Serving Up Summer LunchRemember the joy of freedom that came with those glorious first days of a brand new summer vacation? That same happy spirit took hold on Friday, June 15, at The Open Door’s Summer Lunch Kick-Off Picnic.

Under sunny skies and picnic tents, volunteers and staff cooked up a healthy and festive barbecue to feed 120 children in their Riverdale Park neighborhood. Kids lined up for grilled hamburgers and hot dogs served on whole-wheat rolls, fresh veggie sticks, and ripe slices of juicy watermelon.

“The Open Door connects people to good food,”said Julie LaFontaine, The Open Door’s executive director. “Summer Lunch is important to growing healthy minds and bodies.”

When children weren’t munching on delicious food, they raced through the colorful corridors of an inflatable obstacle course and hip-hopped with DJ Johnny K to the beat of Pure Energy Entertainment’s musical stream while The Open Door’s four summer interns painted happy faces with everything from butterflies and hearts, to mustaches and bananas.

Food education found a place on the menu with the interactive Good Food Farm. Manned by volunteer and School Committee member, Val Gilman, and her son Jared, kids quickly learned how to pick apples, dig for potatoes and gather eggs.

With the help of Project Bread and Share Our Strength, The Open Door has included table-top salad bars at three of its Summer Lunch sites this year so kids can choose the fruits and vegetables they pile on their plates.

Perfect Storms and brutal Nor’easters are no strangers to Gloucester— nor are the power failures that often accompany them. For most residents, an outage poses an annoying inconvenience, but for Cape Ann’s most vulnerable it can mean the difference between eating and going hungry.

Thanks to private grant funding and an interest-free public facility loan from Gloucester’s Community Development Block Grant division, The Open Door contracted with Roy Spittle Associates last spring for the installation of a natural gas powered, commercial-grade generator at its Emerson Avenue building.

Now, in case of a major power disruption, The Open Door is positioned to act as an emergency center for the community.
