Dear Parents, Last week we chose to run an article on the front page of Silver Leaves that celebrated a Nobel Prize recipient who had attended a Waldorf school. One of the (many) questions we are asked when we have enquiries about Steiner education is “what happens if my child wants to study at University?” This Thursday and Friday evening the Class 12 Students at Perth Waldorf School are presenting their Projects, I would encourage parents to attend and see first-hand the extraordinary work the students will be presenting. Some of the students are ex-Silver Tree and have continued their Steiner education at Perth Waldorf School. The presentations, along with the option to sit a University Entrance Exam offers the students an alternative pathway into a range of university courses. I found it interesting, and somewhat inspiring, that the Nobel Prize winner credits his instrumental music teacher with providing him with the skills and striving needed to apply himself to learning endeavours, enabling him to become a leader in his field. Of course there are many other successful Waldorf school graduates worldwide and if you are interested in checking these out please view the lists at http://thewaldorfs.waldorf.net/index.html It has been such a fulfilling start to our final term of 2013 with the Early Childhood being held so beautifully by the rhythms of the Kindy classes and with Primary classes commencing Main Lessons in the fascinating worlds of Persia, Hebrew stories, creative writing and rehearsing class plays. NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM _________________________________________________________________________________ EARLY CHILDHOOD CHATTER

Thank you to all the parents who helped us celebrate the arrival of spring at our Spring Festival. Everyone had a wonderful time and the children looked beautiful in their flower garlands.

Angels down to me are bending;

Always with me, they are ever caring, tending, And around me, woven out of love, their flowing mantle they are lending.

Angels I am their child. From out their house of light my soul has wended.

Born of the sun, my seed upon the earth descended. Good fruit it must bring forth before my life is ended.

KOORRDJENANGIN NEWS

What a wonderful first week back at school it has been. As part of our Hebrew Stories main lesson, the class has celebrated the Hebrew festival of Sukkoth, which takes place around this time of year. Traditionally, Sukkoth (Hebrew for 'booth') is celebrated by families building a booth or shelter in their backyard in which they eat their meals for 7 days and celebrate together. The class spent time looking for a suitable place in the bush and found a magnificent tree in which to build the shelter around. We then spent two days building a shelter underneath the tree, using sticks and greenery from our surrounds. The class worked with enthusiasm and creativity and successfully built a stable structure that not only seats the whole class comfortably, but even allowed for our special guests the Wayfarer class to sit in as well! As part of the Sukkoth tradition, which encourages families and neighbours to share meals in their shelters, the Wayfarers shared Challah bread with us that the class had baked that day with the help of Di Hill. With the sun streaming through the branches of our shelter situated on an elevated paddock, 50 children sat together eating their delicious Challah bread and talking about this special Hebrew festival. We also had our first Mum's Day this week, a special day for Mums to speak about their interests and passions, which will take place every Friday morning in Term 4. Sonya Crowther, mother of Adeline and Ruby, spoke to the class about her past job as an airline stewardess and inspired us all with her descriptions of life on an airplane and the genuine passion she displayed for every aspect of her job, including Japanese translation. Thank you Sonya for your visit and the joy you conveyed about your work; it was a privilege listening to you. Anna Brindal

Tilda Swinton supportive of private Steiner schools Tilda Swinton. Picture: AP

Published 01/10/2013 The Scotsman

TILDA Swinton today defended parents’ rights to opt out of state education in favour of the Steiner Waldorf education system which her own twin kids attend.

The Oscar-winning star, who lives in Nairn, said an Oxford professor had told her that state education was so under question the top university “longed” for Steiner pupils who still have a love for learning.

Swinton, 52, spoke out as she mixed with teachers, pupils and visitors at an open day for the Moray Steiner School and the recently-opened Drumduan Upper School in Forres, Moray.

Page 5: News for the Silver Tree Steiner School Community · 23/10/2013  · Wednesday 22nd October 2013 34 Term 4 Dates 14th October - 17th December Thurs 7th November Wayfarers Parent Evening

ARTICLE Cont….

Ms Swinton, 52, is a trustee of both schools and a co-founder of Drumduan. Xavier and Honor, her 15-year-old children with artist John Byrne, are pupils at Drumduan.

The London-born actress said promoting the schools, which take a holistic approach to education, is her only current project, adding that there was “a misunderstanding” about Steiner education as people think it’s ‘flaky’ or ‘woolly’.

Ms Swinton, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress in 2008 for her performance as a ruthless corporate attorney in the legal thriller ‘Michael Clayton’, said: “When I went into the Steiner school for the first time, I was struck not only by the trusting and familial atmosphere for younger children, but mainly by older children, because I had never walked into a school before where teenagers had been so welcoming and self-possessed and kind.”

“The older children play with and care for the younger children. There is, very often, a misunderstanding about Steiner education, because of the emphasis on the arts, and the children seem so carefree. A misunderstanding that the education might be ‘woolly’ or ‘flaky’.

“As my children go through education, I am continually more impressed by how rigorous and engaged all the learning is.”

She added: “I heard of a student who got a double first in physics from Edinburgh University, who said that all he was ever interested in was science and if he had an education other than Steiner then he would have been another ‘geek’ - unable to do anything other than his subject.”

“But through the Steiner system he had to learn other crafts. The Steiner had nurtured him to become a fully functional person.”

The actress said how top universities valued the love of learning instilled in pupils of the alternative system.

She said: “The new upper school, which has only recently started here, is largely inspired by the extraordinary example of the acorn school in Stroud which, under the auspices of whose founder, Graeme Whiting, has twenty years experience of achieving a 100 per cent success rate in placing students at universities, including Oxford and Cambridge without involving state exams at any point on the educational journey.”

Ms Swinton cut short promotion of her 2011 Oscar bid ‘We Need to talk about Kevin’ to do a cleaning shift at the Moray Steiner School.

The mum-of-two jetted back from Spain to scrub floors and wash windows at the Forres school. Taking her role at the school very seriously, she said at the time: “There is a regular rota. In order to keep the fees down it’s necessary for parents to take part in cleaning the school on a regular basis.”

Steiner schools are based on the philosophy of Austrian philosopher Rudolph Steiner who founded the first in Germany in 1919.

There are now 1026 independent Steiner schools across 60 countries. The schools concentrate on educating the “whole child” with a strong emphasis on creativity.

The educational philosophy’s overarching goal is to develop free, morally responsible, and integrated individuals equipped with a high degree of social competence.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK ________________________________________________________________________________ Please email Emma Ritchie your favourite recipes for publication in Silver Leaves at [email protected]

Breakfast Apple Crumble

4 apples, cored and quartered

4 medjool dates, seeds removed

Crumble Ingredients 1 heaped cup of walnuts

50 grams of unsalted butter chopped into small pieces or coconut oil 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Pulse the crumble ingredients in your blender or food processor and pulse until you have a nice crumbly mix, Be sure to leave some chunky bits, you want plenty of texture. Place this mixture in a bowl. Place the apples and dates in your food processor or blender and pulse until finely chopped. Divide the apple mixture between four ramekins, top with the crumble mixture, bake in the oven for 30 minutes or until nicely golden. I like to make large batches in advance. In this case just spread out the mixture onto a baking tray or dish, cool, seal and serve for multiple breakfasts, snacks or dessert. Serve alone or with milk, yogurt, fruit.
