Remembering Claude Abernethy

Long-time board member Claude Abernethy passed away in July. Mr. Abernethy was elected to the Sipe’s board in February of 1956 at the fourteenth annual board meeting. He served actively

for almost fifty years until he was voted to board member emeritus status in 2005. While Mr. Abernethy’s services on the board were many—ranging from signing checks to serving as committee member, treasurer, and vice-chair—perhaps his most valuable contribution to Sipe’s was his long-term dedication and loyalty to the mission of the home. “Claude’s was a different sort of board service,” Sipe’s president Brian Phelps reflects. “He joined our board before rotating board membership became fashionable; consequently, he (and other board members of the time) were more intimately involved with the home’s operation and extremely invested in its mission.”A Davidson College and Harvard University educated businessman, Mr. Abernethy oversaw many changes in children, programs, staff, budgets, and spending at Sipe’s. Ironically though, the minutes of his early board meetings show that many of the issues he and his fellow board members dealt with were similar to those of today: facility repairs, program enhancements, lack of money, and concern over the quality of care.“For so many years, Claude was a Sipe’s mainstay, helping to chart our course,” says Mr. Phelps. “His presence here and in our wider community will be sorely missed.”

Sipe’s Achieves COA ReaccreditationAfter eighteen months of preparation -- which included compiling documents, reviewing and revising policies, restructuring and reanimating committees, responding to countless standards, and hosting a site visit -- Sipe’s was reaccredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) for another four years.

“This is a big deal for us,” says Sipe’s president Brian Phelps. “Since our last reaccreditation, the programs, clients, and staff have changed drastically, as well as the COA standards themselves. We all worked hard for this.”

The comprehensive preparations involved everything and everyone at Sipe’s. No stone was left unturned, from the policy and procedure manual to the emergency exit signs to the children’s records to the horse medicine to the bookkeeping procedures to the recycle bin.

“Everyone pitched in and made this reaccreditation possible,” says Mr. Phelps. “Our entire staff and board put forth a conscientious effort to take care of countless details, and their dedication paid off.”

Sipe’s was first accredited by COA in 2001; reaccreditation occurs every four years. COA accreditation covers the agency as a whole as well as providing specific program standards. With this reaccreditation, COA affirms that Sipe’s agency-wide practices as well as the day treatment and early childhood programs are meeting national standards.

Comments from COA’s Final Accreditation Report include the following:• Early childcare and development program is very well organized to meet the daily

needs of the children…• Well developed and thorough handbook outlining clients rights…• Staff receives general training and program specific training to ensure that they are

well versed in meeting the ongoing needs of the families and children…• Classrooms are well equipped with various types of therapeutic and educational

materials…• Financials in good order.• Board members very engaged.• Well maintained grounds and buildings for the clients.

Founded in 1977, COA is an independent not-for-profit international accreditor of the full continuum of community-based behavioral health care and human service organizations. Today, over 1800 organizations are either COA accredited or are in the process of seeking accreditation. These organizations serve over seven million vulnerable individuals each year. Sipe’s is pleased to be one of those accredited organizations.

Greg Suddreth Wants to be a DoctorAfter eight years at Sipe’s Orchard Home, clinical supervisor Greg Suddreth is entering a doctoral program at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. In order to accept a graduate assistantship at the university, he will leave Sipe’s in August.

In 2001, Greg began at Sipe’s as a counselor, first in Bumgarner Cottage and later in Odom Cottage, working with the teenage boys who lived on campus. A year later, when the Tyndall Center opened for preschool day treatment, Greg moved into that program as a classroom teacher. Greg has been the clinical supervisor of that program for about three years.

Greg arrived at Sipe’s with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and business. His work experience then, as he says, was “as close to counseling in the business world” as he could get, having worked with two staffing companies helping people prepare for and find suitable employment. While at Sipe’s, Greg completed a master’s degree in counseling from Appalachian State University.

Greg says that his work at Sipe’s has solidified the professional course he is on. This was his first immersion into work with families, parents, and children. Along with counseling skills, he is now well versed in treatment planning, documentation, the clinical language, and the legislative process surrounding mental health care.

“The more I’ve learned, the more I’ve been fueled to continue learning,” Greg says. The children and staff will miss him but wish him well on his new endeavors.

Bowman Cottage has been a satellite building for Hickory’s Cognitive Connection for about a year. One of their services for young adults is an intern program. With the guidance of Sipe’s maintenance supervisor, Steve Cline, Cognitive Connection interns recently painted the exterior doors, woodwork, and shutters on Bowman and other Sipe’s buildings, helping the campus look a little sharper.

So Many Papers…Brian L. Phelps, PresidentSipe’s was recently audited by the USDA’s Summer Food Program which reimburses us for a portion of our summertime food cost. I watched the auditor looking through the stacks of documents required to feed a child, and I thought about the reams of paper required to care for a child, at least here at Sipe’s.I suppose most businesses have their share of paperwork to contend with. At Sipe’s, documents come in daily, weekly, monthly, and annual varieties, and they deal with everything from individual children to our entire agency.Off the top of my head I thought of the following collections of papers:

MenusMeal CountsPoliciesBudgetsLesson plansProgress notesIncident reportsTraining recordsReceiptsCheck requestsBills

We operate in a world of regulations, and we need all these papers so we can prove what we do or what we need or how we operate to those who license, accredit, fund, use, or otherwise support our services. It’s one of those necessary evils of non-profit children’s services.Sipe’s does well with the papers, but it means that employees must compile the data, complete the forms, submit the reports, audit the files, take the minutes, write the letters, fill out the applications, file the papers, etc. Behind every child at Sipe’s is a stack of paperwork and people who manage that paperwork. However, while all that paperwork is frustrating, time consuming, and overwhelming, collectively it tells me that we at Sipe’s are on top of everything we need to be on top of. And, thanks to all that paper, we can prove it to anyone who asks.

Jumping rope offers challenges for some and fun for all.

For the Fourth of July, each camp group prepared a

special presentation for staff and parents.

One camp project was creating a pet rock, complete with a story to share.

Sipe’s recently held a raffle in conjunction with Killian’s Hardware of Hickory, raffling off a Toro Titan ZX5400 lawnmower with a retail value of $5000. Jerry Eckard, owner of Master Masonry of Hickory purchased

the winning ticket which was sold to him by Pete Whitener, treasurer of Sipe’s board of

directors. Profits from the raffle will help fund the soon-to-open Transitional Living Center

for homeless 16 to 21 year olds at Sipe’s. Pictured here, left to right are Pete Whitener,

Jerry Eckard, and Laine Cloninger, warehouse manager of Killian’s Hardware.
