the case of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, the results can transcend popular music all together and create a phenomenon. The latest band to att empt the high wire act is Stone Sour, Slipknot lead singer Corey Taylor’s other musical concern. Based on a graphic novel writt en in tandem with the album, House of Gold & Bones revolves around a main character called ‘The Human’ who is in the midst of an existenti al crisis and imprisoned by dreams. A high concept, indeed, but are the songs any good? Yes.The lead single “Absolute Zero,” follows the formula of popular Slipknot songs like “Dead Memories” with a stadium-ready chorus. Mostly eschewing the mellow feel of past Stone Sour hits “Bother” and “Hesitate,” Taylor stays primarily in angry voice, raging through riff monsters like “RU486” and opening track, “Gone Sovereign,” full of pain and posturing. His soft er side does appear in “The Travelers” and “Taciturn,” both string-laden laments. Musically, the album covers familiar territory, but Taylor’s themati c approach should keep long ti me fans intrigued.
The Winter SoundsRunnerNew Granada Records4 starsImagine if Snow Patrol and The Killers formed a super group and wrote Head on the Door era Cure anthems at twice the speed with a hint of 80’s synth, like a-ha and a
nod to contemporary indie darlings The Arcade Fire. This is the infecti ous style of The Winter Sounds. Patrick Keenan remains the lone original member of the band he started in Athens, GA, and his aff ected melodramati c vocal delivery dominates the material. It occasionally relegates the music to background noise but more oft en driving the songs forward with a pleasant urgency. While The Winter Sounds’ live arrangement is a more democrati c aff air, Runner highlights Keenan’s clever synth melodies and solos to wonderful eff ect. It covers both nostalgic and contemporary ground. The album is bookended by the two strongest tracks, “The Sun Also Rises” and “Carousel.” Each a calling card for the band’s musical blueprint: swelling, swirling verses that give way to catharti c choruses awash in Keenan’s mournful, desperate

wail. And yet, some of the most beauti ful moments occur when his voice fades, allowing the keyboards to do the emoti onal heavy-lift ing. Keenan routi nely picks out the loneliest notes to perfectly compliment the minor key chords. With Runner, The Winter Sounds have created a dark, yet joyous album for all seasons.
BentoDiamond DaysDiamond Day Records4 starsFresh off the dissoluti on of his former band Silverchair, Ben Gillies steps out from behind the drum kit with Diamond Days, an impressive att empt to forge a solo career aft er being dwarfed by the cult of singer Daniel Johns for years. Gillies pulling off a turn at the microphone is not
enti rely surprising however, the depth and variety of the album is. The ti tle track takes the bass line from R.E.M.’s “Orange Crush” and peppers it with Coldplay piano and guitar, while Gillies sings as earnestly as Chris Marti n himself. Aft er this relati vely predictable and tepid start though, things get pleasantly weird.“Miss My Mind” signals the shift from the pop intenti ons of the fi rst third of the album to the more free-wheeling, out there approach. Everything that follows is a Roger Waters chord progression and extended Hendrix guitar solo that fades into stati c. A couple songs later, “Wheels” takes the listener on a minor key, funk romp which is in turn followed by the most rocking track, “Poison Ivy.” Fueled by a mean 70’s guitar riff that Lenny Kravitz would be proud of, the track careens from style to style yet maintains a bewitching fl uidity. From the sound of Diamond Days, Gillies will live in the shadow of his former band mate no more.
Goodtime Boys What’s Left to Let GoBridge Nine Records3 starsFor the fi rst minute and fi ft een seconds of What’s Left to Let Go, dual guitars hover in the background, absently picking random notes before suddenly joining forces to usher in a sound reminiscent of 90’s-era alternati ve groups such as Archers of Loaf and Sleater Kinney.
Then the screaming begins. Goodti me Boys’ lead singer Alexander Pennie is sure to polarize listeners with his vocal approach. It is an anguished howl with no let-up, even when the music dictates otherwise. But this may be completely intenti onal, a way to separate the uncertain from the dedicated. Whatever side of the fence listeners end up on, there’s no denying the avalanche of guitar hooks that interlock and weave a complex mix of melody and near-metal. On tracks like “Rest” and album highlight “Daylight,” while Pennie coughs up blood for the durati on. As the album progresses, the novelty and mild irritati on of constant screaming wears off a bit (just a bit,) and it becomes easier to appreciate the band’s M.O. Also, to acknowledge the subtle genius at work in “Bliss” and “Sleep,” which musically shift ti me and temperament several ti mes over. Goodti me Boys may never achieve mainstream recogniti on with their unrelenti ng style, but an underground following of die-hard fans seems completely appropriate. —Thomas Ellis

Swans The SeerYoung God RecordsThe brooding, experimental ti rade of Swans has developed into yet another studio album since the bands’ bloom
in 1983. At over two hours long, Swans pours multi -instrumentati on and organic atmosphere into one of their most ambiti ous albums to date. The Seer haunts and uplift s, delivering a masterful compositi on through a primal voice. Check out Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s in one of the album’s most defi ning tracks- Song for a Warrior.
The Chaw Self-ti tledDiablo Valley RecordingsThe Chaw’s lead singer has been compared to a modern Jim Morrison. And yeah, his voice hits with an uncanny parallel to Jim,
someti mes with an exactness that is exhausti ng. As a unit, the band carries a strong, steady tone that is oozing with reverb and soulful moans. Even so, the psychedelic-blues album falls short of bringing what their doppelganger crooner made so essenti al to his work; being able to let go.
The Walls Are Blonde Buying TimeSelf-ReleasedBuying Time pops the bubble between arti st and listener. David Kleiser’s soft ,
burdened whispers are captured in this delicate collecti on of true lo-fi recordings. His vulnerable folk songs blend into something desperate and moody against a fuzzy, scratchy audio quality. Kleiser’s tracks hug and hold the hearts of listeners with bitt ersweet, rainy-day nostalgia. It’s a humble, beauti ful and honest record from this multi -talented, Canadian musician and arti st. —Jacqueline Greenberg

The player can directly feel the immediacy and thrill as they have to save a man hanging, entangled in the riggings of the ship as a mast fails. Haytham runs cat-like along a mast support and makes a diving jump to save the sailor. The depth and detail of the urban environments are stunning, boasti ng an array of complex textures and design true-to-period. This, coupled with movie-quality voice acti ng and historical fi gures really allows the player to be swept up into this momentous ti me and place. Almost directly aft er landing in Boston, Haytham runs into inventor and one of the architects of American government, Benjamin Franklin. Franklin greets Haytham warmly, if not a bit sardonically. On Haytham’s fi rst visit to Franklin he schools the player on the benefi ts of keeping company with older women, spouti ng outrageous innuendoes like, “In the dark, all cats are gray.” It is excellent comedic relief that pulls from Franklin’s real-life personality. The game has a massive cache of new weapons and hand-to-hand combat that is even more fl uid, aggressive and cinemati c. In one kill, Haytham used a chimney to push off of, hidden blade fi rst, at the nearest enemy.
