Riding the Wind-DownOne look at the club calendar and you’ll know that the riding season is winding down. There are only a few official club events before the end of the year, and most of those aren’t actually riding events.
But it’s still the best time of the year for riding in the Southwest, and there are lots of unofficial rides taking advantage of what’s left of the warm weather.
I’ve spoken to riders making spon-taneous trips through the mountains, down south and over to Arizona. Our weather is still warm and sunny, and you can follow the changing of the leaves south through the state.
I’ve been in the Jemez almost every weekend in October, and it’s just gotten better and bet-ter. Peak has now moved into the Jemez River val-ley, so the time to ride it is now, before the color is all gone.
One measure of rid-ing conditions is the size of the crowd at Dawn’s on Sunday morning. In the Spring the parking lot was packed, with 70 or 80 riders drinking coffee and kick-ing tires. It’s been the same lately, with bikes squeezing cars out and providing a constant stream of singing engines and enthusiastic riders.
Many of those spontaneous club rides are originating in that parking lot. From
a quick spin up to Sandia Peak (which peaked a few weeks ago) to Jemez or Chama trips, if you’re looking for some-one to ride with Dawn’s is the place. It’s a great staging area, and everybody’s already congregated there – no organiza-tion required.
Dawn’s, of course, follows the Sunday breakfast at the El Camino. I’m a self-confessed late sleeper, so I can’t say what transpires there, but I suspect that plenty of rides originate there as well. The BMW crowd is notoriously early, so if you’d
prefer to get out and experience the brisk autumn-into-winter morning air I would suggest trying the breakfast as a launch point. Just bring the electrics.
My own riding starts heading south around this time of year. I can’t bear to put the bike away for the winter, so I scout out routes in more moderate climes. See you in the Monzanos…

write this, the weather is still drop dead gor-
geous and perfect for staying comfortable in your leathers or Cordura® riding suits with no electrics, insulating bulk, or mesh needed. Perfect!
We are having our next regular busi-ness meeting November 1st at Santa Fe BMW. With arrivals starting at 9 am, and the meeting around 9:30. Breakfast treats will be provided courtesy of Santa Fe BMW. Remember that green chile break-fast cornbread? I’m hoping that’s still on the menu.
Anyway, some of the business will be a detailed treasurer’s report which will show our rally income, etc. We will also discuss our 50/50 contribution to a worthy cause in the Sipapu/Taos area. If any of you have some new ideas on club donations, please bring your ideas for dis-cussion and then we’ll do some voting at the Progressive Breakfast.
Speaking of the Progressive Breakfast, we need volunteers to host the first (the coffee, hot drinks, and pastry so you can warm up and continue stop) and second (the breakfast burrito belt buster) stops for the 2009 event. It is usually in late January or early February, often on Super Bowl Sunday. I’m pleased to announce that Tom Volkmann and his lovely wife have already volunteered to host the third incredible desserts, election, and club meeting stop.
Pete has done a stellar job of lining up a Christmas Party we won’t soon forget, so he’ll be giving us a more complete report on that. This is the one event where everyone can get back their dues or even double back in food, so mark your calendar for December 14th, 5 pm.
Another order of business will be to get some nominations for the 2009 club officers. At this point, Mark Davis has indicated he will continue to shepherd our

Our Most Valuable Volunteers (MVV) – Dave editing the Shaft, TC riding herd on the web site, Susie managing activi-ties, Lynn for membership services – all will serve in those positions for “life”! (Of course, someone from that group of MVV’s may ascend to higher office…) But as I ride my buggy into the sunset, we will need to nominate people for president and vice-president (Pete still has to evaluate his situation, so stay tuned). Want to serve as an officer or task group leader? Speak up at the meeting!
FYI, I will be appointing myself as an unofficial “historian” for the club in the coming months. I have this idea of gathering stories and information about the found-ers of the club and how it all came about that summer many years ago. Fortunately, we have a number of people who have been with the club for all those years who can inform me and provide contacts.
A big item on the agenda will be to turn in your 2008 Riding Challenge forms so we can see who our Leather and Iron Butts are in the club (the revised official closing date of the Challenge is November 1st). If you’re not at the meeting, just be sure I get your form before Thanksgiving. With our finan-cially successful rally this year, the prizes should be nice.
And, of course, there may be other items of business and interest that you can bring to the attention of the club, so be there for the meet-ing. See you out on those country roads.
