Cantor Billy Tiep was born in Encino,California and grew up in Las Vegas,Nevada. Billy studied at Hebrew UnionCollege-Jewish Institute of Religion inNew York, where he was invested as cantorin 2007. He served as cantor from 2007 to2010 at the historic Touro Synagogue in
New Orleans, Louisiana. Billy comes to Temple Solel withhis wife Michelle, their son Zachary and two dogs, Oliverand Kona.

On Friday, May 21 at 7:30pm, Cantor KathyRobbins will lead her last Freilich Friday as Cantor ofTemple Solel. She will be joined by YochananSebastian Winston on flute and saxophone, DuncanMoore on drums, Mark Shapiro on guitar, AllanPhillips on percussion and keyboard, Dave Curtis onbass and, of course, Tom Laurence on piano. CantorRobbins and the band will lead us in worship and takeus on a trip down Freilich Friday memory lane.

Keri Jucha And Ethan Epstein Inducted Into Prestigious International Honor Society
Keri Jucha and Ethan Epstein are two of 50 students nationwide to beinducted into the prestigious American Hebrew Academy Honor Society.
The Honor Society was formed to identify the most outstandingeighth grade Jewish students from around the world. The search hasproduced hundreds of nominations. All Honor Society inductees areinvited to the American Hebrew Academy’s beautiful 100 acre campus fora Scholars weekend.
“To be named a member of the American Hebrew Academy HonorSociety is a great achievement,” says Mark Spielman, Director of theHonor Society. “We look forward to meeting each of the honorees andfollowing their successes as they make great contributions to our society.”
Students selected to participate in the scholars program have exhibitedan impressive set of accomplishments, given their age. Keri was chosen bythe selection committee because of her strong will, commitment to tikkunolam and her many leadership experiences while Ethan was chosenbecause of his commitment to improving the world and helping others.

Our Hineynu healing tapestryproject was started in March2002. Our first tapestry panel
was completed, and beautifully sewn byLinda Hutkin-Slade, at the end of
September 2003, and used for the first time at one of ourFreilich Friday musical Shabbat Services. The impact ofstanding under this amazing work of art, created by ourTemple family, and reciting the Mi Shebeirach prayer forhealing, is very powerful, whether reciting the prayer foryourself or for someone you know who is in need ofhealing. It gives us a feeling of not only being connected toone another, but to the healing energy around and withinus. The squares are 10˝ x 10˝ pima cotton and various artmedium are used to create each piece. They are painted,embroidered, done in needlepoint, stitchery, fabric, justabout anything, and 18 individual squares make up eachpanel. In each of the panels, the squares are unique andhave special meaning to the artist who made it. In the yearssince 2002, we have added 4 more panels, including severalmade in Israel by our sister Kibbutz, Kibbutz Ruhama. Ournewest addition is a beautiful panel made by our preschoolchildren, with the help of their teachers.
This is a project that is on-going and the tapestry willcontinue to grow. If you would like to make a square,contact Sheryl Baron through the Temple office, to pick upa packet with instructions and fabric.
Our final Freilich Friday Shabbat with Cantor Robbinswlll be held on May 21, 2010. If you haven’t attended oneof these services, join us for a very meaningful experienceand come stand under the tapestry to feel the love, caringand thought that was put into each square that makes upthe panels.

Our incrediblytalented teen band Kavannah will beleading Shabbat services that eveningin the sanctuary. We encourage theentire congregation to sing andcelebrate with us as we alsoacknowledge our seniors in high schoolwho have been leaders here. SarahEdelstein, Ari Goodman, Alex Klarer,and Justin Kohlberg will be honoredwith the Teen Leadership Award for theiryears of servicte to our community. It isalways a special evening and with thesounds of our 13 piece band playing, itwill surely lift your spirits.
Later that weekend on Sunday, May 16our social action youth group the TikkunProject will be holding their elections fornext year’s leadership board. This eventwill be held from 2:00–4:00pm and isopen to all current 6–12 graders withboard positions open to next year’s7–12 graders.
Later that week on Thursday, May 20our high school social temple youthgroup Olim will be holding its annualboard elections from 6:00–8:00pm. Thisis open to current 8–12 graders with 10board positions to be filled that eveningfor next year’s leadership board. These
leadership positions offer our youth theopportunity to develop importantleadership skills while working in ateam setting. Great skills, friendships,fun, and community building are justsome of the benefits to being a leader atTemple Solel. All youth interested inrunning for board must both be at theelections and meet with me at least aweek before the election.

June will also offer opportunitiesfor leadership as Temple Solel starts its second decade of Camp Simcha!I encourage our 9–12 graders as well as our college students to apply tobecome either counselors-in-training
(9–10 grade), counselors (10–12), orhead counselors (college students). It isa great opportunity to land a summerjob that will be enjoyable and a chanceto build valuable skills all while makinga tremendous difference in the lives ofchildren. As a sidenote of interest, in Marchmy wife and I flew up to Portland tocelebrate the wedding of Ariel Cohnwho grew up at Temple Solel. She wasa founding member of Kavannah 11years ago and flew in last year tocelebrate Kavannah’s 10 yearanniversary. I was one of her seventhgrade teachers as Temple Solel and itwas a great honor to not only be therefor her wedding but to also sign herketubah ( Jewish marriage contract) forher. I know the temple communitywishes Ariel and her groom Aaron wellin their union. The lasting differencethat our youth community makes inthe lives of those who participate isquite extraordinary. I encourage all ofour youth to take advantage of themyriad of ways to get involved in our community.

Yahrzeit Plaques &
Tree of Life Leaves Available
The Yahrzeit wall plaques can be ordered through the Temple office. These are permanentplaques that are lit on the Shabbat, closest to the Hebrew anniversary of your loved one’s date of death. A donation of $450 is required for each name and date. All Yahrzeit plaques can be ordered by written request at any time and will be hung according to the date received.
In addition, to commemorate joyous occasions, the Tree of Life leaves are available. Donations of $250 and $300 are required. For more information, call Robin Rubin at the Temple office,(760) 436-0654.
