================================================= Upcoming Ride Suggestions: Solar Eclipse-August 21, 2017

Do you know where you are going to see the only total solar eclipse in Upcountry, South Carolina this century? Here

are some great options:

Chattooga Belle Farm- located in Long Creek, the farm lies directly in the "path of totality." With its already

breathtaking vista views, this will be the perfect place to witness this event.

Duke's World of Energy "For many this is a once-in-lifetime event," said Chris Rimel, World of Energy manager.

"The eclipse fits well into the World of Energy's education mission - we're inviting students from across the

Upcountry to watch the eclipse from the World of Energy's three-acre front lawn."

Roper Mountain Science Center will have Eclipse Extravaganza special hours 10am-5pm Saturday, Sunday, Monday.

There will be full dome shows in the new T.C. Hooper Planetarium along with programs on safe viewing of the

eclipse. Special observation sites with Astronomers assisting visitors on Monday.

Anderson County Total Solar Eclipse Viewing Party Experience the eclipse from the shores of Lake Hartwell. Green

Pond's unobstructed viewshed is to the Southwest, where the eclipse will occur. There will be an astronomer on-

site to provide information and answer questions.

Jocasee Lake Tours has two tour options. You'll visit some waterfalls on the way to viewing the eclipse from the

boat, from the shore, or in the lake on a floatie!

Clemson University- Astrophysicists and other eclipse experts will be available to answer questions about viewing

the eclipse safely, demonstrate the special alignment that allows eclipses to occur and discuss what new knowledge

astronomers hope to gain about the sun during this eclipse.

Southern Wesleyan University is welcoming the public to its Central campus to view the solar eclipse. The

university will give out special protective viewers to the first 3,000 visitors and there will be telescopes set up

especially for the viewing, along with a live feed on the large video scoreboard at the track for safe viewing by

small children.

The next coast-to-coast total solar eclipse won't happen again until August 12, 2045, and you'll have to wait until

2078 to see it again in South Carolina. Don't miss this event!

A few words from Your ACD’s/Ride Educator… How Hot is Too Hot?

Well it seems that we've already arrived in the second half of 2017, and with it has come the summer heat.

I don't mind riding in the cold. As long as I've got my heated riding gear, I can ride comfortably down to

freezing (I don't ride below freezing for safety reasons).

The heat is another thing altogether. I'm an ATTGATT (all the gear, all the time) guy, so riding in summer

heat can be a mite uncomfortable, to say the least. Not to mention that heat can be deadly - riding in air

above your body temperature, with the wind stripping away the cooling effects of your perspiration is a good

way to get heat stroke, as the air actually heats you up instead of cooling you down. Your body goes into

full-on survival mode, perspiring for all it's worth, and soon you're dehydrated as well: a lethal combination.

That's why wearing gear in summer heat is so important - to allow your body's perspiration to actually have

some cooling effect.

With age comes less tolerance to heat as well. Heat that we could shrug off as a teenager might be

debilitating at a more "experienced" age. This is something we need to take into account.

So how do you manage riding in the summer heat, particularly in our southern states? Personally, I use a

phase change cooling vest, which I bring along with me anytime I expect temperature higher than upper

80's. In the 90's it makes the ride comfortable - in the 100's and above, it makes the ride survivable.

User coolrogue1 (no, really!) grew up riding year around in the Phoenix, Arizona metro area and it didn't

bother him, however now a few years on he finds he can't take the excessive heat anymore. What are your

personal heat limits, and what techniques or gear do you use to mitigate the hot temperatures? Read what

others had to say: How hot does it have to be before you won't ride?

================================================= Repeated Metzler Tire Failures

User Winger76 was riding down the highway on his 1996 GL1500 at 70 mph, and suddenly heard, "THWAP

THWAP THWAP" coming from his rear tire. Thankfully the tire held together as he pulled over. He looked

at disbelief at his Metzeler Marathon 880 tire, with only 2500 miles on it, pictured below. The tire tread

had delaminated and separated from the carcass.

Now this could be accepted perhaps as an isolated incident...except

that it's not. This is the third Metzeler tire he has had fail in the

same way in four years!

Other users chimed in with stories of similar failures with Metzeler

ME880 tires on their GL1500's, including a reference to a Wing

World article from 2008 demonstrating the exact same problem!

One user called Metzeler to report the issue, and was told that if he

felt that there was a safety issue to report it to the NHTSA (which

could force a recall), which is exactly what he did. This is just the sort of thing that the NHTSA needs to

know about.

Do you have Metzeler tires on your GL1500? Have you had a failure with Metzeler ME880 tires? Post your

experiences on our thread: Do Not Purchase Metzeler Tires!

================================================= Treasurers Report: SCHOOL SUPPLIES DONATION

We had another great year for our Chapter J annual fundraiser to

purchase School Supplies for Towns and Union County Schools. We even

surpassed our donations from last year. Thanks to all who participated.

We made $195.01 at the April Fool’s Day Chinese and Silent Auctions. An

additional $362.92 was donated by Chapter J members in June and July 2017

bringing the grand total to $557.93. School supplies were purchased for

Primary, Elementary, Junior and High Schools located in Towns and Union Counties.

Towns County distributes their donated school supplies by having a School Supply Bash which is

held at the GA Mountain Fairgrounds on August 1 and also at each school’s Open House. Families

complete an application and items are distributed according to each student’s school supply list.

Union County distributes their donated school supplies by teachers referring students in need.

This takes place at each school’s Open House and also throughout the year.

Both Towns and Union Counties schools are very appreciative of Chapter J’s generous donations.

================================================= MOTORIST AWARENESS: Several chapters just held their annual rest stop Safety Break for Bike Week on Interstate

75, and we feel this is a good time to remind you about a very important aspect of GWRRA. Did you

know that GWRRA is designated by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(4)(c) Not-for-Profit

organization under Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code of 1959? Under this section of the IRS code,

GWRRA chapters do not have to pay income taxes. However, we are required to “educate” about

motorcycle safety. Each chapter must provide education to its members and to the public as well.

Therefore, Rider Education and Motorist Awareness are very important. This is why the checking

accounts are now combined in one account under one EIN number, so the account can be shown as

disbursing funds on safety activities and rider education. If Rider Education and Motorist Awareness

can raise funds to add to the chapter that is great, but the chapter should not omit Rider Education or

Motorist Awareness because no specific funds are contributed. This is why we have safety talks and

training. This is why we are not only a social club. If we do not follow the IRS requirements, we could

lose our status with IRS.

This does not mean that the funds cannot be used for other purposes such as door prizes, fun

days and Christmas parties. We know you have to run the chapter meetings. However, status under IRS

requires us to educate members and the public in motorcycle safety and motorist awareness, and

chapter funds should be being spent for this function as well.

We ask that all Rider Educators and Motorist Awareness Ambassadors work with the chapter

Team to coordinate and provide funding for these safety activities. We do realize that some chapters

are small and cannot do much. Those Chapter may want to coordinate with another chapter to help them

share the expenses. Do what you can with what you have.

By the way, Motorist Awareness can be done anytime, not just on Bike Week. Put you heads

together and come up with ideas. Bob and Karla Greer are your new District Motorist Awareness

Coordinators and would be glad to work with you on ideas for teaching safety.

================================================= RIDE TO BARBER MUSEUM

July 19 & July 20, 2017

Once again, Chapter GA-J had a group of members interested in visiting one of America's

finest motorcycle museums, located only 220 miles away in suburban Birmingham, Alabama. So,

on a sunny Wednesday morning we had 3 bikes and two trikes with 7 riders departing from

Blairsville to join up with two more trikes and riders at Notley Dam Road. The group included

Nick & Sandy George, Dutch Kryder, John Roberts, Dick Schmidt, Charles Parker, Roger &

Dottie LeRoy and Glen Gottlieb (a friend of Roger & Dottie's).

The ride took us on Hwy. 76 through Blue Ridge and East Ellijay where we picked up Hwy. 136

taking us west to the Rome area. With the temperature going into the 90's, we had one short

stop before going to our lunch stop just north of Rome. Following lunch, we rode around Rome

and onto Hwy. 20 west taking us into Alabama, across Weiss Lake to the village of Centre where

we picked up Hwy. 411. This highway, going southwest, takes us all the way to Leeds, AL where

the Barber Museum is located. We had one more rest stop before arriving in Leeds to get

cooled off and get out of the heat now reading 93 degrees.

Arriving at the motel allowed us to get cool in the AC as well as some folks took advantage of

the swimming pool. Dinner that evening was at the local Cracker Barrel. After dinner, some of us

played our favorite traveling game - '99' - others headed for their rooms.

Breakfast was at the motel and we had plenty of time before the museum opened as they

were on Central Time Zone. So, we took advantage of the time difference and rode on a 50 mile

trail that took us on a very scenic and curvy road that also crossed a railroad ten times

(according to Dick's count). Returning to the motel, we fueled the bikes and then rode to the

Barber Museum some 4.5 miles from the motel.

For those of us that have visited the museum before we are always amazed at the changes,

expansion, new exhibits, and attention to detail that a return gives us a feeling of being there

for the very first time. For the first time visitor there is that feeling of awe as they take in

the vastness of the 5 stories of display area with motorcycles, cars, boats, outboard engines

that seems endless. With over 1,500 motorcycles, one cannot begin to accept the sense that we

have seen it all. Every displayed item has a description plaque identifying its history or

uniqueness. After reading a few of these plaques, the visitor realizes Mr. Barber has truly

assembled a collection of vehicles that are '...one of a kind'. Our group visit lasted about 3

hours and then everyone wanted to get off their feet and REST.

Exiting the museum, we quickly discovered the second day of our trip was going to be a hot as

the first day. Temperatures were already in the 90's as we rode to a nearby barbecue

restaurant for lunch. After lunch, we got onto Interstate 20 toward Atlanta. About 30 minutes

into the ride we saw rain ahead of us and we pulled into a gas station to get under cover. The

rain was light and some of us decided to put on complete rain suits, others partial rain suits and

Page 11: News From The Mountain Blue J’s Nestchapterj.gwrra-ga.com/ewExternalFiles/August17.pdf · 2020. 3. 7. · Gary's Hobbie Shop Inc McDonough, GA 770-914-0407 ===== RIDE SAFE‼ To

11

others no rain suits. Getting back on the interstate highway, we soon were riding in a total

downpour. We were in and out of the rain for about 50 miles. Taking the exit at Douglasville, we

rode Hwy. 92 around the west side of Atlanta to Interstate 575 at Woodstock. In Dallas we

stopped for fuel and those with rain suits removed them so everyone was fairly dry by the time

they reached home.

Once we were on Hwy. 575, we made one last stop in Canton. John left us to take Hwy. 53

east at Jasper. Then Dutch left us to take Hwy. 60 north of Blue Ridge. Dick and Charles left us

at Queen's Gap. Roger & Dottie left the group in Blairsville. Nick, Sandy and Glen rode to their

homes in Young Harris and Hiawassee respectively. Even with the rain encounter, it was a fun

two days and the Barber Motorcycle Museum never fails to enrich our excitement over the art

of the motorcycle.
