These days, the Honda Malaysia office, our Melaka plant and our dealers are full of activity. We are halfway through 2012 and it is inspiring to witness our people brimming with energy, especially in bringing you the newly launched Honda City. You can read more about the stylish, premium compact sedan inside. We are also planning more initiatives for our customers this year and among them are our safety and eco driving courses that will be held more regularly throughout the year. Do keep a lookout for the announcements in our website, www.honda.com.my and feel free to join us.

Amidst such hive of activities, the tough times that gripped us not long ago seem far behind us. It is evident that through good times and bad, the Honda Way never fails to guide us in what we do. Often, when I encounter difficulties or challenges, I just need to return to the basics – that is the best advice I have gotten in my 19-year career with Honda. The Three Joys (Joy of Buying, Selling and Creating) is the very basic principle that I value most because it summarises everything you need to know about the Honda Way and it gets us the results.

Throughout my career in Honda, I have had the opportunity to work with various markets, including Europe and Asia, and as much as we are different culturally, the fundamentals do not change. The Honda Way is always our anchor. It determines how

we create good products and the way we deliver information to our customers through stringent processes and methods. Everywhere in the world, our dealers are our customers’ main contact points in experiencing the Honda Way. Thus, it is my priority during my tenure here to strengthen the overall Service Operation and Customer Relations Divisions to ensure that our dealers are well equipped to deliver joy to our customers.

As we pursue the next half of 2012 to bring you more exciting news and quality products, we hope that we can share our many joys with everyone, especially with you our dear owners. I am very encouraged by our new developments and look forward to a valuable journey for us. Enjoy your read!

Honda On Sustainability

When Honda introduced the CVCC (Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion) engine in 1972 to tackle stringent emissions control, it gave them the confidence that more innovative engines could be designed to retain the Honda’s joy of driving – one that not only achieves good fuel economy but gives excellent power. The obsessive need to balance the two has become a characteristic of all Honda engines ever since, with the VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System) and i-VTEC (Intelligent VTEC) later introduced to achieve this and with great success.

Pushing the boundaries further, “Earth Dreams Technology” is deemed to be Honda’s next generation technology for automobiles, designed to enhance driving performance and fuel efficiency even more. To pursue the joy of driving unique to Honda, the efficiency of the engine, transmission and electric-motor technology is further measured and improved.

Honda has already started implementing the gasoline engine starting with the mini-vehicle N BOX. To realise high output and fuel efficiency, the original VTEC is refined to thoroughly improve thermal efficiency and minimise friction. A wide range of engine classes from 660cc to 3.5L classes will feature the technology.

Meanwhile, a compact diesel engine is also taking root to boast the world’s lightest body, top-of-class acceleration and fuel efficiency. This is made possible through optimised engine rigidity, thermal system, combustion pressure and reduced mechanical friction. Three CVT structures are also currently being developed for mini, compact and mid-size vehicles. The overall mechanisms are thoughtfully enhanced to realise a lightweight body and achieve a 5% and 10% increase in fuel efficiency (compared to conventional CVT) for the compact and mid-size classes.

Other key features in this next generation set of “Earth Dreams Technology” includes a two-motor hybrid system with EV, Hybrid and Engine-Connected Driving Modes; a high efficiency, high output electric SH-AWD hybrid system that combines a 3.5L V6 engine for large-sized vehicles; and a compact, high efficiency electric powertrain for EVs.

Earth Dreams Technology is targeted to be ready for every category within three years and by 2020, Honda aims to reduce CO2 emissions for all products by 30%. Now that is something to get excited about as the world rushes to tackle the effects of climate change.

Stamp collecting is a pastime that many enjoy. To some, stamps become windows to a foreign world with its distinctive thumbnail-sized country landmarks, flora and fauna.

For Suraya, her love for travelling was born of her parents’ passion for travelling and collecting stamps. While her mother was a globetrotter before she became a doting full-time mother of three, her father was an ardent stamp collector and passed his philatelic possessions down to Suraya, who then continued to add to the collection with those from friends and pen pals overseas. Later on, the bubbly lass shifted her interest from stamps to postcards, and started building a massive pictorial archive of breathtaking destinations she would like to visit in the future. “Every time I receive one, I will tell myself that I will go there one day.” With that single-minded drive, her wanderlust had just begun.

Suraya’s first trip was an enlightening ‘Umrah’ pilgrimage to Mecca and Madina in the year 2005, of which she funded entirely out of her own savings. Since then, she has made it a point to travel overseas once a year and has made journeys to many other cities, including Bandung, Perth, Beijing, London, Paris, Seoul, Vietnam and more.

Her most memorable moment was when she travelled alone to Belfast, Ireland and had her first snow experience. “The other time was when I finally saw the Eiffel Tower with my very own eyes! Upon exiting the subway, the Eiffel Tower was there standing majestically in front of me and I couldn’t help but gush in adoration. Since then, every time I see it on television, I would brag that I’ve been there to my sister. It feels so good to finally be able to plot that beautiful moment in my memory,” she adds.

To Suraya, foreign cultures are constantly objects of fascination. “I think culture is the beauty of each country,” she muses. “I love sampling the local culinary delights of the

country, but I always ensure that they are Halal for consumption. I can never forget the baguettes and croissants I’ve tasted in Paris!” Besides that, the petite traveller always makes sure to buy fridge magnets as keepsakes. “You see, the postcards give me the opportunity to dream far, while the fridge magnets become symbols of how far I have gone.”

Being a Senior Assistant Director from the Ministry of Education, Suraya meets countless teachers and students nationwide and aids the future generation in their education opportunities. This responsibility allows her to travel extensively and enjoy the local sights and sounds. “I help students across the nation by planning

academic programmes and activities and love meeting people from different walks of life,” the 33-year-old adds. “My only concern is that I do not get the chance to keep in touch with my parents as often as I should, so sometimes I would bring my parents along when I leave for other states, especially when I head to my howntown, Taiping. This way, I can perform my duties and still spend precious time with my beloved mum and dad.”

As a go-getter who is ready to hop on the next flight to a foreign country, Suraya hopes to one day become an attaché to fulfil both her love for travelling and serving the government. We have no doubt that she will continue to set her sights far.

To mark the launch of the Honda Hybrid Family, which comprises of the All-New Jazz Hybrid, New Insight and CR-Z, Honda Malaysia wanted to explore new ways to interpret eco technology and connect with the younger audience. The hybrid way of thinking instinctively opened up doors to collaborate with a group of local artists. The partnership between the brand and the artists seemed fitting to best express the essence of hybrid – the merging of creative ideas, which brought exciting results.

Three local artists - Donald Abraham, 31, Orkibal, 31, and Raja Azeem Idzham, 29 – were selected to work on a spectacular art mural spanning 41.865m of the KLCC Convention Crossing (the tunnel that connects Suria KLCC to KL Convention Centre). A walk through the tunnel will bring you through rows of stunning imageries that expresses “Naturally Driven” on both sides, promoting the abundance of nature.

The artists worked stealthily at night when the tunnel is closed to the public, completing the mural over three nights. The experience, they say, was refreshing in surprising ways. “The cool part is that we each have very different styles but when we met for this project, there was an unexpected chemistry and the work just flow with ease,” says Orkibal.

Donald agrees and said that the sketches were completed very quickly when they came together. “We did our own thing and edited each other’s work here and there. It was definitely a new experience for me as I have always worked alone,” he enthuses.

“I have known Donald for a couple of years and admired his work but have never met Orkibal before this, although I knew who he was,” quips Azeem. “To collaborate with both of them is definitely very encouraging as I still consider myself a new artist.”

There is a mysterious energy in their work as individual artists. Yet, that energy somehow transforms into a youthful mural with drawings characterised by vivid colours and delightful elements of nature. Orkibal, known for his bold, vibrant characters, describes his style as trippy and a little twisted. Citing cartoons and his 3-year old son as his biggest influence, it is easy to see how his perspective of life affects his work.

“Since we are sending a positive message about the environment, I wanted the mural to capture the public’s attention. It will be great if people stopped to take some photos and share it with friends to spread the joy,” he says.

Three artists discuss their inspiration behind the enormous art mural aimed at highlighting the splendour of our environment.

trokes of nature: An art project by Honda Hybrid

Page 13: News Make heads turn with the New Honda City

13

For Donald, that energy comes mostly from his defiant skater spirit. The self-taught artist’s strong influence from skateboarding and Sabah, where he grew up, shapes his bold, eccentric characters. “To me, an expression of art chronicles a piece of history,” he says. “I do not normally have an intended message but rather focus on the creation itself. From the time I was commissioned for this project, I started paying more attention to nature. I took long walks and even bought some fishes!”

Azeem, meanwhile, draws on his experiences as an architecture graduate and childhood influences from his dad who was a museum curator. The early exposure to all forms of art got him fervently hooked and he has been sketching ever since. “I have always loved nature and animals. I tend to incorporate a lot of root-like elements into my drawings so I found it easy to relate to the environmental core of this Hybrid mural,” he says.

On the message behind the mural, he aptly sums up the collaboration effort as the core idea. “The point is that three artists are collaborating with a brand and that sends a message of working together. Preserving the environment is not the work of one man alone. This mural may have given us a valuable opportunity to express our art but hopefully it also shows that when we work together, we can achieve something better.”

Dreams are what move us forward, and make the world a better place. When Soichiro Honda founded Honda Motor, his dreams were always grand and he boldly took up the challenges before him to shape the company into what it is today.

It was the very belief in the Power of Dreams that captivated the late Mr Yoon Kum Wah, founder of Tiong Nam Motor and inspired him to establish an Authorised Honda Service Operator back in the 1980’s, as shared by his son, Mr Yoon Wai Cheong, Director and owner of Tiong Nam Motor. Today, Tiong Nam Motor stands proudly as an authorised Honda 3S centre in the new township of Setia Alam Shah Alam. As the 60th dealership to accommodate the growing demands of Honda vehicles, the presence of Tiong Nam Motor is sure to bring delight and convenience to the residents of the Shah Alam-Klang area.

As Mr Khoo Boo Hong, Director and General Manager of Tiong Nam Motor explains, the planning and setup of the 3S centre was strongly based on Honda’s Three Joys. “We envisioned the 3S centre to be a bright and spacious place that allows plenty of natural light to filter in. This allows customers to feel comfortable in the bright and spacious showroom, while providing our technicians a good environment to work in.”

iong Nam Motor brings cutting-edge values to Setia Alamioe“For us, the joy of experiencing our service is based on three big C’s – Comfort, Convenience and Communication. These are our guiding lights in giving our customers a great experience in our services,”explains Mr Khoo Boo Hong, Director and General Manager of Tiong Nam Motor.

Page 15: News Make heads turn with the New Honda City

15

Mr Khoo is also delighted to point out that Tiong Nam Motor features an Electronically Controlled Car Tracking System, a first-of-its-kind technology at service centres that provides customers with up-to-date information of their cars during service. Combined with its informative Queue System and a large unobstructed view of the working bay, waiting customers can be rest assured that their cars are in good hands as they rest comfortably at the customer lounge.

The people of Tiong Nam Motor firmly believe in fulfilling the company’s three important principles to achieve customer satisfaction. “For us, the joy of experiencing our service is based on three big C’s – Comfort, Convenience and Communication. These are our guiding lights in giving our customers a great experience in our services and the main reason that we have implemented the aforementioned technologies,” explains Mr Khoo.

Besides that, Tiong Nam Motor also boasts a comprehensive range of customer service measures to make their visit to the dealer centre a pleasant one. For customers who

would like to send their car for services after business hours, the Car Drop Off service allows them to hand over their keys with care and leave their car under the watchful eyes of their 24-hour security. Other services such as One Stop Shop with wheel alignment and tyre service and scheduled Shuttle service around town are also created with customer convenience in mind. As the icing on the cake, customers stand to receive a free fast food lunch meal when they set a service appointment with the service centre.

It is clearly evident that Tiong Nam Motor has set out to create the best sales and after-sales experience under one roof. “We would like Honda owners to visit us and experience our technology and facilities that are unique in the local automobile industry,” enthuses Mr Khoo. Service Manager Mr Tor Wai Beng also ensures customers that with its highly-trained technical team especially in hybrid technology, and the company’s long-held forte in car service and maintenance, the dealership is optimistic that they will be able to exceed customer expectations.

Car Care

Did you know that tyre wear as a result of improper maintenance and driving habits can shorten a tyre’s lifespan and be quite hazardous in an emergency? To get the most out of your tyres’ performance, we recommend following this quick and simple inspection to identify common wear characteristics.

First, check your tyres for damage by looking out for any cuts, cracks or bulges and remove any stones or foreign objects that are lodged in the grooves. Uneven tyre wear happens quite often , especially on bad roads, and if not taken care of, could lead to slow punctures or blowouts.

You will know your tyres need replacement when the tread wear indicator is exposed. To check how far your tyre is worn, use a 20 sen coin and put it in the treads over the surface. If you cannot see the word “sen”, the tyre is okay. If you can, you should replace the tyre immediately.

While driving, feel for wobbling or vibrations at certain speeds caused by unbalanced rims. This typically leads to premature tyre wear or causes driver fatigue. If you feel your car start to vibrate, get your service centre to check the wheels on a balancing machine.

You can also check tyre pressures weekly and ensure that you are inflating the tyres with the correct air pressure as recommended in your vehicle handbook. The right amount of air pressure will not only give you better fuel mileage but also enhances vehicle handling. Note that new tyres tend to expand during the initial period, decreasing its inner pressure. Frequent checking will help you keep your tyres properly inflated.

Finally, do bear in mind that wheel alignment and balancing should be done whenever a tyre

show signs of irregular or excessive wear, or at every 10,000 kms travelled. You will know

that your car is out of alignment when the car pulls away from a straight line and into another lane.

Follow these simple inspection tips to help you maintain your car tyres in good condition and ensure safety on the road.

glimpse of Honda’s green automotive technology through the years

Since 1948, Honda has strived to create new values consistently to be relevant to the society it calls home. When traffic pollution first gripped headlines worldwide in the 1960’s, Honda was one of the pioneering companies to advocate green initiatives for cleaner air and a cleaner future. Let’s take a look at Honda’s evolving automotive technology from the year 1972.

Honda Global

Honda revealed an electrifying range of study models, motorcycles, power products and many more at the internationally-acclaimed Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 held from the 13th to 15th of January this year. True to its philosophy, “Joy of Creating”, Honda’s exhibits pushed the envelope for Japanese design and technology to present an exciting line up themed on entertainment, accessories and motor sports appeal.

Top on the list was the quirky Flash Box study model, a clubber’s mobile cave built on the new N Box Custom minicar. Designed with a clubbing concept, the car features a delightful DJ Booth in its trendy metallic black body, reflective decals and embedded LEDs letting out a party vibe. The inside is equipped with quality speakers and illuminated with generous doses of funky lights, including shining pink LED lights! The Freed Wa, another study model, offered a different perspective from the modern Flash Box. Reaching to the Japanese brand’s traditional roots, this model was designed based on the Freed Hybrid compact minivan. Here, modern machinery is given a sentimental touch, by pairing it with the ancient Japanese art of lacquering on the exterior. Whimsical flowers representing the four-seasons adorned the interior.

More interesting exhibits were showcased at the event; particularly the Honda Freed Spike Transporter built by Honda Access and Honda Racing to haul off-road motorcycles. Enthusiasts were also pleasantly surprised by a reinterpretation of the much-loved 2-seater Honda BEAT

Auto Salon using genuine BEAT accessories and special aerodynamic parts.

Honda showcased a range of motorcycles such as NC700S, NC700X, INTEGRA (New Midsize Series), CB1100, VT1300CS and many others at the event. In addition, Honda Racing also displayed the RC212V motorcycle, the MoToGP championship winner and the Honda HSV-010 GT race car from Japan’s Super GT series.

The Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 was indeed a wonderful outing for auto fans and visitors, especially with the variety of catchy innovations presented by Honda to convey the joy of mobility and appeal of motor sports, affirming the car brand’s dedication to their philosophy, the “Joy of Creating”.

Come September 2012, the skies of Bintulu will be filled with a plethora of beautiful kites on the day of the Borneo International Kite Festival.

As the graceful Malaysian ‘Wau’ kites take to the skies amongst sleek stunt kites, families can also participate in the day’s events, ranging from drawing and colouring competitions, cultural night performances to a trade fair displaying Sarawak’s unique handicrafts. Meanwhile, on the 26th, 27th and 29th of September, the 1st Asia Pacific Sport Kite (dual-line) Championship is set to wow enthusiasts as kite experts compete for prized title. Don’t forget to bring some beautiful kites home as souvenir.
