“Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know

that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

The first thing that comes to mind when we get into the month of September is Labor Day Weekend. Accord-

ing to the Department of Labor’s website (http://www.dol.gov/laborday/history.htm), “Labor Day, the first

Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic

achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have

made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” Below is the first Labor Day parade held on

September 5, 1882.

September is the month that our country celebrates the gift of labor with Labor Day weekend. At Advent, we

too celebrate the gift of Labor Day weekend, but we also take it another step by joining together throughout

the community of Augusta in serving our Lord through God’s Work, Our Hands weekend, September 12th and

13th.

Our service ministry has worked tirelessly arranging for ways in which we can use our labor to do God’s work

in this world. This year there will be chances to clean up, paint buildings, fill bags of rice, make sandwiches,

help with animals, and so much more. No matter your age, strength, or abilities, there are ways you too can

participate in serving our Lord through this church-wide endeavor.

Last year was our first year participating in God’s Work, Our Hands weekend, as seen in the picture. Please

help us to grow and build on last year’s event as we continue this annual service event. As we worship and

serve together, may we always share the grace and love of God with everyone we encounter for, in the Lord,

our Labor is not in vain.

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Jason and Pastor Andrea

Co-led by Pastor Andrea and Ginny Sweeton

Centered on DVD-based teaching from Beth Moore, Breath exam-ines the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The booklet features fill-in-the-blank outlines to use as you follow along with the video teaching as well as lined, blank pages for recording notes from each session. It also includes writings from Moore's daughter Melissa that takes readers deeper into the teaching. (6 sessions)

Service Ministry It’s coming! It’s coming! “God’s Work, Our Hands” September 12th and 13th. In preparation for the projects on Sunday, Sept. 13th, please gather up your plastic grocery bags and toiletries for bagging and get them to church by the 13th. We always are looking for donated eye glasses and costume jewelry, and we collect the aluminum pop tops and box tops for education. If you have ordered a bright yellow T-shirt for the nationwide volunteer day, they will be at the church Sunday, August 30th. The exact amount for each order is listed in the church office, and preferred method of payment is by check made out to Advent Lutheran. Saturday’s events are painting at Pendleton King Park (see Gary Lawrence), and cleaning the

Family Promise headquarters (see Nancy Tokarska). The project at the Hu-mane Society was placed with Augusta Richmond County Animal Services. Details are posted on the church announcement board. Sunday, September 13th lunch will be hosted the Education and Youth Min-istries following our Fellowship Hall projects. Please sign up for the lunch so there will be a good head count. Sunday, September 13th will also be our quarterly Shepeard Blood Drive. Sign-up will also be on the announcement board.

Lots is going on in September and you are a vital part of it all. Come out and enjoy a weekend of worthy projects and fellowship. See you there! Volunteers who will be helping with registration for Angel Tree—there will be a brief meeting after church service in the library on September 13th. Next service ministry meeting is September 1st, 2:30pm at the church.
