Oregon Region Remembers Monte Shelton - 1933-2019

Legendary Pacific Northwest racer Monte Shelton has died at age 85. His professional racing career included appearances in the US Road Racing Championship in 1965, ’67, and ’68. He competed regularly in the SCCA’s Can-Am series, from its inception in 1966 through 1974, and made several starts in Formula 5000.

But it was in the Trans Am Series that Shelton achieved his greatest professional racing success. In over 40 starts between 1976 and 1987, the Portland, Oregon, driver racked up five victories, two pole positions, and 14 podium finishes driving a variety of Porsches.

On the amateur side, Shelton won the Rose Cup race a record seven times, and had nine second-place finishes. He entered the very first Rose Cup race in 1961, and his seven victories were spread over five decades.

Shelton qualified for the SCCA Na-tional Championship Runoffs four times, first in 1968, when the event was held at Riverside International Raceway. His best finish came in 1975 — a second place in A Sports Racing at Road Atlanta driving a McLaren 8F, which he also raced in Can-Am.

Outside of SCCA, Monte competed 10 times in the 24 Hours of Daytona and had a third-place finish in 1979. He also competed several times in the 12 Hours of Sebring, and in the IMSA Camel GT series.

Shelton was a lifetime member of SCCA, and was one of the six founding members of the Oregon Region in 1962. In recent years, he raced a Volkswagen Rabbit at the regional level, and held a current competition license.

By Jeff Zurschmeide

“I have held an SCCA competition license for 60 consecutive years, and never had a waiver,” he said just weeks ago.

His final race was in March of this year.

Off-track, Shelton was Portland’s premier British car dealer, selling everything from MG to Rolls-Royce

over the years. In retirement he maintained a small business deal-ing in specialty vintage sports cars, known as “Monte’s Motors” after his first-ever car lot.

Shelton is survived by his wife Sue; daughters Darla Krieske and Jamie Martell; sons Tony and Neil Shelton; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Full Weekend at the 59th Rose Cup RacesThe Rose Cup Races have never had more to offer than this year. If you love sports car racing, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Pro Racing is Back

The Portland racing community has worked hard to attract the newly namedPirelli GT4 America and TC Amer-ica professional racing series. The GT4 series includes FIA-homologat-ed production cars, carefully pre-pared to European racing standards. This series replaces the GTS class that raced in Portland last year. GT4 is part of the Blancpain GT World Challenge racing organization. Look for intense action in the pits as these cars pursue a one-hour race with a mandatory driver change.

The TC America series is return-ing with two race groups this weekend. The main Touring Car group includes powerful racecars from BMW, Nissan, and Hyundai. The TCR and TCA classes will run together in their own race group. TCR includes race-prepared current model sports cars from Honda, Mazda, Audi, Hyundai, MINI, Alfa Romeo, Subaru, and Volkswagen. The TCA class offers many of the same cars in a limited-preparation format.

As a special guest, the Saleen Cup series will put on a show this year. Piloted by aspiring pro drivers, the Saleen Cup races in identical Saleen 1 exotic cars built and maintained by the Saleen factory in California.

The Best of Northwest Racing

In addition to the professional race groups, the Rose Cup Races will again showcase the finest of local racers in four race groups:

• The Rose Cup Big Bore Feature Race presented by Proficio Singa-

Page 6: News and INformation From Oregon Region Sports Car Club of

6 Oregon Region SCCA

pore includes the fastest and most powerful racecars in the Pacific Northwest. Drivers give everything they’ve got to win this one.

• Spec Miata presented by Casa Bella Granite, Marble & Quartz is sure to be one of the best races of the weekend. Spec Miata drivers race in similarly prepared Mazda Miata sports cars. These highly competitive drivers always deliv-ered an all-out battle for the win.

• Spec Racer Ford presented by Market of Choice is among SCCA’s leading race groups. Spec Racer Ford cars are identical, purpose-built racing machines with factory-sealed engines. It takes both talent and skill to get ahead of the pack in one of these cars.

• The Wemme Trophy Vintage Group presented by Columbia Roofing showcases the best of yesterday’s racecars. Take a trip down memory lane to see how the great Rose Cup races of the past are still racing today.

All race groups will be on track several times each day, so you won’t miss any of the great racing action at this year’s 59th annual Rose Cup Races.

The Rose Cup Races weekend features practice and qualifying on July 12, and racing events on July 13 and July 14. Gates open at 7:30 am daily, with cars on course by 8:30 am on Friday and Saturday, and by 9 am on Sunday. Races run until early evening each day.

Have You Joined Friends of PIR? It’s Easy and it’s Free! Portland International Raceway (PIR) is unique among North American racing facili-ties because the entire facility is a city park. As a public resource, PIR is affordable for us-ers and is available to numerous groups not connected with motorsports, such as runners, bicyclists, swap meets, and the winter light show. PIR is also used as a training facility for law enforcement agencies. PIR has been the host track for all 59 annual Rose Cup races.

As Portland’s only remaining auto racing track and one of the city’s largest and most diverse parks, PIR is a valuable community resource for numerous community activities. Local and national users alike have contrib-uted to PIR’s maintenance and enhance-ment and it has been largely financially self-sustaining. Today, the facility is entirely supported by the users who hold events here – no tax revenues are used to maintain or improve PIR.

Friends of PIR is a 501(c)3 non-profit orga-nization committed to the preservation and enhancement of PIR as a resource for those who use it, both participants and spectators alike; sustaining and expanding PIR’s civic contribution as an institution in North Port-land and providing support to ensure PIR’s ongoing value as a venue for motorsports and other diverse forms of recreation and entertainment.

Friends of PIR strives to maintain an open dialog with the broader community within Portland through meetings and other inter-actions which are aimed at establishing a relationship of mutual respect and can serve as the foundation for moving forward to find solutions to common problems. Friends of PIR is confident that continued collabora-tion with the community can lead to greatly improved relations between the community and PIR, to the benefit of all parties.

You are invited to join Friends of PIR. Mem-bership is free to anyone. Also, please feel free to forward any of our information to your friends or organizations. If you are interested in becoming a Friend of PIR, visit us online at www.friendsofpir.com.

Tim Adolphson, Gig Harbor, WashingtonNo. 88 GT-1 Chevrolet Impala SS

Tim Adolphson is one of the boldest drivers in the Pacific Northwest. Tim is a veteran of the SCCA National Champi-onship Runoffs and the professional Trans-Am West series and he’s used to winning. He hasn’t yet won the Big Bore group at the Rose Cup Races, but this could be his year. Look for his powerful Chevrolet Impala SS to qualify at the front and take an early lead. If Tim breaks loose from the pack, it could be a runaway win.

Cindi Lux, Aloha, OregonNo. 45 TA3 Dodge Viper

Cindi Lux is among the best drivers in the Pacific North-west, but she’s never won the Big Bore race at a Rose Cup weekend. Her day job is piloting the No. 45 Viper in the pro-fessional Trans-Am racing series. “We are out to have some fun this weekend. It’s just tremendous being back home running at my hometown track. We don’t have the outright speed to win but we are reliable when it comes to finishes. I am a student of the sport and every time I get in any racecar I discover something new.”

Brian Richards, Burnaby, British ColumbiaNo. 12 GT-1 Chevrolet Camaro

Brian Richards is a four-time Rose Cup winner, back to try for a fifth win in his “Canned Heat” Chevrolet Camaro. Richards claimed the Rose Cup in 1993 and 1994, then again in 2011 and in 2017. Richards is known as a smart, careful driver who does not make mistakes. He qualifies well and then gets out in the lead in the first few laps. Once he has the lead, Richards is very hard to catch.

Scotty B. White, Auburn, WashingtonNo. 0 GT-2 Dodge Viper Competition Coupe

Scotty B. White is a past Rose Cup winner, and a World Challenge veteran. He’ll be racing his trademark No. 0 Dodge Viper this weekend, but Scotty is as comfortable in his Mustang running for an SCCA national championship. Scotty is known as a fast, smooth driver who can wait for the race to come to him. Watch Scotty take his time and reel in the competition before the checkered flag flies.

Four Drivers to Watch in the Big Bore Rose Cup RaceAmong the many great drivers in this year’s Big Bore Feature Race, here are four leaders you’ll want to watch closely. Any of these drivers could win the race, and all of them are guaranteed to make a hard play for the lead.

SCCA Rally/Solo Senior Management Restructuring to Begin in 2019SCCA recently revealed a restruc-turing plan with the senior manage-ment of its Rally and Solo programs beginning in 2019.

Longtime program leader Howard Duncan will shift his focus to event operations for the Tire Rack SCCA National Solo program, with the search beginning for a new hire to take on the role of oversight and development for the Rally and Solo departments. Duncan, who joined the staff in 1990 and has been instrumental in the creation and continued develop-ment of the National Solo program, will remain in his current Sr. Direc-tor of Rally/Solo position through the 2019 Championship season before moving to the newly-created Sr. Manager of National Solo Field Operations position this upcoming offseason. “The demands of running the Tire Rack SCCA National Solo series make it extremely difficult to also develop and manage the business side of the programs—these really

need to be two different positions,” said SCCA Vice President and COO Eric Prill. “There wouldn’t be a National Solo program without Howard’s vision and dedication over the last three decades. He’s been flat-out through that time period, developing the series while managing all aspects of the auto-cross and rally programs and being a key member of the national staff.” “I am looking forward to being able to concentrate my efforts on the Tire Rack SCCA National Solo program and to having the new Director bring a fresh perspective to business operations and the development of the Solo and Rally programs throughout the country

at all levels,” said Duncan. “As the complexity and reach of all of these programs has grown over the years, it became increasingly clear to me that we needed to take this approach to see the Club grow to its full potential.” The incoming Director of Rally/Solo will begin a new chapter for the programs, building on its solid foundation with a focus on member experience, operational excellence, technology and program develop-ment.

Solo Season Is In Full SwingThe end is in sight!!

With the 2019 Autocross season already 9 events in, the racing has been fast and furious! June 15th and 16th brought events 8 and 9 around, leaving only 4 events left on the schedule for 2019. July will bring the 2 Packwood National weekends.

The National Tour taking place July 13-14, and the National PRO Solo the following weekend, July 20-21. Registration is currently open for both.

If you have never done one, I would highly recommend it as they are both fantastic event, and its always fun to see and meet some new rac-ers from around the country,

With our June events taking place on Father’s Day weekend, it was great to see so many fathers and sons/daughters racing together! As Saturday rolled around, the weather was crisp and cool with overcast skies above.

The racing was hot and heavy though as Ryan Otis talked his way into a 2019 Chevy Camaro ZL1,

owned by Waylon Goebel. Ryan used Saturday to get a feel for the car, coming home in Second place in Pro Pax.

Ron Bauer came down from the speedy NW Region to wrestle the top spot away with a BLISTERING

50.854 time on his third run. This would give Ron the top PAX time for the day for all the non-junior cars. On Sunday, it was Ryan show-ing just how fast the big Chevy could be taking the win over Dan Bullis by .345

In the Juniors, it was Andrew Nolke for the win in JA as both his brother, Gabe and himself set down some quick times all weekend long. Andrew was able to take the win on both days. In Junior B, it was that Otis family getting another win on Saturday, this time with Sam at the wheel. He was able to just sneak around the always fast Torin Mc-Cusker to take home the win.

Sunday saw Gabe running in Junior B, securing the win with Sam, Torin and Abbie Paulson rounding out the top 4 spots. Spitfire Rachel Kuehn took top honors on both Saturday and Sunday in Junior C.

The always popular S2 class saw some late run drama with Allen Westerskow throwing down a flier on run 3 to edge out George Emery on Saturday. George would get his revenge on Sunday taking over the top spot, with Matt Turner jumping up to take second away from West-enskow late by just .205.

NS3 saw some close action all weekend with the 2 C-Mods of Phil Leavens and Andy Howe leading the way both days. Saturday saw Phil taking the win by a mere .200 with Sunday being even closer as Howe would again fall just short, losing by scant .031 in the closet battle all weekend.

Pro Pax Ladies would be a weekend long battle with Lacy Otis taking a second on Saturday, and a first on Sunday to add to her points lead. NW Region, and National Champi-on Jessie Gauthier played the role of spoiler grabbing the win Saturday.

The ever quick Danielle Paulson sits in second place, and will be looking to chip away at Lacy’s lead at the August events.

With the season end on the horizon, many points battles are still up for grabs. CAM will be down to the wire with Aaron Folkerts holding a narrow 4 point lead over Brian Duncan.

NS4 see Garrett Cogburn hanging on to a slight advantage over Jake Hartough with Rio Rios hot on both their heels. S2 is shaping up to be

a battle to the end yet again, this year with George Emery and Allen Westenskow sitting just 12 points apart.

And in our Trophy Challenge class, Laura Duncan who has been show-ing great speed all year is sitting on top by just 7 points over Ben Holmesmith.

With only 4 events left, the gloves will be off and everyone will be out for blood as we return to Packwood August 3rd and 4th.

Portland played host to event #4 for the SCCA Time Trials National Tour.

Over 50 drivers took turns circulat-ing the 1.967 miles track in Portland putting both man and machine to the test.

With SCCA kicking off the first year of the National Tour, the club is looking to infuse new blood into its program.

With already successful events at Thunder Hill in Cali, Pittsburgh In-ternational Race Complex in Penn-sylvania, and Carolina Motorsports Park in South Carolina, the tour has already proven to have legs.

The SCCA National Tour program

features multiple track sessions, along with a Time Attack section.

Drivers saw 2 practice sessions on Saturday morning, followed by 2 timed sessions Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, the drivers started with the Time Attack session, which showcased turns 4-8 in a segmented session.

They then moved on to the after-noon of 2 more full track sessions to finish off the weekend.

With 5 different prep levels, driv-ers chose between Sport, Turner, Prepped, Max, and Unlimited categories to participate in.

Each category saw different classes

based on car configurations. With all these class options, they are sure to have a class for you!

Max 1 saw two of the most unique race rigs to the track. Kevin Phillips in a 1991 Chevy S10 with LS power was able to wrestle away the win from Sean Fogli in a 1983 Volvo 242, also with a LLS swap.

Both vehicles were both beautiful, and well put together. And you have never heard a Volvo sound so sweet!!

Sport 2 was no less of a battle and it was 2 more autocrossers leading the way. Jason Hicks in his 2017 Mustang was able to keep Dan Bul-lis’s C5 Corvette at bay all weekend long.

Sport 3 saw the largest field of driv-ers as 10 racers chased the top spot on the podium.

In the end, it was local Spec Miata racer Tim Ferrick showing the way in his 2018 Civic Type R. Justin Moore in his 08 Cayman, and Annie Gill in her 2018 Type R rounded out the podium.

Looking at the results from Tuner 3, the M3 was the car of choice com-posing 4 of the 6 cars in class. But in the end, it was Ryan Baldwin in a beautiful Black Audi TT who drove great all weekend long to edge out Andrew Lee in his Mustang to take the win.

Tuner 4 was the second largest class, with the cars ranging from Honda S200s, to Mazda Miatas, and a few Subaru BRZs mixed in for fun. But it was a Cali racer, Tony Rodriguez, putting on a show in his Red S2000. Tony set blistering laps all weekend long to hold off stiff competition.

Unlimited 2 saw the largest mix of cars take to the circuit as a 350Z, Lotus 7, Mazda 3, a VW Corrado, and 2 Mazda Miata’s did battle. Dennis Thoney in a beautifully prepped 350Z was able to hold off

the pack in a stout class of cars.

Top overall time of the weekend went to Earl Zimmermann in his Chevy Camaro ZL1 with a combined time of 3:29.171, Dennis Thoney was second fastest overall with a 3:31.438, and Waylon Goebel third sporting a 3:33.807.

Fantastic action, beautiful weather, and some great racers made for a tremendous weekend of racing. If you have not tried A Time Trial, you should soon!!

If you’ve been around Oregon Region for any length of time, you probably met Monte Shelton, and it was probably memorable.

I have two memories of Monte that, for me, perfectly illustrate who he was. The first happened some time after he survived a heart attack. He was telling me how he went to the gym six days a week, working out and running for a couple hours each morning. I said, “Gee Monte, I wouldn’t want to run a hundred-yard dash against you, and I’m half your age!”

Monte looked at me, smiled, and said, “I’d kick your ass.”

The second happened in the same era. I had a pretty hard day on the annual Monte Shelton Northwest Classic rally. Two of my old cars had broken down on the rally that day, and I finally rolled into the hotel in my daily driver during the “beer wash” car washing party.

I went into the hotel to check in, and when I came back out, there was Monte washing my car for me. I said, “Monte, you don’t have to do

By Jeff Zurschmeide, Area 13 Director

that.” He replied, “You know, my first job was washing cars at a lot on Sandy Boulevard, and I still love to do it.”

Those memories are pure Monte - equal parts competitive and gracious. He had a big heart and a genuine affection for people. That’s how I plan to remember him, and I hope the memory helps me become more like Monte Shelton.
