  • IT Security

Everywhere we turn these days it seems as though another IT Security breach is making headline news. Cyber-attacks are continuously becoming more sophisticated and harder to guard against. Now more than ever before, businesses and consumers alike must balance the usability of their internet-connected devices and networks with the security of their information.

For years, businesses across all industries have used the excuse that hackers only target big companies. That justification no longer works. More and more attacks come by way of malware-infected emails spammed to millions of email addresses and drive-by downloads on compromised-legitimate websites on which any user could accidentally stumble. For example, it was widely reported that the method hackers successfully used to attack Target late last year was through the use of a malware-laced email sent to employees of a relatively small HVAC firm that did business with the national retailer. It only takes one employee to click on a link or open an attachment and a business’s entire network (and in this case their client’s network) can potentially be compromised.

Here at River City Bank, IT Security is a top organizational priority. We go to great lengths to keep your data safe and secure. Below are some areas of focus at River City Bank that you may also want to consider for your business:

    1. Focus on the people, not just the technology – All River City Bank employees go through annual information security training as well as frequent social engineering (the art of manipulating people so they give up confidential information) testing. We also test our staff with authentic looking phishing emails sent by our internal audit department. We push the envelope to make sure our test emails look as real and the links as inviting as possible. Why? The hackers aren’t making it any easier on us, so why make our tests easy?

    2. Focus on the technology – Network-level intrusion detection and prevention systems guard the perimeter of the Bank’s network. We have next-generation host-based intrusion prevention systems (HIPS) installed on River City Bank computers and servers to protect the Bank from threats that might make it through perimeter security layers.

    3. Consider audits your friend – Just ask our Chief Information Officer, Eric Johnson. His team is frequently audited by the Bank’s internal audit department, hired-external auditors, as well as our state and federal regulators. While audits are never “fun,” I know he will agree that his team performs their jobs better because they are audited. All businesses should consider having their technology department (whether in house or outsourced) audited regularly by an independent-third party.

    4. Remember the basics – It is still important to pay attention to the fundamental elements of IT security, such as:

    a. complex, unique and rotating passwords for each account

    b. business-class firewalls with inbound and outbound port restrictions

    c. proper network segmentation

    d. limited administrative access to servers as well as PCs

I am happy to announce that our Chief Information Officer has developed a few IT Security videos to help educate you on basic IT security practices. I hope you’ll take a moment to view these relatively short educational videos. If you have any further questions or would like more information, please contact Eric Johnson at [email protected]. He is always happy to address your IT security questions.

In 2003, St. HOPE Public Schools was launched as a series of three public charter schools and a public preschool with the goal of providing a rigorous and high-quality college-preparatory education, pre-Kindergarten-12th grade, to the youth of Oak Park. The four schools service approximately 1,600 students and today, 90% of its High School students are accepted into four-year colleges.
