separation IL was necessary to use about 2.000 pounds, or nearly one ton, of direct pulling force. To visualize what this weight would mean, seven girls, f rom the Spalding organization, stood on a plat form and were hoisted in the air, their plat-form held only by the wood head of a club, as can be seen in the photograph.

The identical wood club, used in l i f t ing the seven girls, had been tested in the Universal Testing machine shown to the le f t to see what pressure would crack the persimmon wood head. When this pres-sure had reached 10.000 pounds, or the equivalent of the head being run over by a fre ight car, a photograph was taken. When the club was removed f rom the machine and examined it was found to be in playable condition and was then used to lift the girls.

Zaun Conducts Tests On Southern Turf

Chas, W. Zaun, who has f o r the past 25 years been in the golf course and lawn equipment business in the south, is now conducting experiments with rare Ber-muda and bent grasses.

These experiments are similar to those conducted by the Tl f ton (Ga. ) Agr icul -

tural Experiment Station, as well as the Florida Experiment Station, t ry ing to de-velop better golf course greens in the south.

Zaun is also experimenting with Illahee Fescue and other grasses tn hope of find-ing a grass more suitable f o r winter golf greens than rye grass has heen in the past

These experimental plots are located next to the Zaun Equipment Co. display room. 1090 Edgewood Avenue, Jackson-ville, Fla. In the accompanying Illustra-tion Zaun is explaining some of the fine points of these grasses to A. Ft. Jackson. Supt, of the San Jose CC, The grasses in various plots are in plots 1 and 2, Zaun Bermuda, a discovery of his own which is the finest texture of Bermuda he says he has seen; in plot 1 is Zaun Bermuda and Astoria Bent seeded in f o r winter greens,

In plot 2 Is Zaun Bermuda seeded in Illa-hee Fescue for winter putting.

Plot 3, a discovery of D, A Hall of Savannah, Ga.. shows the Hall Bermuda which has been in use on the Savannah course for years. It is a very One strand of Bermuda deep rooted dense turf and practically frost resistant. This plot is seeded in Highland Bent for winter greens.

Plot 4 contains the Ti f ton Agricultural Experiment station East Lake Bermuda grass, an exceptionally fine texture of Ber-muda. This plot is seeded In Seaside Bent grass for winter putting greens.

Plot 5 is a complete seeding of Illahee Fescue with no Bermuda base Zaun says you will hear a great deal about Illahee Fescue for greens and fa i rways in the south and he is expecting some very fine results f rom this experiment.

Plot 6 contains T i f ton 57 Bermuda, also developed by the Ti f ton Station. I t is a very dense deep-rooted strand of Bermuda showing great possibilities. This plot Is seeded in rye for winter putting green surface.

Plot 7 also is T i f ton 57 Bermuda. It is seeded in Kentucky Blue Grass and Red Top for winter putting green surface.

These experimental plots have received much attention f rom golf course people. Zaun extends an invitation to all who are Interested In fine turf to visit these plots at any time. He g ives all inquirers full details of how these grasses have been eared for when and how planted, soil con-dition, ferti l ization, watering, etc..
