Aliyah means “ascend.” In Jewish tradition it can refer to a number of things: It is when you are honored during a worship service, whether it is to say a blessing, read a part, open the Ark, or take care of the Torah scroll (to name a few examples). It is also the word used to denote the process of immigration to Israel. Although these honors include “going up” – up on the Bimah (pulpit) or up to Israel, sometimes the higher place is really not a place or physically higher, but a spiritual ascent. One of the changes we made in our new sanctuary is to recognize that it is physically difficult for some people to go up onto the Bimah. However, we still want to be able to honor people regardless of their physical limitations. We made it possible for people to be called “up” and receive an honor, yet stay on the ground level. In some ways it is a higher honor, when someone realizes that it was so important to us that they be honored, that we “moved mountains” (actually lecterns) to make it possible. After I graduated High School I spent a year in a leadership training program in Israel. I knew I wanted to live in Israel forever. I was obligated to come home and serve the Reform Movement, but I thought I would “make Aliyah” after college. I knew that it would be difficult, but I intended to try to serve in the IDF (Israeli Defense Force). Everyone does, and it seemed not only important for the protection of the country (I don’t think they would have put me – an “older” woman in a combat role, but I would have done something to help), but it seems important to the process of being a productive adult in Israeli society. I knew that I would be a “Lone Soldier” (Chayal Boded or Chaleyet Bodedet) This is what they call a soldier with no immediate relatives in the country. When you have a family in the country, you have a place to go on weekends or holidays (it is a small country and you do get to go home way more often than American military). You don’t have anyone to help you with outside things (like laundry or banking, etc.). Israel recognizes that this is a difficult status, so the Chayal Boded gets certain extra privileges (like help finding a place to live, extra stipend, extra time off to visit your family abroad, etc.) Obviously, I didn’t make Aliyah (although some people might say that when I moved down to Shreveport, it was a “higher calling”). With the situation so difficult in Israel these days I pray a lot for the safety of the citizens and the military. I noted that some of the first casualties were Lone Soldiers from the US. Being so far away and feeling helpless about what is going on, makes me feel alone: wanting to do what is right and helpful, but being too alone to make enough of a difference. We learned in recent Torah portions that some people need to live outside of the Promised Land, so that we can support those who are living there. We can help financially (see in the bulletin about “Stop the Sirens”). We can also help by speaking out against false accusations. Don’t lower yourself and let hate rule you. Let your higher self pray and work for peace. We can raise up our prayers and voices together for a higher purpose. Bivrakha, Rabbi Dr. Jana L. Aliyah means “ascend.” In Jewish tradition it can refer to a number of things: It is when you are honored during a worship service, whether it is to say a blessing, read a part, open the Ark, or take

care of the Torah scroll (to name a few examples).

Israel recognizes that this is a difficult status, so the Chayal Boded gets certain extra privileges (like help finding a place to live, extra stipend, extra time off to visit your family abroad, etc.)

Obviously, I didn’t make Aliyah (although some people might say that when I moved down to Shreveport, it was a “higher calling”).

Well, here we are in the “dog days of summer.” I hope all of

you are staying cool and wearing plenty of sunscreen. I have

just returned from yet another adventure. This time it was out

west. From a dude ranch in Montana to the Cheyenne Rodeo

and many stops in between. Don’t laugh. I don’t know how to

saddle a horse and barely know what side of the horse to

mount. Face the head, right? Anyway, the great outdoors was

calling. I hope all of you have the chance to slow down and reflect on the great

majesty of it all! The sights are truly spectacular and there is nothing more

inspiring than sky gazing on a clear night when all you can see is thousands

and thousands of stars. Several weeks ago the Rabbi spoke about getting away

and seeing and experiencing new things; however you can always come home

to YOUR Temple to experience new things.

As summer winds down I want to thank all of you who have participated in the

numerous activities held at B’nai Zion. In addition, your funds have allowed

children to attend Henry S. Jacobs summer camp through our scholarship

fund. We are also so grateful for the continued support of the renovation. Its

beauty only enhances our worship. We plan on recognizing all who

contributed to the project in the fall with the

dedication of the donor wall. Remember it is

never to late to donate!

As always, there is plenty happening at your

Temple. Please read the bulletin or check the

web site.

Stay tuned for more to come after school

starts early next month!

See you Friday nights.

From our Educator

We proudly use the ISJL Curriculum

If you recall my last bulletin message, it was all about “when I’m 64.” However, now I am 64, and I’m very focused on the choices I have to make each day meaningful. I’m focused on all those online articles about gratitude and mentoring young people and conveying values to my children and grandchildren. I’m focused on reading lists of “best books” and travel blogs about “places to visit.” I’m focused on registering for races that will keep me trained and preparing astoundingly fresh food that is both delicious and healthy. (Clarification: I’m not preparing the food myself, just finding the recipes and tips that Bill needs!) Surely you get the idea. But there’s another aspect to all of this recognition that more of my life is behind me than ahead. There’s the perspective that comes with having served as Education Director for more than 30 years and wondering what my legacy will be. (Don’t read too much into all of this – as far as I know, I’m healthy, and I’m not retiring yet.) There’s the desire to make the next few years ones in which I listen to people of all ages to find out what I can do to help them grow in learning about Judaism, embracing rituals of Judaism, and living with Jewish intentionality. Helping children become proud, knowledgeable, and confident Jews has been immensely gratifying, but now I want to do more to be sure that families as family units and adults of all ages have the opportunities to reflect on who they are and who they want to be. As a result, I intend to spend significant time this year talking to you about family education and adult education. There are exciting models for education in both spheres, and this summer I’m focused on how we might bring these models to our Jewish community. But the decision is not mine, nor even mine and the Rabbi’s. Much depends on what you want. I will share ideas, but before we can implement anything you will have to be a part of the conversation. That brings me back to the beginning of this article where I said that I’m focused on the choices I have – and that you have—to make our lives meaningful. As we approach the end of summer and the beginning of a new Jewish year in September, let’s pledge to live with intention, so that as we count birthdays, we also count contentment.

Following on the heels of June’s ISJL Conference, July brought us a visit from the Community Engagement Department of ISJL. Thanks to Malkie Schwartz of ISJL, Shalon Lewis of The Valencia Center (SPAR), Benjamin Maxey, and Curtis Joseph, who participated in a panel discussion about community service and volunteerism. As we return to Religious School and prepare for the High Holy Days, we will consider ways to make service an integral part of our program. We don’t need to abandon Mitzvah Day, but a day is not sufficient when we are engaged in the repair of the world, tikkun olam.

I am thrilled to tell you that our faculty is complete and that we will have our first faculty meeting and ISJL fellow visit on Wednesday, August 6. Abby Klionsky is our new fellow, coming to us after graduation from Princeton University. She was a History Intern at ISJL for a summer during college, and she loves to hike and cook. We look forward to welcoming her.

Religious School classes begin on Sunday, September 7. Prior to that event, I’ll attend the New CAJE Conference in Los Angeles August 10-13. I’ll be headed to workshops on engaging families and adults, as well as children, in the life of our synagogue and the life of our community. What a year lies ahead!

Fred Sklar JWV Post 581 of North Louisiana

The monthly Fred Sklar JWV Post meeting will be Sunday, August 10 at 5 PM. at Agudath Achim. Specific topics of conversation will be Post ‘do's and do not's,’ optional officer appointments, fund raising strategies, and membership recruitment. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

B’nai Zion Rally Sunday, August 24 with St. Paul’s. at 11 AM-1PM Our neighbors at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Southfield Road have a Rally at the end of every summer. After their worship service, they eat together, play together (with inflatable bouncy buildings for the kids, and softball games, etc.), and sign up for committees, projects, and classes. This year they have offered to let us play with them. We will provide a lunch for the Jewish community. We will have opportunities to sign up for things we will be doing this year. We can also see if we can cooperate on any of their projects. For example, if they have a way of helping to feed the hungry (which they have had in the past) our community can help them. If they have people who want to help us with our Mitzvah projects, they can help us. We would like to try to have an end of summer celebration at B’nai Zion. You can stay on our property, and just celebrate with us, or you can meet new people and see if you want to help them.

Toward the end of August a list of Blessers for fall through spring will arrive in your mail. Please call me, Harriette Glazer (797-4333) or Karen in our office (861-2122) if there is a particular Friday night that you would like to bless the candles or wine at the beginning of Shabbat services: maybe on your birthday, anniversary or a yahrzeit you are observing. Any time is a good time! Consider leading the blessings to be an honor that you can give yourself! We are all family at B'nai Zion; so no one should feel nervous about being a Shabbat blesser. You may choose to read in English and Hebrew or in English only. Oneg Shabbat information will also be included in your mail. Blessers are not required to provide Oneg Shabbat refreshments.

Thanks! Harriette Glazer

Although we pray that the attacks in Israel will have ended by the time this newsletter reaches your mailbox, many people have been asking what they can do to help. The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) has joined with many other Jewish organizations: the JFNA (Jewish Federations of North America), The Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, World ORT, Israel Trauma Coalition, and United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism — to help meet the needs of Israelis under fire, by helping. to raise and distribute funds to provide emergency aid and alleviate the pain and suffering of our Israeli brothers and sisters.

At times such as these we especially feel connected to our people. If you choose to donate funds to this critical joint effort, you can submit donations to the B’nai Zion or Jewish Federation offices, and we will forward the money to Stop the Sirens, or you can make a donation directly on their secure websites: www.jewishfederations.org http://urj.org/israel/

The office is preparing the new Yizkor/Memorial book for the year 5775. Be sure that when you receive your letter you respond quickly so your loved ones can be properly honored and remembered.

We are also trying to select people to honor with reading and non-reading parts for the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. We would love to include everyone, but would like to give you the honor that you prefer. Please speak to the Rabbi if there is a particular part you would like, or would not like. Rabbi Jana would love to work with you to help you prepare for English or Hebrew reading parts or review the process for non-reading parts.

Make My Day: Change of Schedule

Note the Summer office hours will continue to be from 9:00 AM to noon Monday through Friday. We will resume our extended hours after Labor Day.

The office will be closed for Labor Day, Monday, September 1.

Please consider bringing the following items to B’nai Zion to help our local schools: Campbells labels Box Tops for Education labels Community Coffee/Tea labels Used printer cartridges

We will distribute them for our children to take to their schools, where the school will get credit and sometimes money.

We are also collecting the pull tabs from drink cans.

For the Local Schools

We encourage children and parents to attend worship services. During services, children are often given honors like opening and closing the Ark, and saying the blessings for (and tearing and eating) the challah. We are thrilled that our new sanctuary has an Ark in our Ark that has huggable Torah “scrolls” so that our children can hold the Torah during services.

We also now have activity books that children can read during services. Some are geared toward very young children: with board book sturdy pages, and touch and feel pictures. Some are matching

page books, and others are learning Hebrew vocabulary books. You can find the books on the shelves in the foyer of the sanctuary near the stairs (near the Hebrew-opening prayer books and the kippot (yarmulkes). We are looking for other ideas that will encourage the children to love coming to services, and allow the parents to participate.

We can also try to arrange for baby sitters, if we have advanced notice (at least two days ahead of the service).

All of our families should be attending services when they can. We are proud to make our worship experiences welcoming to everyone.

For Children Who Attend Services

The choir will be practicing in preparation for the High Holy Days. If you would like to

sing for the holiday services, please contact the office and we will let you know when

the rehearsals are.

Tisha B’Av Movie: Orchestra of Exiles

Tisha B’Av is a day in Jewish history that commemorates many tragic events. Often the Jews were exiled from our homes and our homelands because of events that occurred on this day throughout the millennia.

This year at B’nai Zion we will commemorate the sad day by ending it on a note of hope and survival. We will watch the movie “Orchestra of Exiles.” Please join us 6 PM Tuesday, August 5 in the B’nai Zion Parlor.

A Film by Academy Award© Nominated Director Josh Aronson. The thrilling story of how one man helped save Europe’s premiere Jewish musicians from obliteration by the Nazis.

In the early 1930s Hitler began firing Jewish musicians across Europe. Overcoming extraordinary obstacles, renowned violinist Bronislaw Huberman moved these great musicians to Palestine and formed a symphony that would become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. With courage, resourcefulness and an entourage of allies including Arturo Toscanini and Albert Einstein, Huberman saved nearly 1000 Jews - and guaranteed the survival of Europe s musical heritage.

Featuring commentary by musical greats including Itzhak Perlman, Zubin Mehta and Joshua Bell, “Orchestra of Exiles” is a timeless tale of a brilliant young man coming of age, and the suspenseful chronicle of how his efforts impacted cultural history.

The reviews are wonderful for this movie. It is not rated (please note that there are scenes from the Holocaust), and it lasts 85 minutes. Most people who watch it, can’t wait to watch it again.

North Louisiana Jewish Federation

The North Louisiana Jewish Federation held its annual meeting Wednesday, July 16 with 45 members of the community in attendance. New officers were introduced. They are Curtis Joseph, President; Ricky Murov, Treasurer; and Sara Zweig, Secretary. Current members of the Board also include Rebecca Austin, Joe Badt, Jr. (Past President), Sandra Blate, Sandra Ginsburg, Sharon Goldman, Jodi Hyman, Sandy Katz, Adam Miller, Hollie Nash, Amy Quinn, Marion Weiss, and Rabbi Jana De Benedetti, ex officio.

At the meeting special recognition was made to those Board members who were going off the Board. They included: Gary Abrams, David Brainis, Abry Cahn and Berte Muslow. JNF Tree certificates recognizing trees planted in Israel through Hadassah, were presented to each of these individuals. Grove certificates were presented to Joe Badt, Jr. as the outgoing president, and to Susan Gross for her many years of service as the Executive Director of the organization.

Please note: to reach the new Executive Director Kathy Plante via e-mail through the Federation please use: [email protected]. This is a correction to what was previously distributed. The Federation phone number is still: 318-868-1200.

Kroger Rewards

An easy way for B’nai Zion to continue to receive hundreds of dollars each year from Kroger store purchases is by registering in its Community Rewards Program. In order to help to earn money for B’nai Zion you must register online by going to: www.krogercommunityrewards.com and enter B’nai Zion’s unique code number, 83728. If you do not have a computer, please come in or call the office and we will help register you for the program. We no longer can use the UPC code to register our purchases.

Another change is that Kroger will pay the bonus to our congregation quarterly instead of annually.

For the quarter 3/01/14 through 5/31/14 we received a check for $103.13 with 18 families registered. We look forward to being able to continue to report our earnings, and hope that everyone who shops at Kroger registers with B’nai Zion’s code.

Thank you for your help in this easy fundraising opportunity for B’nai Zion.
